JUST THE TONICOne of the most talked-about new bar kitchens to open in Newcastle in a while is Bealim House, home to an 8ft tall copper gin still - the focal point of the bar - which distils the spirit at the heart of the sizeable bar menu.

This vintage New York kitchen-style redevelopment of the former Bealim Print Works, which was latterly Fluid Bar, covers two quirky floors featuring antique leather seating, vintage tiles, varnished brick walls, original printing memorabilia and an open-plan kitchen. The menu includes tapas and snacks, sharing platters and sliders, and bar classics such as club sandwiches, burgers, and steak and chips.

The gin selection includes hibiscus gin produced in the 400-litre still, wine, cocktails, and a beer table complete with self-pouring pumps. Hic! Bealim House, Gallowgate, bealimhouse.co.uk

Matthew Varty, lead singer with local band Lisbon, offers up some top musical tips to keep those summer vibes burning

Fool's Gold – Surprise HotelA tropical fiesta, oozing with zesty guitar licks and bursting with pure joy. This exotic tune is an exploration into African music and rhythm and a treat rain or shine.

Miami Horror feat. Alan Palomo – Holidays A feel-good anthem, with funky guitars sitting on a really big electronic bass line, it never fails to get people on their feet.

Astrud Gilberto & Stan Getz – The Girl From IpanemaThis song sounds best in the height of summer, astoundingly soothing and upbeat and perfect for the beach.

Snakehips – Forever Snakehips are fresh, intelligent, and outrageously infectious. Known for their throwback R&B/hip hop feel-good music. Forever sounds like a pool party: cool and contagious. Mac DeMarco – Salad DaysThis song kind of says “it's not okay but that's okay” – a listen to this in the sunshine might even brush your own troubles aside.wearelisbon.com

The tour is all about your life as recorded through your diaries, how do you keep your diary? I’m very old fashioned. I do a lot of work on the computer so I keep my diary longhand. It’s good as a writer to give yourself a work out for 20 minutes every day to record what happened to you the day before.

Do you prefer writing fiction or comedy?A bit of both. At school I loved

using my imagination to write a story. I used to love sketches on Python; when it really worked it was just superb, getting comedy right is very satisfying.

How about with acting?Again, a bit of both. It would be difficult for me to play a character that didn’t have a dimension of humour somewhere.

What’s the best thing about travelling?Days are always dazzlingly

different, you really feel excitement and all the potential that the world has to offer.

What is your favourite trip?A journey around the Pacific, but particularly from the tip of South America right up to Alaska; it was a fantastic ride.

What’s on your iPod while you’re traveling?Bruce Springsteen, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, and there’s always a bit of Johnny Cash too.

HERE’S JOHNNYJohn Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, one-time punk hero and scourge of the establishment, has gone a bit soft in his old age, writing a heartfelt new autobiography, shedding tears on the telly, and even becoming something of a national treasure. What’s going on? Try this...

Now aged 59, the former Johnny Rotten - lead singer of the Sex Pistols 1975-78 and writer of the punk anthem Anarchy in the UK - is almost cuddly these days. He even cried during an interview with Channel 4’s Jon Snow as he recalled childhood meningitis and a resultant four-year memory loss. “The pain you go through, not remembering your own parents. It took a lot out of me to go back into my childhood and face that pain. It breaks my heart,” he said. *Sob.

Lydon’s a prolific songwriter, he’s written two autobiographies, and he’s an accomplished artist (check out PiL album covers for starters).

Never afraid to speak his mind, in 1978 he said on Radio 1: “I’d like to kill Jimmy Savile; I bet he’s into all kinds of seediness that we all know about, but aren’t allowed to talk about. I know some rumours.” Sadly, nobody listened.

Lydon is married to Nora Forster, whose daughter, Ari Up, who died in 2010, was

AHEAD OF HIS TOON GIG WITH PUBLIC IMAGE LTD (PIL), PUNK FIREBRAND JOHN LYDON GIVES US A PIECE OF HIS MIND

Riverside, September 20, £26.50, riversidenewcastle.co.uk

lead singer in the pioneering post-punk band The Slits. Of Forster, his partner for nearly 40 years, he says: “When we met, we disliked each other so much we were drawn together like magnets. She was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. She was also well educated, funny and dressed magnificently. I have never been unfaithful, though I had plenty of opportunity. We’d both played the field before and found it very wanting.”

Lydon and Forster’s London home burned down in 2011 in a fire caused by, wait for it, their tumble dryer, Rock ‘n’ roll!

