Call 2: GRID-based Systems for solving complex problems

“Objectives: – To expand the potential of the Grid and peer-to-peer approaches to

solving complex problems which can not be solved with current technologies in application fields such as, but not limited to, industrial design, engineering and manufacturing, health, genomics and drug design, environment, critical infrastructures, energy, business and finance, and new media.

– To overcome present architectural and design limitations hampering the use and wider deployment of computing and knowledge Grids and to enrich its capabilities by including new functionalities required for complex problem solving. This should help the larger uptake of Grid type architectures and extend the concept from computation Grids to

knowledge Grids, eventually leading to a “semantic Grid”.”

Conclusions

Grid technologies will revolutionise the Internet of tomorrow as the Web did for the Internet of today

Grid reseach represents a key priority in IST-FP6 and will serve as a means for the evolution of ERA

The shift of Grids from eScience to industry will in future reap the benefits for European business, industry and society

Need for stronger co-ordination of existing Community, Member States and international Grid research initiatives, e.g. through a “Virtual Grid Middleware Laboratory”

“Objectives:– To integrate and validate, in the context of user-driven large scale

testbeds, the state-of-the-art technology that is essential for preparing the future upgrades in the infrastructure deployed across Europe. This should help support all research fields and identify the opportunities that such technology offers together with its limitations. The work is essential for fostering the early deployment in Europe of Next Generation Information and Communications Networks based upon all-optical technologies and new Internet protocols and for incorporating the most up-to-date middleware.”

FocusFocus::– “Research on advanced interfaces, low cost sensors and

possibly robotics to be integrated in assistive devices, and

information modeling and web semantics to improve web

usability for digitally disadvantaged persons.”– “ Development and demonstration of intelligent housing for

persons with special needs to be addressed in an integrated approach. ”

– “Networking of research teams, in the domain of assistive technologies to strengthen the research effort on the quality of life of users with physical, sensory or cognitive impairments as well as in the domain of design-for-all for mainstream products and services exploring, for example, cognitive demands and new multimodal platforms. ”M

Call 2: eInclusioneInclusion

Barrier-free technologies: – focus on mainstream products and systems, including public

services, which must be designed in such a way that they can meet the requirements of the widest possible range of users and use situations

Empowering technologies – focus on a broad range of intelligent assistive devices and

systems for persons with disabilities, which must be developed and improved. Leading-edge technologies must be identified and harnessed to the tasks of enabling users to live independent lives, to achieve self-fulfilment and to realise their full potential.
