We’re expanding our stable of stores in 2014. Exciting new store announcements, restaurants and remodeling arecoming soon right here at Saddle Creek.

For over 35 years, Trezevant has provided retirement living at its best, offering services and amenities such as fine and casual dining, weekly housekeeping and linen service and 24/7 on-site maintenance and security. There is always something interesting and enlightening to do with fitness programs, art classes, speaker series, social and cultural outings, and performances.

“Downsizing when I did offered me a new kind of freedom. This summer instead of home upkeep and yard maintenance, I will be traveling to Germany with the Dixon and meeting my daughter in Paris. Yes, I’m glad I moved to Trezevant when I did.” – Bill Henry

Now is the perfect time to make the life enhancing decision to live at Trezevant. For a limited time, we are offering special incentives for our tastefully designed one-bedroom apartments.

You will wonder why you didn’t move sooner.

Welcome Visitors!

I would like to personally welcome each of you to our wonderful event which will celebrate its 66th

year in 2014! The Germantown Charity Horse Show is a very special show with huge community

involvement, amazing horses, beautiful grounds and great Southern Hospitality!

This year, we have freshened up the show grounds and improved the rings. Our goal is to make this

a family friendly event and a show that our exhibitors choose to participate in year after year.

Please check the daily show schedules in this program so that you are aware of all the events that

will take place this week. Other helpful information is available on our website: www.gchs.org.

In closing I want to mention that our Show is proud to have contributed hundreds of thousands of

dollars to local charities over the years. Thank you for choosing to spend time with us at the 2014

Germantown Charity Horse Show!

Sincerely,

Jimmy Chancellor

Germantown Charity Horse Show President

Types of Horses and Judging (continued)

forward speed than Fino, using extension of stride but still with collection; Paso Largo- performed with minimal collection and longer strides. There are three categories of Fino- Pleasure-horses are expected to walk when asked, ride on a semi-loose rein, back with ease and the horse must remain still as the rider mounts; Performance- the horse is more animated, more collected and shows a higher step with more front-end action and Fino- the horse only performs at the Fino gait, showing extremely rapid foot falls and very slow forward motion. In all three divisions, the horses cross a sounding board which allows the judges and audience to hear the rhythm of the horse’s gait and judge it’s perfection. The riders attire is also different for these three categories of Fino. Watch for Paso Finos to show “brio” in the Fino division; dramatic and fi ery animation.

RoadsterThe roadster horse belonged to the country doctor or the itinerate preacher in days gone by. He is of American standard-br d breeding, famous for its smart, fast trot and ability to go long distances. They are shown to a four-wheeled wagon, a two-wheeled bike or under saddle. Drivers or riders may be dressed in racing silks. The roadster enters the ring the wrong way, clock-wise, opposite of the direction used on the race track and judged at the jog and road-gait. As the class reverses, horses sense the excitement as they “turn it on” as if on a race track. Speed, form, conformation, soundness and expert driving are essential.

Tennessee Walking HorseThe Tennessee Walking Horse of today carries the blood which is a confl uence of the Thoroughbreds, Copperbottoms, Travelers, Hals, Grey Johns, Brooks’, Whips, Slashers, Denmarks, and a distinct cross of the Morgan. The Allen is the predominate breed in the walking horses of today. The Tennessee Walking Horse is one of the most distinctive breeds of horses developed in America. The Walker’s remarkably

smooth gait was attractive to Tennessee settlers who spent hours in the saddle overseeing their farms and plantations. The Walking Horse is synonymous with comfort; all gaits shown are devoid of jarring. These gaits include fl atfoot walk- a true four-beat gait in which the horse seems to glide over the ground all while exhibiting a slight nod of the head; Walking Horse canter- nicknamed the “rocking horse” canter is distinctive as the horse elevates his forehead in a rolling motion while the action of the hindquarters remain relatively level; The hind legs in all gaits are carried well underneath the horse creating impulsion and drive but also enabling the horse to achieve remarkable smoothness.

Single-Footing HorseThe Single-Footing horse comes from a strong background of horses bred to work and trail ride. Single-Footing is simply a term old timers used to describe the footfall of a horse’s hooves and is also known as “racking” or the “largo”. A true Single-Footing horse performs an even timed, 4 beat gait from a relaxed trail gait to the ground covering single-foot in which the horse is moving with one foot on the ground at a time. The true Single-Footing horse will be found dominating in fl at shod Trail Racking, Country Racking and Speed Racking classes at shows around the country. The Single-Footing horse comes in all shapes, colors and sizes. What is most important is how those 4 feet hit the ground! The horse should demonstrate a reasonably broad range of speed in an even timed, 4 beat, single-footing gait. At no time should the horse be allowed to become lateral or break gait for the sake of speed. These are not your «average» gaited horses. Breeders have worked diligently for many years to produce an exceptional gaited horse; one that will get you where you›re going smoothly, safely, swiftly and in style! Some of these horses are capable of reaching and exceeding exhilarating speeds of 20 mph or more. Hold onto your hat!

