Becoming.More.ActiveBeing more active is one way in which you can improve your lifestyle . Our bodies are designed to move and physical activity should form part of our daily routine . This can be in many forms, (some of which will be illustrated in this guide) but it also includes everyday tasks such as walking, housework and climbing stairs .
You don’t have to be ‘sporty’ either, the benefits of being more active can be gained from all types of physical activity not just ‘formal exercise’

n lose weight n control blood sugars

What.activities.are.safe.and.effective?For general public health benefit, the most appropriate activities are those of moderate intensity . Moderate intensity activity stimulates the body’s cardio respiratory, musculoskeletal and metabolic systems and over time causes them to adapt and become more efficient . In other words, the body gets fitter . The concept of ‘moderate intensity activity’ may not be widely understood . A person who is doing moderate intensity activity will usually experience:
n an increase in breathing rate
n an increase in heart rate, to the level where the pulse can be felt
n a feeling of increased warmth, possibly accompanied by sweating on hot or humid days .
Also, a bout of moderate intensity activity can be continued for many minutes, and does not cause exhaustion or extreme fatigue when continued for an extended period .
How.much.activity.should.I.do?The aim is to do 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity on five or more days of the week . This can be broken into smaller chunks of 10 minutes and accumulated throughout the day .
Simple.tips.to.help.you.become.more.activen Leave the remote control on top of the television
n Take the stairs instead of the escalator / lift
n Park your car as far away and walk that little bit further

n Do some mobility exercises first thing in the morning
n Go for a walk during your lunch break
n If you have milk or newspapers delivered, cancel the delivery and walk to the shop .
n Get a dog or volunteer to walk a neighbour’s dog .
Key.points.to.remembern Physical activity improves health throughout the life course
– from childhood through to older age .
n For general health benefit, adults should achieve a total of at least 30 minutes a day of at least moderate intensity physical activity on 5 or more days of the week .
n The recommended levels of activity can be achieved either by doing all the daily activity in one session, or through several shorter bouts of activity of 10 minutes or more .
n The activity can be lifestyle activity, structured exercise or sport, or a combination of these .

WalkingIf you are unsure of what type of exercise to do, walking is an ideal place to start . It can be done by anyone no matter what fitness level, you can do it anywhere and it doesn’t cost anything .
Any walking is better than none at all but ideally walking should be brisk, so that you are slightly out of breath and you can feel your heart beating a little faster . If you are very unfit or haven’t done any exercise for some time it is better to start slowly and build up to walking faster as your fitness improves .
Bay Walks is a shceme that provides led walks by trained walk leaders . For further details or to get a list of the led walks, contact Mel Border at Bay Walks on 01803 606035

Health.&.FitnessJoining a gym is a great way to keep fit and get in shape . Most modern gyms have all the necessary equipment for you to achieve all your health and fitness goals and they cater for all types of people; not just ‘sporty types’
Gyms can be very expensive, however, and a large proportion of those who join a gym do not stay members for more than a couple of months or do not visit the gym as often as they would like . This may be for a number of reasons such as lack of time, lack of motivation, didn’t like the atmosphere or perhaps for financial reasons .
It is very important to make sure you think about these factors before you decide to join a gym . Shop around and don’t be afraid to ask questions .
n Can you afford it?
n Do you get value for money (both in terms of equipment and customer service)?
n Will you enjoy it?
n Can you motivate yourself or should you go with a friend?
For further advice visit www .fia .org .uk
Before.joining.a.gym.or.health.club.we..recommend.that.you-
n Visit the gym at the times that you wish to use it .

