GEOSPATIAL WORLD AWARDS CONFERED ON LEADING ORGANISATIONS
PRESS RELEASE
Zaandam, The Netherlands 15th
May, 2013: Geospatial Media and Communications, the leading media agency
in Geospatial sector, today conferred its annual Geospatial World Awards to 19 organisations from the domain
and it’s end-user agencies for developing innovative geospatial tools and products; implementing conducive
policies and applying geospatial technologies for delivering efficient results in the most resource efficient
manner. The annual awards are given in three categories – Geospatial World Excellence Awards (for
applications), Geospatial World Policy Awards (for policy implementation) and Geospatial World Innovation
Awards (for technology innovation).
Over 200 award nominations were received from the call for nominations from the world over, which were
judged by a panel of expert judges including Matt Ball, Founder and Editor, Vector1 Media, USA; Robert
Samborski, Private Consultant and former CEO, GITA, USA; Geoff Zeiss, Director OGC and Former Director –
Autodesk, Canada; Prof. Arup Dasgupta, Managing Editor Geospatial World Magazine, India and Dr.
Hrishikesh Samant, Associate Prof & Head, Dept of Geology, St. Xavier's College, India.
The awards were conferred during the Awards Night and Gala Dinner function of Geospatial World Forum,
which is the largest and the most premium conference hosted by Geospatial Media in the domain. Geospatial
World Forum is being held at Beurs-World Trade Centre, Rotterdam, The Netherlands from 13-16 May, 2013.
The mega-geospatial event is being supported by over 40 sponsors and partner organisatons and is being
attended by over 1200 experts from the domain from more than 80 countries.
The award winners are:
GEOSPATIAL WORLD EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Disaster Management and Mitigation
Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency - USA and Previstar Inc. USA
Award for: Their mobile application 'Incident Resource Management System - CPS Mobile' which
helps the State of Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, to respond to any incident very
quickly by identifying the closest resource (equipment and human) and quickly request them and
deploy them via their mobile device no matter where they are.
Agriculture
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and Sovzond Company Ltd. Russia
Award for: 'System of State Land Monitoring' which automates the Agricultural Land Atlas and The
Remote Sensing Monitoring System, increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of vegetation and
soil data collection as well as the quality of the acquired data, allowing the government, enterprises
and farmers to get most credible information about agricultural lands thereby improving the
effectiveness of agricultural lands management in Russia.
Environment Protection, Monitoring and Management
Australian National Water Commission And Sinclair Knight Merz
Award for: 'National Atlas of Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems' which is benefitting people
involved in agriculture, mining, CSG, shale gas and tight gas developments, along with the
government regulation of those industries including researchers thereby supporting policy-makers,
land managers and water resource managers take decisions which ensure environment protection.
Visitor Information Systems
Saudi Authority for Tourism and Antiquities, Saudi Arabia
Award for: Design, development and implementation of the 'Tourism Map – GIS Based Tourism
Information Portal' that provides a map based, dynamic and interactive information to visitors and
tourists, resulting in a informed, an enriching, experience.
Transportation Management
Land Transport Authority of Singapore
Award for: ' GIS@LTA ' initiative which has developed a Land Transport GIS Hub for the enterprise,
capable of meshing engineering design with transport planning, to improve road and construction
safety and information services to commuters and motorists, which also incorporates the 'Black
Spot Programme' that identifies accident-prone areas, which has yielded significant reduction in
traffic accidents.
Urban Planning
Norrkopings Kommun, Sweden and Agency9, Sweden
Award for: Application of 'Web-based 3D Visualisation for Project Communication and Collaboration
in Urban Planning' of Norrkopings Kommun, Sweden, thereby attracting citizens to participate in the
urban planning process.
Land Management
Shenzhen Municipal Commission of Urban Planning and Land Resources
Award for: Developing and implementing 'China's first city geo-database', with distributed large
scale spatial information integrating 3D city landscape model and VR technology to represent and
register land rights and demonstrate China's success of exploring non-western urban GIS practice
pattern.
Enterprise GIS (Land Records)
Directorate of Settlement and Land Records, Government of Goa, India
Award for: Developing and utilising 'Dharnaksh - the Land Records Portal', making Goa the first state
in India to implement a robust, reliable and people friendly land records management system which
offers the citizen certified copies of land records and rights of any cadastre parcel in the state.