Page 5: Germantown Charity Horse Show Program 2014

110

Three-GaitedThe three-gaited horse, also called the walk-trot

horse, performs the three natural gaits; walk-an

animated two-beat gait; trot-a two-beat diagonal gait;

and canter-a collected slow gallop. The trot of the

three-gaited horse is slower and more collected than

that of the fi ve-gaited horse. The mane is roached and

trimmed to show a long fi ne neck. Classes for the

three-gaited are divided by height rather than sex or

age at over 15.2 Hands and Under 15.2 Hands. The

trot is the gait most emphasized and should be true,

high in action, well collected and animated.

Five- GaitedThe American saddlebred horse is not only generally

regarded as the aristocrat of the show ring, and is also

one of the most beautiful and versatile breeds. They

are shown with a full mane and tail. Judging is at the

walk, trot and canter plus the two man-made gaits,

the slow gait-a collected four beat gait with high front

action, and the rack-with all round action and speed.

The fi ve-gaited should have a springy way of moving

and extreme brilliance. Classes are divided by sex

of the horses. The white quarter boots on the front

feet are for protection in case the back feet strike the

front feet. They are judged on performance, presence,

quality, conformation, manners and soundness.

Hackney PonyThe Hackney Pony is a registered breed originating

in England. They cannot be more than 14.2 hands

high. (58 inches) They are shown with a docked tailed

and braided mane and are driven hooked to a viceroy.

The hackney has extreme action both in front and

behind and shows at two speeds of the trot; the “park

pace” and the “show your pony”, which designates a

smart trot. Form is never sacrifi ced for speed. They

are judged on performance, conformation, presence,

quality and manners.

Harness-Show PonyThe harness show pony may be any breed or

conformation of breeds and not over 12.2 hands in

height. (4 inches to a hand) They are shown with a

full mane and tail and driven with a light harness

and side check bridle to a 4-wheeled viceroy buggy.

These ponies perform at two speeds of the trot, “park

pace” and “show your pony” like the hackney pony.

Speed is not a consideration.

HunterEvery hunter must be able to jump, but not every

jumper can hunt. A good hunter must be at all times

completely in hand. He must not fi dget when stopped;

the crack of the whip and the milling hounds must

not disturb him. When on the move, he must move

willingly at the gait his rider chooses for him- he

must not fi ght for his head at the trot or hand gallop,

nor show an inclination to slow up at faster gaits.

The hunter is judged on performance, conformation,

manners and soundness.

JumperThe jumper sometimes referred to as and OPEN

HORSE doesn’t have to do anything but jump, and he

must do it without touching his obstacle; of course,

he can’t run out or refuse either. His gaits between

each obstacle, from fi rst to last inclusive, a trot, canter

or gallop shall be maintained. A jumper is judged on

performance only.

Paso FinoThe name Paso Fino translates in Spanish to “fi ne

step”. The Paso Fino horse is a naturally gaited

horse with a unique style- a four beat lateral gait.

Enthusiasts call this horse “the smoothest riding horse

in the world. There are three gaits or speeds at which

the Paso Fino are judged; Classic Fino-full collection

and very slow forward motion although the feet move

very rapidly; Paso Corto- performed with more

This is my seventh year as your Mascot and I am proud to be representing GCHS. If you see

the little ones.

Once again, welcome friends and let’s all have a fun and safe week while we are “Horse ‘n

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, clients and volunteers of The Exchange Club Family Center we would like to express our gratitude to the Germantown Charity Horse Show Committee for selecting this agency to be the recipient charity of the 2014 show. The Horse Show has been a major fundraiser for The Exchange Club Family Center for the past 15 years, earning a profi t of approximately $25,000 each year for the Center. These dollars are used to provide counseling and other services for children who have been abused or forced to witness violence in their homes. Every $50 raised can provide one hour of counseling, and thus you can see what a major impact this partnership means for the children in our community.

We are extremely proud of our relationship with this major Germantown event and would like to thank everyone who has helped us to raise these vital dollars: those individuals, businesses, and corporations who purchased ads in the program; those attending who purchase the programs during the fi ve day show; and the Horse Show Committee for making an additional donation each year to support the Center’s programs. Thank you to all of you for caring about the welfare of the children in our community.

Dear Friends,

The Germantown Charity Horse Show has served as a key partner of The Exchange Club Family Center for 15 years. With you at our side, the Center has grown from a $200,000 per year, 3-employee organization into a $2.5 million, 40-employee organization serving close to 6,000 people annually.