Group.FitnessMany people find it difficult to motivate themselves to exercise on their own or find that going to a gym to exercise is not for them . If this sounds like you then you may prefer the social aspect of exercising in a group . There are many types of exercise class out there and it is worth going to view a class before you decide to take part, if possible speak to the exercise instructor to find out if the class would be suitable for you .
Types.of.classes.available.include:
Aerobics Movement routines designed to get your heart rate up so that your cardiovascular fitness levels improve .
Step.aerobics As above but the routines are designed around stepping up onto a platform and down again . This tends to be high impact .
27
Body.conditioning A combination of aerobics and weight training to improve cardiovascular fitness and body tone .
Circuit.training Cardiovascular and strength exercises performed for a set time before moving to the next exercise as a circuit .
Indoor.cycling Often called spinning, this is staged to music on exercise bikes and often includes body conditioning exercises on the bike .
Fifty.plus These tend to be combinations of the above types of class but at a more gentle intensity . If you are looking for a gentle class but are not over 50 it may be worth speaking to the instructor as you may be able to take part .
Most of the above classes will be found at your local Leisure Centre or Health Club, although you may also
find exercise classes in the ‘what’s on’ guide in the local paper or at your local community centre/hall .

Mind.and.BodyThere are a number of exercise techniques that work the mind as well as the body . The following list represents just a few . The aim of these exercises is to improve posture, regulate breathing, reduce aches and stiffness, improve flexibility and make the body more supple . At the same time, you’ll be better able to focus mentally, think deeply and stay calm .
Alexander.TechniqueAlexander teachers usually work one-to-one to correct balance in every muscle of the body . Alexander improves stamina and flexibility, alleviates joint and muscle problems and helps stress-related conditions . Also good for self-development, as it teaches self-awareness and self-reliance, and boosts spontaneity and creativity . www .stat .org .uk
PilatesJoseph Pilates, born in Germany in 1880 suffered from asthma and rickets but was determined to improve his physical health . He developed a system of exercise that he called ‘Controlology’ . He was interned in England during World War I
0
and used this form of exercise to improve the health and morale of fellow prisoners . Pilates has a full range of exercises that will help you to develop efficient movement, flexibility, strength, co-ordination, balance and endurance . It is not just an exercise routine – it is an awareness of posture and movement that you can build into everyday life .

Tai.ChiTai Chi is a dynamic or ‘hard’ form of Qigong (a Chinese system of philosophy and healthcare that combines physical movements, breathing techniques and meditation), and comprises a series of postures linked by slow, graceful movements and accompanied by breathing techniques that focus concentration . It is performed in a sequence designed to restore and enhance the flow of chi, or ‘vital energy’, exercising mind, body and spirit to bring health and well-being .

YogaThere are several forms of yoga but the one most commonly found in Western countries is hatha yoga, which means ‘balance of mind and body’ . Hatha yoga is mainly concerned with physical postures, designed to stretch and strengthen muscles and stimulate nerve centres and internal organs, and breathing

techniques that optimise the flow of prana, or ‘life energy’ which flows along invisible channels called nadis . Yoga exercises are said to revitalise the seven chakras (energy centres) that rise in a line from the solar plexus to the crown of the head .

SwimmingSwimming is a great way to tone up and trim down, because to swim you need to move your body against the resistance of the water . It involves most of the major muscle groups, giving your body a great work out . Because you can swim at your own pace, slowly if you wish, you can keep swimming for much longer than if you were going for the burn on a bike, for example . Maintaining your staying power is a vital goal in fat-burning exercise .
The other big advantage of swimming is that water supports your weight and takes the stress off your joints, so you can put your body through a good workout without your knees, hips or spine paying the price . Research shows that exercising in waist-deep water reduces the pressure on joints by 50 per cent, while exercising in chest-deep water reduces it by as much as 75 per cent .
However, although swimming is great if you have joint problems such as arthritis, it won’t build up much protection against osteoporosis because it’s not a weight-bearing exercise .
Swimming is a wonderful exercise in pregnancy .
The weight-supporting effect of
water means it’s especially good in the late stages when you’re struggling to get about .

