What is the German YMCA in London?

Founded in 1860, the Association is one of the oldest YMCAs in London and has been part of the English YMCA movement since that time. We are also one of the largest charities with German roots operating in England and support the German-speaking and local community in a variety of ways, from organised events and programmes, assistance to individuals in crisis situations, to material and practical support for other organisations.

On the following pages you will find details of our regular programmes and events: our Parent-Toddler group, the au pair Tea Morning, the Anglo-German Circle, Schubertiade Concerts, trips and visits, and much more.

Our home has been in the Lancaster Gate, Bayswater area north of Hyde Park in central London since 1959. Here, in Craven Terrace, is our Association’s centre and the Lancaster Hall Hotel. The hotel was opened in 1973 by the German YMCA and offers both the tourist and business traveller an ideal base in central London at affordable prices.

Who can take part in our programmes?

We are a Christian movement and stand for respect and freedom for all, tolerance and understanding between people of different faiths, opinions and race.

We welcome people of different Christian traditions, those of other faiths and those of none.

Although, because of our Association’s heritage, the name contains “German”, “Young” and “Men”, we welcome anyone of any age and nationality, male and female. Our doors are open to all, members and non-members alike.

What other services do we offer?

Through our Youth Secretaries and the Programme Secretary (who is also the Association’s Chaplain) we aim to give advice to individuals, to those in crisis situations and those just in need of general advice. We also offer an au pair placement service in cooperation with IN VIA and the VIJ in Germany.

We try to create a network of people who, through direct contact with each other, are able to support one another on an ongoing basis outside the activities in our centre.

If you missed it in the August edition…In recent times more and more people leave booking for meals to the last minute. This makes organising more complicated and sometimes the kitchen struggles to get enough ingredients at short notice. Therefore, we have decided to give early bookings £1 off to encourage more people to book by the specified date in the programme.

Voices in HarmonyThe October Show Motown by Voices in Harmony was again a great success. We raised £350 for The West London Mission. Many thanks to Jane, Frank, Terry, Wally and Ryan and the audience! The Frikadellen before the show were special, too!

Bring & BuyOctober’s market and food stalls raised £670 for the Caritas Bakhita House, a safe house for women. Many of the guests there had been literally enslaved in this country before they came to the safe house. Thanks to all who contributed to the fundraising in one way or another!

Da sie den Stern sahen, wurden sie hoch erfreut. Matthäus 2,10

Seit vielen Jahren habe ich immer wieder versucht, Gedanken zur Menschwerdung Gottes so in ein Bild zu setzen, dass dies ‘Evangelium’ anschaulich wird und Freude bereitet. Dabei lasse ich mich seit einigen Jahren durch die Monatssprüche zum Weihnachtsmonat leiten. Und da ich jetzt vorzugsweise Gestaltungsmaterial benutze, was die Natur mir bietet, war mir bereits durch das Stichwort ‘Stern’ im Frühjahr klar, in welche Richtung mich dies führen wird; für Stern und Himmel brauchte ich dominierend Blütenblätter in Gelb- und Blautönen. So waren mir, wie immer, über eine Reihe von Monaten Weihnachts-gedanken nicht fern und öffneten Türen, durch die ich sie gleiten lassen konnte.

So, wie der obige Monatsspruch zitiert wird, spricht er uns gar nicht an. Es ist eine Mitteilung, durch die wir nicht gefordert sind. ‘Sie’ werden uns nicht vorgestellt und bleiben namenlos. Warum sie beim Anblick des Sternes ‘hoch erfreut wurden’, wird nicht erklärt. Das bekommt erst Sinn, wenn man den Bericht an seiner Quelle als Ganzes liest, eben die Erscheinung der Weisen aus dem Morgenland. Dazu die berechtigte Frage von Alwyn Marriage in einem englischen Gedicht unserer Zeit: “Wer waren sie, diese Männer an der Schwelle zwischen Realität und Legende? Haben sie durch den verhängnisvollen Zufall, Weise zu sein, die Bedeutung der ihnen widerfahrenen Offenbarung verstanden?” Erst einige Jahrhunderte nach ihrem Auftreten, werden die Sterndeuter mit Namen und Rang ausgestattet und als erkennbare Persönlichkeiten von den alten Meistern der Christlichen Kunst eifrig aufgegriffen.

Das führte bis heute zu unzählbaren Darstellungen, wie auch zur Popularität im weihnachtlichen Brauchtum, die ich nicht zu bereichern brauche.

Hierzu das Gedicht “Der Stern”, das Wilhelm Busch in seinem, so eigenen Stil geschrieben hat: “Hätt einer auch fast mehr Verstand als die drei Weisen aus Morgenland und ließe sich dünken, er wär wohl nie dem Sternlein nachgereist wie sie; dennoch, wenn nun das Weihnachtsfest seine Lichtlein wonniglich scheinen lässt, fällt auch auf sein verständig Gesicht, er mag es merken oder nicht, ein freundlicher Strahl des Wundersterns von dazumal”.