Sadly, as the Center continues to grow, so does the need for its services. One of the Center’s newest programs, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), provided guidance and support to 253 juveniles in dependency and neglect cases last year; yet almost 3,000 children needed those services. The Center assisted over 2,000 adults involved in domestic violence matters; yet over 23,000 people in our county needed domestic violence services.

We know that the Center’s programs make a difference; that its work changes lives in our community. Child abuse and domestic violence are often learned behaviors; with the right tools, these behaviors can be unlearned, breaking a cycle of family violence that may be generations old. Your gifts of time and treasure support positive, long-term change in the direction of many lives each day.

As Board President of The Exchange Club Family Center, I share your passion for our community, and I thank you for your part in helping us build hope in the lives of children and families throughout Shelby County, this year and for years to come.

Enjoy the show!

On Sunday, May 11, 2014, TN State Senator Brian

Kelsey of District 31 – a generous supporter of the

Germantown Charity Horse Show (GCHS) – agreed

to present a bill in January 2015 when the state senate

is back in session, to create a specialty license plate in

Tennessee that represents and supports the GCHS.

We need fans and supporters of GCHS to sign the

petition between now and January

and ultimately purchase a GCHS specialty license plate.

QUEEN OF THE 2014 GERMANTOWN CHARITY HORSE SHOW

Alex LivesayDear Horse Show Family and Friends,

I am very honored to be your Germantown Charity Horse Show Queen this year. Unlike many Queens before me, I was not born into a GCHS founding family. In fact, I was born in Virginia and did not move to the Germantown area un l I was fi ve years old. I was lucky, though, because I have a mother who has always loved horses and began encouraging my love for them at a very young age. My fi rst riding lessons were a Christmas gi in 2001, and the following spring, my parents brought my brother, sister, and me to the Germantown Charity Horse Show for the fi rst me. We had such a wonderful me that we have never missed a show since and consider

our week at the show some of the best family me we ever have. I must give due credit to Ms. Meegie Glass who invited my mom to join her in volunteering for GCHS many years ago. Of course my mother’s involvement with the organiza on opened all kinds of doors for fun and excitement for me too. I have enjoyed sor ng ribbons prior to show me, driving the welcome wagon and passing out lemonade on many sweltering days, helping our wonderful Charity meet his fans, decora ng and riding on a number of holiday parade entries, riding my own horse Jus n in the hunter division, and of course, enjoying all the fun of being a Princess in 2009. Working with horses requires a lot of hard work, and producing a great mul -breed show like ours is only possible due to the considerable energy and eff ort of so many wonderful people.

The Germantown Charity Horse Show benefi ts the Exchange Club Family Center, and I am very pleased to know that my eff orts are aiding this amazing organiza on. Family distress can happen to any person and any family at any given me. The Exchange Club Family Center plays a vital role in our community by helping children and parents during mes of crisis and great need. I am very proud that we can be a part of their work through this great horse show.

I have many wonderful memories at the Germantown Charity Horse Show, and being Queen this year has been the greatest fun and honor of all. I know an enormous amount of me and energy has been spent throughout the year to plan the fabulous Royal Ball, the Pegasus fashion show, and the fi ve days of the best horse show in the country. From the bo om of my heart, I would like to thank Mr. Bobby Lanier, Mr. Jimmy Chancellor, and all the members of the Germantown Charity Horse Show for their commitment and dedica on to bringing the Germantown Charity Horse Show to life. Their eff orts have been great and unending, and I especially want to thank them for inves ng in me to be your 2014 Queen. I hope everyone will join me in reveling in the excitement, family atmosphere, and fun at this year’s 66th annual Germantown Charity Horse Show.

Sincerely yours,

Queen Alex Livesay

The fox hunting scene on the rim depicts a fox hunt with horses and riders, hounds and the wily fox which seems to be looking over his shoulder, laughing at the riders. Other owners of this limited edition include private individuals and hunts such as the Golden’s Bridge Hounds in Bedford, NY. Designed by Bill and cast by the Lugar Bronze Foundry and Gallery, this 20 inch, 32 pound trophy will be given permanently to the horse and rider combination for winning the classic three times. the greatest number of points will be declared the winner. In the event of equality of points, the

fastest time taken between the starting line and the fi nishing line will decide the place awarded.

Sponsor: The Harold Walker Family

As a competitor, one of Harold Walker’s favorite classes was the Gamblers Choice. He

competed in it regularly during the 1960’s and, later as President of the Germantown Charity

Horse Show. He revived the class and it has, once again, become a crowd pleaser and competitor

favorite. The trophy in this class was designed by Germantown native, Andrea Lugar, and given in

loving memory of Harold, by his family. Ribbons are donated by family friends, Mark & Suzanne

White.
