We believe that BIM represents the future of our industry and we have implemented the approach on many of our projects. We’re confident that it has helped us deliver better than we could have using traditional methods.

We are providing advice to the UK government on its BIM strategy and we were one of the first companies to adopt ISO 44001, which provides guidance on successful approaches to collaborative working within the supply chain

and ultimately helps us to help our clients make better decisions.

In addition to this UK government advice, our colleague Barry Hall, a principal GIS consultant, is a member of the BSI Committee representing B/555 Construction, Modelling and Data Exchange, who represent the interests of BSI across Europe (CEN) and worldwide (ISO).

Geospatial, GIS & Geomatics Our Services

As we move towards smart cities and a digital revolution for our buildings and infrastructure, information will play an increasingly significant role. BIM is an important step towards realising this vision - redefining and challenging how we deliver projects in our industry, changing everything from the tools we use, the skills we require and our relationships with clients.

Geospatial, GIS & Geomatics Delivery Enhancement Tools

With our surveys producing more and more data, the industry needs a way to share this information with clients, contractors, and colleagues without them requiring expensive software packages and high-spec computers.

Cirrus Insite is a web-based portal where heavydata such as point clouds are hosted, with thecapability for the entire project team to access. Using the tool you can view the data completely in-browser, offering an intuitive interface un-reliant on any installed software.

Users can perform simple analysis operationssuch as measurements in 2D and 3D, cut and fill analytics to determine approximate

extraction and infilling volumes for proposed linear developments through uneven terrain, point cloud feature labelling, shaded height maps, and toggleable feature layers.

With rapid data load speed, navigating complex point clouds is possible even on a standard issue laptop, making communication of issues, or optioneering discussion possible in real time. Rather than sending screenshots or requiring your team to have software, this in-browser speed means you can now share and discuss data within a live meeting environment, facilitating fast decision making to drive projects forward.

Cirrus Insite offers a Digital Twin Platform for survey data. Completely developed in-house, the platform provides a secure, convenient solution for viewing, sharing and analysing 2D & 3D survey deliverables such as point clouds and orthophotos. More people and projects are now able to benefit from the vast amounts of intelligent data that our aerial surveys provide.

Spatial Common Data Environment

Better managed and more accessible geospatial data for everyone, saving time and reducing errors.

Geospatial, GIS & Geomatics Delivery Enhancement Tools

Our Spatial Common Data Environment (sCDE) provides a centrally managed spatial data location, offering a single source of truth. The system has been completely developed in house, designed to solve the issue of spatial data not being accessible when in a design CDE such as ProjectWise.

We create scaleable, automated and auditable sCDEs for clients, incorporating varying disciplines’ data formats while ensuring interoperability. By establishing an sCDE in the earliest project stages, data can be efficiently used throughout the full project or asset lifecycle. Data is costly to gather; we can make sure you and your clients don’t need to do it twice.

Our sCDE was a key contributor to Atkins becoming the first UK BIM Kite mark certified consultancy.

Geospatial, GIS & Geomatics Our Work

Our WorkWe’ve worked on all major infrastructure projects in the UK, and worldwide, over the past 25 years. Our wealth of knowledge and alignment with the highest industry standards (building information modelling (BIM) including ISO 19650 processes) makes us the perfect partner on large infrastructure projects. Scottish Power Renewables Digital

EIA Strategy

We collaborated with environmental and renewables specialists to create a comprehensive Digital EIA strategy for offshore and onshore wind development within ScottishPower, ahead of major contract awards. Collaborative client workshops defined a practical and high achieving definition of Digital Assessment, and set out contractual, data, and regulatory requirements.

Environment Led Design

We took a revolutionary approach to design six potential rail routes for Bedford to Cambridge in just six weeks. Given environmental constraints are the most frequent cause of costly design rework, we assessed these first, conducting multi-criteria GIS analysis to generate centrelines for our designers.

Transport for London (TfL), Aerial Surveys, London, UK

The operator of London’s underground rail system required high-resolution aerial imagery and topographic mapping to assist with planning and to inform its upgrades to the network. TfL requested as close to 2cm resolution imagery and survey accuracy as could be achieved.

NetCreate

NetCreate is a digital tool which uses global open source GIS datasets to create a coarse wastewater network for master planning purposes on a repeatable basis, using minimum data requirements of population distribution, road layout and Digital Terrain Model (DTM). The datasets are used to automatically assign the route of least resistance from each property along defined roads.

ThamesConnectTo improve coordination and communication between Thames Water/eight2O’s internal programmes of work and wider stakeholders, we sought a digital solution using a Digital Incubator. We developed stakeholder engagement strategies and undertook several iterative build, measure and learn cycles to finally create ‘ThamesConnect’: a geospatial platform that allows internal and external programme teams to share programme data, achieving exponential cost savings.

Network Rail, Colwyn Bay

We undertook several drone surveys on behalf on Network Rail to assess the condition of sea defences for exposed coastal rail lines. The use of drones allowed for capture of high-resolution images, from which a 3D point cloud was generated, acting as a perfect digital replica of the real site and reducing the need for access to potentially hazardous environments.

Geospatial, GIS & Geomatics Our Work

Our Work

Nuclear Site Selection Tool

We supported the criteria development and assessment of suitability and risk for future site selection of nuclear power stations. Criteria were mapped out using geographic information systems to help assess potential sites for new installations.

Vegetation Encroachment Monitoring

We developed a remote proof of concept methodology to identify vegetation encroachment of rail lines, solely from LIDAR. Our automation of this complex analysis method will enable safe digital remote working, and reduce costs for UK railways.

A14, Highways Agency

Thanks to continued success supporting the contractor delivery team, the Geospatial Team has significantly expanded to being a key collaborator in the A14’s BIM strategy, identifying the appropriate strategy and As-Built client data deliverables to maximise the benefits to the project.

Havant Thicket Reservoir

The new reservoir will be the first for the south east since the 1970s, and represents a decade long project for Atkins. During the project we are prioritising stringent data versioning, interoperability between our sCDE and design systems, and clear visualisation of the final design.

A9 Spatial Data Management

Our work on the A9 has put our data management platforms on the frontline of infrastructure development in Scotland, providing seamless BIM compliant data management support via our sCDE and webGIS, alongside complex analysis services, and STEM support.

Marine Scotland - Nmpi Marine Portal

We were tasked to design and build a fully public custom visualisation portal for marine data relevant to planning decisions. Now active (https://marinescotland.atkinsgeospatial.com/nmpi), members of the planning community can overlay, query and conduct simple analysis, providing a single point of truth.

Kenya Transportation Gap Study

Kenya is experiencing rapid population growth and increasing urbanisation which is putting strain on a transport network with a historic investment deficit. We have conducted a study to identify gaps in the countries transport infrastructure and propose interventions for addressing these gaps.

HEPConnect - Heathrow

As part of an integrated delivery team we facilitatated improved engagement with utility companies impacted by the Heathrow Expansion Programme. To date, the overall deliverables include HEP Connect Communications Hub, Doc Portal and Map.
