Beginning wi th t h i s i s s u e , w e i n a u g u r a t e a new Column on r e f e r e n c e s t o papers publ i shed on Geochemical Reference Samples of minera ls , rocks and o r e s (GRS). The first c o n t r i b u t i o n i n t h i s Column, named Geostan#aBef torner ( s h o r t f o r Geostandard References Corner ) , concerns papers which have appeared i n a n a l y t i c a l and geochemical j o u r n a l s from January 1979 through December 1980.

The p r a c t i c a l u s e f u l n e s s of such a column seems se l f -ev ident . The disseminat ion of analy- t i ca l r e s u l t s on GRS i n many d i f f e r e n t a n a l y t i c a l and e a r t h sc ience j o u r n a l s is a real o b s t a c l e for an easy f low o f in format ion among geoanalys ts . It i s one of t h e aims of Geostandards Newsletter t o c o l l e c t o r set p o i n t e r s t o such d a t a .

I n a d d i t i o n t o papers d e a l i n g wi th t h e p r e s e n t a t i o n of new d a t a on GRS, r e f e r e n c e s t o papers d e a l i n g wi th t h e g e n e r a l problems concer- n ing GRS w i l l be a l s o g iven:

- methods of p r e p a r a t i o n

- homogeneity s t u d i e s

- c r i t i ca l eva lua t ion o f compiled d a t a

- information on new GRS. . .

To begin w i t h , 148 and 131 r e f e r e n c e s have been gleaned i n t h e a v a i l a b l e literature f o r t h e t w o y e a r s , 1979 and 1980.

Tables 1 and 2 show t h e d i s t r i b u t i o n of t h e s e r e f e r e n c e D a D e r s i n v a r i o u s j o u r n a l s . I t is s e e n t h a t , Geostandards Newsletter occupies t first p l a c e .

The frequency of use of each a n a l y t i c a l technique is given i n Tables 3 and 4. It is i n t e r e s t i n g t o note t h a t neutron ac t iva t ion ana lys i s i s the f a v o r i t e method f o r t h e (trace) ana lys i s of GRS. Atomic absorption spectrometry and X-ray f luorescence are ranked 2 and 3 r e spec t ive ly .

It i s c e r t a i n t h a t the present bibliography is not complete. Therefore, readers are inv i t ed t o draw our a t t e n t i o n t o add i t iona l re ferences which might have escaped our search o r t o those appearing i n Journa ls not e a s i l y access ib l e t o us. I t is hoped t o present and update such b ib l iographies pe r iod ica l ly i n t h i s Column.
