4. RESEARCH GROUPS
Researching is one of the main goals of the Department. In our Department, we consider that research promotion is the only way to guarantee teaching quality, improvement in the different academic fields and knowledge transfer to other sectors of society. The Department is composed of a series of different Research Groups that develop their activities in the facilities that are evaluable. The Research Groups are the only mechanism that the Department has in order to organize and manage researching activities.
GI-1612. Lignocellulosic Material Usage Contact E-mail: [email protected] This Group focuses on the use and recovery of lignocellulosic materials and residues obtained from forestry and industrial operations. The main studies focus on:
- forestry industry residues, such as eucalyptus and pine bark - food industry residues, such as the chesnut shell - forestry residues, such as pine leaves and Acacia dealbata wood, leaves and bark.
Multiple objectives are pursued with these studies. They are also highly interesting for industrial plants, increasing their cooperation. Some of the objectives include residue elimination, sustainable process innovation in order to obtain added value products and development of clean technologies.

5.5. SCI Number and H index One of the different criteria that are used to define the scientific activity influence consists on the “impact index” calculation (SCI), which is obtained as the addition of the impact of publications. The Departament has kept a constant increase in this index during the decade, in such way that its CSI in 2010 is almost three times bigger than the one obtained in 2000. This is due to the increasing number of published articles and their average impact index, which in 2012 was of 3,002.
In September of 2005 Professor Jorge E. Hirsch from University of California published a work where he proposes a new and simple index to evaluate the investigation impact, the h factor (h-index). The h factor is “the number of articles that that author has with as many or more quotations than his h factor”. Categorize the scientífic activity with h factor presents several advantages: (i) it is an average spread along the years; (ii) it is a number that only can increase or remain blocked; (iii) it permits extrapolate the scientific performance in medium term. The role of Chemical Engineering in Spain is remarkable, being the USC one of the institutions which contribues in an important way to the recognition of Chemical Engineering.
