Forest City funeral director Robert Lesjack left Saturday, Jan. 3, for five weeks in India and Ne- pal. The five-member team will represent Rotary District 7410. Two power failures hit our area on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 27 and 28, during a 12 to 18 inch snowfall. Deaths: Willis H. Emme was sworn in as Mayor of Forest City Borough Monday night to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Dr. A.B. Cimochowski. William Peterlin was reelect- ed president of Vandling Boro Council at its reorganization meeting on Tuesday evening January 3rd. Valentine Germ was elected vice president replacing Michael O’Pecko. A warm thank you, due the hundreds of friends of the Susquehanna County Library who generously supported the 1967 Annual Drive, was expressed by Mrs. Marion Baker, librarian. She reported that the final total for the drive was $4,181.30 — just over two-thirds of the $6,000 goal. The Forest City Planning Com- mission elected Richard Pente- cost as chairman at its reorga- nization meeting held January 4th. Fred Kigerl was elected vice chairman with Clara T. Gantar being elected secretary-treasurer. Daniel Takach, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Takach, has enlisted in the army and is presently at Fort Benning, Ga. He was formerly employed by the Big Chief Mar- ket. 60 YEARS AGO January 9, 1958 Vandling Borough Council reorganizes with Martin Kelly as chairman; Stanley Sukenick as secretary and Daniel Burns as treasurer. Fletch- er, Herrick Center; Lois Klevans, former clothier. 100 YEARS AGO January 5,1918 Darts Corner, says our Union Dale correspondent, holds record for the lowest temperature during the recent cold spell that visited this area. The thermometer regis- tered thirty below zero. The D&H Railroad is to take several passenger trains from schedule in line with a govern- ment order to conserve fuel and assist in greater movement of freight and coal trains. Susquehanna defeated the lo- cal high school basketball team 42-29 on the winner’s court. O.H. Yale of Union Dale, area Ford dealer, is busy in Scran- ton preparing his exhibit for the Scranton Auto Show. 110 YEARS AGO January 9,1908 The State Board of Health has given its approval for proposed sewer system in Forest City. On Thursday, Dec. 25, Miss Agnes Jones of Herrick Center and Samuel Entrot of Union Dale were united in marriage at the Centenary Methodist Church in Binghamton. The members of the Cliffs Shaft and No. 2 Colliery First Aid teams held their annual banquet at Hotel Muchiꜩ, with over 300 aending the dinner and smoker. 120 YEARS AG January 7,1898 The Union Dale schools have reopened after a week’s vacation due to the low temperatures. I remember that a farmer lady named Ona rented row boats on Dunns Pond. We would pack lunch and some sodas and would go for a day of bullhead fishing. I can remember that Kameens Hardware had bamboo poles outside in a rack for all to see and buy. Uncle Dick liked to fish with a bamboo pole with line and a bobber. He fished with 3 poles. I liked a casting rod and bobber. Great fun to catch the bull- heads and you had to be care- ful that they did not horn you when you took them off of the hook. We would take them home and clean and skin them for dinner. N E P A surf and turf for dinner, Kielbasa and bull- heads, floured and fried in ba- con grease. YUMM My father used to take his deer ribs and but them in a burlap bag with rocks for weight and throw them in the pond. That is where we bull- head fished. Lots of fish. He always said that the best time for bullhead fishing was when the leaves on the apple trees were as big as mouse ears was the best time?? I really miss him. I loved to bullhead fish and my Uncle Dick Atkinson would take Boopie and me to Dunn’s Pond to fish. I remember that a farmer lady named Ona rented row boats on Dunns Pond.

We would pack lunch and some sodas and would go for a day of bullhead fishing. I can remember that Kameens Hardware had bamboo poles outside in a rack for all to see and buy. Uncle Dick liked to fish with a bamboo pole with line and a bobber.

He fished with 3 poles. I liked a casting rod and bobber.

Great fun to catch the bull-heads and you had to be care-ful that they did not horn you when you took them off of the hook. We would take them home and clean and skin them for dinner.

My father used to take his deer ribs and but them in a burlap bag with rocks for weight and throw them in the pond. That is where we bull-head fished.

Lots of fish. He always said that the best time for bullhead fishing was when the leaves on the apple trees were as big as mouse ears was the best time??

I really miss him.

The following short stories are of life as a young boy in the Forest City Area and are written by Robert Cole, Bordentown, NJ. His parents were Alfred and Jessie At-kinson Cole. He was born in 1940 in his grandparent’s house on Railroad Street. His grandparents were Richard and Jessie Atkinson.
