THE DONATION CHALLENGE People love their libraries. So much so, they want to give you their old books with the hope that they will make their way onto your shelves or be sold in a library book sale. The reality is donations cost you precious time to manage, rarely are accepted into the collection, and the return on book sales is often less than you would like - especially after factoring in the space, time and energy they require. THE DONATION CHALLENGEPeople love their libraries. So much so, they want to give you their old books with the hope that they will make their way onto your shelves or be sold in a library book sale. Throwing away books feels wrong and they want a convenient outlet for doing the right thing.

The reality is donations cost you precious time to manage, rarely are accepted into the collection, and the return on book sales is often less than you would like - especially after factoring in the space, time and energy they require.

THERE’S A BETTER WAY — THE DROP BOX PROGRAM FROM BETTER WORLD BOOKS.

NO CHARGE, NO HASSLEThe BWB Drop Box Program is completely free to your library. BWB places the box, monitors it, and empties it. There is nothing library staff needs to do, except direct patrons to the Drop Boxes if they have materials to donate.

MEETING COMMUNITY AND LIBRARY NEEDS BWB’s free Drop Box Program makes it easy for your community to donate books and for the library to benefit at the same time. We can be your sole donation program, or work with existing Friends or Bookstore outlets.

• Drop Boxes take the labor out of donations. The Drop Box program is a win-win solution to the donation challenge. The community feels good about supporting the library in a way that does not create more work for library staff. An attractive, clearly marked box (approximately 4 x 4 square feet in size) is placed in each participating library’s parking lot. Each box is equipped with a fill sensor that automatically notifies BWB when the box is almost full. Staff or even library customers also can notify BWB if a box needs to be emptied via text messaging, email or phone.

• Donations generate a new revenue stream. BWB collects donations from your Drop Boxes and sells them across 54 online and offline marketplaces. Your library receives a percentage of every sale. Items not sold are donated to various literacy organizations or recycled. Nothing is thrown away. Easy-to-access reports show how your Drop Boxes are benefitting your library, literacy, and the environment.

• Free Book Insurance: Boxes are prominently labeled “No Library Returns,” but if you notify BWB that a library book inadvertently was put in the Drop Box, BWB will reimburse you for the cost of the book - no questions asked.

“Managing a donation program

is a tremendous amount of

work. With Better World Books,

we just direct people to the Drop

Boxes and explain the benefits

of reusing/recycling books.”
