1.1 The Alphabet / Pronunciation
–––
If you know the German alphabet you are basically all set except for a couple of hidden/muted sounds:
• e after an i
• Lied/song and Krieg/war
• Mit/with and Miete/rent
German Pronunciation
• h is, contrary to the muted French h- very much pronounced in German
• Humor/humor, hier/here
• With one exception: H in the middle of a word
• ein Sohn/son Ton - Sohn wo - wohnen
• The hardest sounding combination of letters in German is the ch
• mach! imperative form of machen/do it!
• The girl/Mädchen or Hündchen/puppy sound perfectly soft by comparison.
• Umlauts on three vowels: a o u
• The plural form of apple/Apfel → Äpfel/apples
• oft (often) → öfter (more often)
• unter/underneath - über/above
• The German s is a soft s
• English so →soft German so
• English sun → Sonne in German
• The s is a hard sound only when doubled: er muss/he must → Kuss/kiss

1.2 Personal Pronouns Formal vs. Informal
–––
The subject of a sentence (I, you, he, she, we and so forth) is often a personal pronoun and the subject case is the nominative case.
The Accusative case for direct and Dative case for indirect objects
Three ways to say you: du, ihr, and SieInformal singular, informal plural and a formal You
There are two ways to address people: formally and informally
It is far better to be cautiously polite and use the formal Sie
Notice the upper case Sie in written German even though it is a pronoun
Nominative (nom.) Accusative (acc.) Dative (dat.)ich (I) mich (me) mir (me)
du (you) (s., inf.) dich (you) (s., inf.) dir (you) (s., inf.)er (he) ihn (him) ihm (him)
sie (she) sie (her) ihr (her)es (it) es (it) ihm (it)
wir (we) uns (us) uns (us)ihr (you) (pl., inf.) euch (you) (pl., inf.) euch (you) (pl., inf.)
sie (they) sie (them) ihnen (them)Sie (you) (s. or pl.,
form.)Sie (you) (s. or pl.,
form.)Ihnen (you) (s. or pl.,
form.)