Resources Management: Water
Azersu OJSC And Odakent Ltd. , Azerbaijan
Award for: Developing and utilising 'GeoSP@TIAList' for management of water and wastewater
Infrastructure of Azerbaijan thereby dramatically improving the life quality standards through better
water supply and sanitation which has also helped conserve this precious resource.
Utility Services - Water Distribution & Transmission
EPCOR Water Services Inc., Canada
Award for: Developing and integrating its spatial database with its work management database. The
solution is then used to manage and prioritise work in water distribution and transmission thereby
improving the reliability and functioning of the water utility services within the City of Edmonton.
City Planning and Land Management
Al Ain Municipality
Award for: 'Building Permits through GIS ' designed to address in real time all inquiries, designs,
extensions, revisions, or operational changes required for the issuance of building permits, thereby
drastically improving the efficiency of the entire process of planning and managing the City of Al Ain.
GEOSPATIAL WORLD POLICY AWARDS
Standards
Agentschap voor Geografische Informatie Vlaanderen (AGIV), Belgium
Award for: Establishing and adopting the 'Central Reference Address database - CRAB', an authentic
standardised geographical data source, offering sufficient quality guarantee, giving evidence of a
distinct management thereby making communication like post deliveries, emergency interventions,
administration, more efficient.
SDI
Coordinating Agency for Federal Geographical Information, Switzerland
Award for: Establishing the 'geo.admin.ch: the geoportal of the Swiss Confederation' using open
source and open standards, software in a cloud environment. This methodology has also been
successfully emulated by a number of nations thereby allowing their citizens and authorities fast
spatial data access. The geo.admin.ch has resulted in a fourfold increase in public investment and
private market related to spatial data.
Knowledge Transfer
United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and NASA (Earth Science
Division-Applied Sciences Program)
Award for: Their technology and knowledge transfer initiative - 'NASA Applied Sciences Program'
from their Earth Sciences Division where efforts to pioneer innovative methods to apply Earth
observations to support the economy, safety of life and property, and quality of life are the goal. The
Program supports global efforts at both applied research and targeted decision-support projects in
themes, such as Disasters, Water
Resources, Health & Air Quality, Ecological Forecasting, Climate, and Agriculture.
Geospatial Information Act
Indonesia Geospatial Information Agency (BIG)
Award for: Drafting the 'Geospatial Information Act' which was accepted and passed by the
President of the Republic of Indonesia as the 'Geospatial Information Law', wherein the 'right of
people, both individually and corporately, to get the appropriate geospatial information and use it
for the purposes of the public is assured', thereby setting an example for the rest of world to
emulate.
3D Standards
Kadaster, The Netherlands and Geonovum, The Netherlands
Award for: For being the harbingers in establishing and implementing a 'National Standard for 3D
Geo-information' by integrating the national 2D standard with the 3D City GML OGC standard, and
the development of a toolkit for implementing 3D standard according to ISO for country wide
implementation of 3D geo-information.
GEOSPATIAL WORLD INNOVATION AWARDS
Image Data Management and Processing
Rasdaman GmbH, Germany
Award for: 'Rasdaman - raster data manager' a high-performance Big Data Analytics engine which
supports flexible and fast ad-hoc retrieval of massive multi-dimensional raster data, leading to a
democratization of data and increased availability on all levels, this in turn allowing researchers gain
new insights, companies establish new business models, and governments improve citizen
information.
Sensors
Visual Intelligence LLP., USA
Award for: 'iOne Sensor Tool Kit Architecture', which bring on-demand sensor capabilities to better
meet current and future mission needs for wide area surveillance, multi-sensor intelligence, and high
metric accuracy using digital geo-imaging sensors that can deliver required intelligence for forestry
and agriculture, pollution, land and water management, mineralogy, and other resource planning.
Surveying
RIEGL LMS Gmbh, Austria
Award for: 'RIEGL VQ-820-GU' hydrographic Airborne laser Scanner, specifically designed for
repetitive surveying of inshore waters to evaluate reservoir sedimentation, river degradation and
also sea beds or lake beds. Its high spatial resolution, scan speed and wide field of view make it
second to none in this category of laser scanners.