Community.Sports.Development.in.Torbay
Torbay.Sports.Partnership..@.Paignton.Community.and.Sports.CollegeThe Torbay Sports Partnership took over the organisation and implementation of the Sports Development Programme from Torbay Council in 2005 . Since then the Partnership has employed a Community Sports Co-ordinator whose job is to develop opportunities for everyone throughout Torbay to participate in sport and physical activity . This remit includes developing the links between schools and clubs and promoting sport and physical activity opportunities throughout the Bay .
The Community Sports Co-ordinator works closely with other agencies including the Youth Sport Trust, Sports Coach UK, Sport England, National Governing Bodies of Sport, Community Sports Coaches, local sports clubs, youth centres and other organisations who have an interest in sport .
These partnerships have helped in the development of already existing sports programmes and initiatives including the Devon Youth Games, the Torbay Sports Personality of the Year Awards, the Torbay Youth Triathlon, and the Torbay Coach Education Programme . The Community Sports Co-ordinator is constantly working on the development and implementation of other programmes and initiatives in order to improve the sporting life of everyone throughout Torbay .
105
Active.Devon.Sports.PartnershipThe Active Devon Sports Partnership was established in 2000 to deliver community sports development initiatives throughout Devon (including Plymouth and Torbay) .
They are one of 45 similar Partnerships around the country and are the biggest in the South West, both geographically and in terms of the numbers of partners they have .
The main activities are aimed at 10-16 year olds and range from introductory coaching activities and local club development to sub-county development squad programmes for more talented youngsters .
Their aim is to help young people improve their skills and abilities and get more involved in organised sport . The nine ‘target’ sports on which they focus are: basketball, tennis, girls’ football, cricket, rugby, netball, hockey, athletics and swimming .
However, their programmes are not exclusively confined to these focus sports; club and coach development programmes are available to the whole sporting community in Devon and people and clubs from sports as diverse as surfing, skateboarding and horse riding have benefited from the activities organised . They have also been involved with successful projects with other partners, such as out of school hours coaching in schools, coaching for the looked after children and transport provision through the Countryside Agency .
The Active Devon Sports Partnership is looking forward to exciting times ahead . In line with National and Regional Plans for sport they fully support and integrate with a County Partnership that has an even wider remit for increasing participation in physical activity and sport in Devon .
10
Members of the Active Devon Sports Partnership team are employed throughout the county and each have a remit for a particular sport or area of work . To contact one of the Sports Specific Officers or any member of the Partnership team please visit their website www .activedevon .org .
Torbay.Coach.Education.Programme.In the Coach Education Programme you will find a variety of courses that will provide you with the opportunity to learn and equip yourself with new skills .
We offer a wide range of courses for people with all levels of experience and the objective of the Coach Education Programme is to raise the standard of sports coaching, together with acknowledging and supporting the role of the sports coach in the local area .
The Programme includes National Governing Body Awards for specific courses and generic courses and workshops covering areas such as club development, coach development and child protection which are important when applying for Clubmark schemes .
Further information can be found in the Torbay Coach Education Programme or by contacting Kirsty Parker, the Community Sports Co-ordinator on 01803 403739 . Alternatively you can access the programme of courses on the Torbay Sport Partnership website; www .torbaysport .com .
Torbay.Sports.Personality.of.the.Year.Awards.Since 1999 Torbay Council has annually hosted the Sports Personality of the Year Awards and is now hosted by the Torbay
107
Sports Partnership through their Community Sports Co-ordinator .
The aim of the event is to recognise the dedication and achievements of the sporting community throughout Torbay . The Awards recognise sportsmen, sportswomen, junior sportsmen and sportswomen, coaches, volunteers and disabled sportspeople . This allows a number of varying people and organisations to be recognised for the commitment to sport in Torbay .
The Sports Personality of the Year Awards will run every year through the Torbay Sports Partnership and Nomination Forms will be available from November each year . To access a Nomination Form please call Kirsty Parker, the Community Sports Co-ordinator on 01803 403739 or visit www .torbaysport .com .
Devon.Youth.Games.The Devon Youth Games have existed since 1999 and each year attract over 1500 young sportsmen and women from across the County taking part in ten different sports . The Games are held in a different Authority each year and encourage young people to take part in physical activity .
Bringing together over a thousand young people from eight local authorities in the county, the Devon Youth Games promote community youth sport and create multiple new sport development opportunities .
If you would like to be involved in the Games as either a team manager or a participant please contact Kirsty Parker, the Community Sports Co-ordinator on 01803 403739 .
