Welcome to the MAC!

We are so grateful that you are here to support our college productions, and to help usher in the next generation of talent. The McAninch Arts Center strives to be the cultural epicenter of DuPage County. We host a variety of world-class touring shows and more importantly, more than 1,000 students perform on our stages, celebrating their talents and learning in theater, music, dance and visual arts. We strive to give our students experience in a professional working environment and to provide access to the arts through outreach programs, performance opportunities, discounted tickets and master classes. Please visit the Cleve Carney Art Gallery while you’re here. Drop in on our free Music Fridays @ Noon Series. Come to one of our College Theater pre- or post-show discussions. Stay connected to us by joining us on Facebook (AtTheMac) or by joining our e-newsletter for news about all the events at the MAC (www.AtTheMAC.org). And consider coming back to audition for a show, join one of our music ensembles, take a dance class or take private lessons. Now, enjoy the show!

Grease is sometimes seen as a “good girl gone bad” love story, but I think that’s missing the central point of the piece. On the surface, it’s the story of “cool” high schools kids in the ’50s, who amuse the audience with defiant pranks and first love woes. More deeply, it deals with the struggle of growing up.

Sandy and Rizzo aren’t so different; both are scared to death, but it takes being shaken up by the other to really confront and ‘see’ themselves. Kenickie isn’t just a ‘tough guy.’ He cares about someone deeply, and when an event happens that confuses him, he is hurt and hides behind his anger. Danny is a boy torn between maintaining his ‘leader’ status and showing his true feelings.

Having, developing and growing relationships often mean meeting halfway. ALL of the characters in Grease come to understand this. It’s at times humorous or endearing. Sometimes it pulls at our hearts to watch these teenagers gather all of their courage to step away from whatever ‘mold’ they’ve created for themselves (or that others have created for them), and stand up in front of peers and themselves AS the person they choose to be.

In addition to this piece being fun and full of youthful energy, this group “goes together,” to quote the iconic song, because they need and support one another through joy and pain. The tough exteriors belie the feelings these people are experiencing, until they’re confident enough to “own” them.

We hope you have as much fun as we have had, working on Grease. The Burger Palace Boys and the Pink Ladies are about to take over this theatre, as they’re taking over Rydell High; they’ll be joining you in the audience often, so be ready!

Thanks for joining us. “A wop-baba-lu-bop!”~Connie Canaday Howard

The Friends of the MAC is a family of people who have decided that a world-class performing and visual arts center should reside in their community. Ticket sales only provide 42 percent of our $3 million operating budget. It is through the support of College of DuPage and through the generous gifts from patrons and local businesses that we can keep art in our gallery and on our stages.

Your gift to the MAC • Brings nationally and internationally renowned artists to our community • Supports our SchoolStage program that annually offers affordable arts experiences to thousands of school children • Provides students and community members the opportunity to interact with artists • Enhances the quality of life in our community

Without the generous support of the Friends of the MAC we would not be the cultural hub of DuPage County. We gratefully thank our friends and we invite others to join them.

For complete details, visit the MAC Ticket Offi ce or call the MAC at (630) 942-2263 or the College of DuPage Foundation at (630) 942-2466.
