born in 1887 on a dairy farm
Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, November 15
Died Thursday, March 6, 1986, age 98
Early Life Went to study art in
Chicago at age 16, but grew bored
Moved to New York City and continued her studies
Accepted position as art teacher in 1912
Brought in a live cow for her students to draw!
A ChanceFriend of O’Keeffe took paintings to art show to
display them
Exhibited in New York City in 1918
Alfred Stieglitz, a photographer, was really attracted to O’Keeffe’s paintings
Love at First SightStieglitz loved O’Keeffe’s paintings
Stieglitz and O’Keeffe fell in love and were married in 1924
O’Keeffe became friends with other artists and helped Stieglitz run the art gallery

O’Keefe moved to Albiquire, New Mexico
Got inspiration from wild plants and animal bones she found around her house
Moved to Santa Fe in 1984 and stayed there until she died

Had art lessons with a painter at age ten
She was given the Presidential medal of Freedom in 1984
She started to lose her central vision as she got older
She had made 200 paintings of flowers alone
She sold a collection of paintings called “Calla Lily” for $25,000, the highest amount to be paid for a painting.
A dinosaur fossil is named after her