Lydon was named Johnny Rotten because of his rotten teeth, which he has now had fixed. “I spent $22,000 on them,” he said in 2008. “All those rotten teeth were seriously beginning to corrupt my system. And my gums were receding and I was starting to look seriously weird.”

In 2014 Lydon was cast as King Herod in a US production of Jesus Christ Superstar alongside Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, Brandon Boyd of rock band Incubus, and JC Chasez of boyband NSync (no word of a lie). Sadly, it was axed before it made it to the stage.

Brought up a Catholic, Lydon has said: “Where is God? I see no evidence. God is probably Barry Manilow.”

SURVIVALGUIDE

Everyone’s going to tell you where to go and what to do when you first land in Toon, and most of them will be wrong. Here’s a survival guide you can trust

NIGHTS OUTNewcastle’s Quayside is a must, with the uber-cool Livello at Vermont Hotel, microbrewery smokehouse Hop and Cleaver, trendy Bridge Tavern and Aveika.

For an eclectic mix of music (and people!) head to the CUT for Dragnet every Saturday night, or check out Uplifting Groove at World Headquarters.

If it’s a taste of the Geordie Shore life you’re looking for, head for the Diamond Strip on Collingwood Street where you’ll find Revolution, Madame Koo, Floritas, Perdu and Bijoux.

SUNDAY SCRANWhether you’re looking for lunch with mam and dad when they drop you off or a little home comfort, pay a visit to our favourite Sunday haunts. We love a trip to The Earl of Pitt Street for a top-notch Sunday roast and a good pint of beer. The Broad Chare’s feasts have to be tasted to be believed, while for those who prefer a four-course brunch feast that’s big enough to last a week, Hotel Du Vin and Malmaison are local favourites.

HANGOVER CURESFor a proper Full English head to Blake’s on Grey Street - they do a bigger version for those particularly under the weather. If you find yourself looking for sustenance a little later in the day, Zapatista’s takeaway burritos are a perfect hangover cure, or grab a burger at Burger Stop or Fat Hippo Underground.

BLOW YOUR LOANSpend a night in one of the Newcastle’s most exclusive hotels - Vermont Aparthotel on the Quayside - which features two penthouses, a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce and the use of a personal chef.

If you’re the betting type, try Asper’s Casino in The Gate or Grosvenor Casino on St James’ Blvd; you might lose everything on one hand, but you’ll have fun doing it.

A spending spree in Toon will brighten your look. Pop into Cruise - home of Dolce & Gobbana, Gucci, Vivienne Westwood and more, Meanwhile, Rox at Monument Mall, and the new Thomas Sabo store at intu Eldon Square are sources of very upmarket sparkly things. Just make sure you have enough left in your wallet for a 51-week supply of beans on toast.

What’s going to make your Freshers’ week the best?Freshtival on Sept 19 – we have a day-long party with The Pigeon Detectives, Hoosiers and Shift K3y headlining in the evening, it’s going to be amazing.

What makes your SU the best? It’s really friendly – there are thousands of enthusiastic volunteers who want to do the best for students- from putting on great student-led events to providing support and advice, and just being open; the Union really cares about the students.

What’s the best night in your SU? St Paddy’s day - it’s one of our biggest events and it’s great fun. There’s live music and face-painting and everyone has a great time.

Who’s you most famous alum?I’d go for Jonathan Ive. It’s incredible that the guy who designed the iPod came to our Uni! Also, Gordon Sumner (aka Sting) is a pretty cool addition to the ‘family’.

What’s the best thing about being a student in Newcastle? That everything is so student friendly. From the shops to the cafes and everything else, it’s all aimed at students so it’s really easy to feel at home here. mynsu.co.uk

What’s going to make your Freshers’ week the best?We have a million and one things on this year. Our week has a ‘Global Adventure’ theme and we have great artists on including Sigala, and exciting venues from the new Bierkeller to Digital. There’s paintballing, quad biking and Go Ape, plus free food planned too. What makes your SU the best? The atmosphere. All of the staff and students create a fun, friendly and positive atmosphere which makes it a great place to be every day.

What’s the best night in your SU? The Freshers nights are definitely the best of the year but we also have great events planned every Saturday night. Who’s you most famous alum?Martin Luther King received an honorary doctorate of Civil Law in 1967, but the most famous recent alumni of Newcastle would probably be Rowan Atkinson. What’s the best thing about being a student in Newcastle? The local people. You can’t help but love the friendliness and banter of the Geordies.nusu.co.uk