Diesen Wunderstern, das Licht der Welt(Joh. 8,12), ein Licht zu erleuchten die Heiden (Lukas 2,32), der auf keinem Weihnachtsbild fehlt, den wollte ich doch aufgreifen, als Zeichen der Erfüllung göttlicher Verheißung, mit der ganzen Menschheit auf Ewig in den

What a restless, unsettling notion. Why? Because we seek and pursue far too many things in this, our complex, confusing and restless world, that are totally alien to peace.

For example, one of my favourite quotes from Immanuel Kant comes to mind: “One is not rich by what one possesses, but rather by what one knows how to dispense with dignity. And it could be that humanity becomes richer by becoming poorer, that it gains by losing”. In my understanding, chasing riches in all its forms is one, if not the main reason that stands in the way of peace.

How often do we long ‘for a moment of peace’, only to find that it has been snatched out of our reach in the blink of an eye.

It is almost impossible to define ‘peace’ satisfactorily, let alone achieve it. Even in the most general and personal sense, peace seems to be out of our reach: peace as a state of quiet, free from disturbance, agitation, fear, quarrel, peace as a state of harmony, order and security. At the same time all these conditions belong to the indispensable foundation for peace in our society, between nations, around the world. After 2000 years of Christianity we still have everything to do what Christ has taught us. And against all odds we are not released from trying. The means are there in one, all embracing action, and that is ‘love’.

This realisation is present in all religions, in all cultures. In the book ‘God of a Hundred Names’ a citation from Plato is offered for meditation: “The desire and pursuit of the whole is called love”.

Bund der Gnade zu treten. Davon singen die fröhlichen Weihnachtslieder in unserem Gesangbuch. Sie künden in vielen Weisen immer von dem Einen: Gott hat uns in unbegreiflicher Liebe seinen eigenen Sohn gesandt. Das ist die große Freude, die allem Volk widerfahren wird (Lukas 2,11).

Aus dem Dunkeln hält Gottes Hand seine Schöpfung, unsere Welt, in das Licht des Heils. “Der Retter ist da! Gottes Hand ruht wieder auf der Welt und lässt die Welt nicht mehr los!” (Dietrich Bonhoeffer). Das ist Gottes Segen, das Weihnachtsgeschenk ohne Verpackung, ohne goldene Schleife.

Und da will ich auch die Verkündigung des Friedens in der Weihnachtsbotschaft nicht übersehen. Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe und Friede auf Erden bei den Menschen seines Wohlgefallens (Lukas 2,14). Zu diesem Frieden fordert uns die Losung für das neue Jahr auf. Aber wir brauchen ihn nicht zu suchen; er ist in Gottes Wort da, der Friede Gottes, welcher höher ist denn alle Vernunft (Phil. 4,7). Deshalb habe ich die Noahtaube (1. Mose 8) als Friedenskünderin Gottes mit ins Bild gebracht, doch absichtlich ohne Ölblattzweig, denn diese Taube weist ja als Sinnbild des Heiligen Geistes über die Friedenskünderin hinaus als Beistand in unserer Not um den rechten Frieden.

Weihnachten ist ein Fest voller Zeichen. Das ich aber über der Gestaltung des Sterns, der Hand Gottes und der Taube die Trinität ins Bild gebracht habe, dass war nicht mein Ausgangspunkt, sondern ein durch Meditation entstandenes Ergebnis. Es sagt mit Martin Luther im 5. Vers des Liedes “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” (EG 4): “Lob sei Gott dem Vater g’tan; Lob sei Gott seim ein’gen Sohn, Lob sei Gott dem Heilgen Geist immer und in Ewigkeit”.

Au Pair ServicesThe German YMCA offers an au pair placement service in co-operation with the IN VIA and VIJ associations in Germany. To find the right family for the right au pair and vice versa is one of our aims. To facilitate exchange between cultures is another. With our programmes, which include social-cultural events especially addressed to au pairs, we aim to give a broad experience of country, history and culture. We also offer the intercultural qualification course “Dare to Differ”.

Telephone ContactWith the support of the trustees of the former German Old People’s Home “Homelands” we have a project for anybody who is a native German speaker and lives in the UK. If you can not meet other German speakers in person this is an opportunity to talk to someone in your language. For further information please phone our office and we will put you in contact with Ursula Mitchell.

Volunteer Placement ServicesIn co-operation with other organisations we offer young people the opportunity to volunteer abroad for a period of three to twelve months. Project themes could include: youth, sport, culture, social care, environment. Our aim is to provide young people with an intercultural learning experience and to encourage social integration. For further information, or if your organisation would like to host a volunteer, please contact Alice Melsheimer by phone or e-mail.
