Program NotesHandel was a major benefactor of the Foundling Hos-pital, London’s first home for abandoned children. The composer’s benefit concerts for the hospital raised thousands of pounds, and these performances also established Messiah as a central work in the English repertoire . In his will the composer left a score and parts of the work to the Hospital .

The Foundling Hospital was established by Royal Charter in 1739, as a “Hospital for the Maintenance and Education of Exposed and Deserted Young Children”, to provide a refuge for foundlings. The first of its kind in England, the Royal Charter was the result of the tireless efforts of Captain Thomas Coram, a suc-cessful shipwright and sailor .

From the start, the artistic influence on the Hospital was established, led by the artist William Hogarth . He was a founding governor of the Hospital and recognised the opportunity for art-ists to display their work whilst supporting the charity, by donating works to decorate the fine rooms in the building – chiefly the Governor's offices, where polite society and potential donors could be received . There were no art galleries in England at this time and Hogarth’s designs were no less ground-breaking for artists than Coram’s were for abandoned children .

The unique environment of the Foundling Hospital, which had been designed from the outset not only as a children’s home, but as a place of polite assembly, meant that it quickly became one of the most fashion-able places to visit during the reign of George II, and a hub of philanthropic activity, where artists, children and patrons were able to benefit together from the contem-porary culture of ‘enlightened self-interest’ .

Alongside Coram and Hogarth, the other major benefactor was George Frideric Handel . The composer had already supported the “Fund for Decay’d Musi-cians”, established in 1738, and offered the Foundling Hospital Committee “a performance of vocal and instrumental music” to raise funds for the completion of the Hospital’s chapel .

The 1749 concert took place three weeks after Handel’s offer to the Committee, and was a great suc-cess . The concert included the music for the Royal Fireworks and a Peace Anthem, both first performed in April that year, and extracts from Solomon which had

been a new oratorio that season . Handel’s selection of movements on the subject of the building of Solomon’s temple was appropriate for a fund-raising concert for

the chapel, which had been structurally completed but still lacked furniture and windows . The

final work in the concert was the Found-ling Hospital anthem, which Handel created largely from existing material (including the ‘Hallelujah chorus’ which

he borrowed from his then little-known Mes-siah) with words from the Scriptures . Handel’s

conducting score of this work is now on display in the Foundling

Museum in London England . Handel continued to serve the charity “in

his way”; the concert in 1749 was so success-ful that the governors asked him to put on another concert the following year, and he chose to perform Messiah . The oratorio had been composed eight years earlier but had not yet been well received by London audiences; its few performances had been overshadowed by a debate over whether it was

appropriate to perform a work with so sacred a subject in a theatre, which was commonly associated with more worldly interests . The performance in the Foundling Hospital Chapel, for the benefit of such a worthy cause, made the oratorio acceptable to London audiences, and Handel gave an annual benefit performance of Messiah in the chapel thereafter, a practice which continued after his death, and which also established Messiah in the concert repertoire . In his will the composer directed that a score and parts of the oratorio be given to the Hospital, so that benefit performances could continue.

So when you don’t have the privilege of having a family... youth ask... “Who is going to buy my birthday cake this year? Who is going to remember me?”

Former Youth in Care, Youth Leaving Care Hearings, 2012

Over half of the children in the care of Family & Chil-dren’s Services (F&CS) are youth who need to transi-tion to living independently far sooner than the average Ontario youth . In Ontario 51% of young adults 20-29 reside at home .* For many youth in care this is not an option .

Children and youth exposed to higher levels of stress, violence, addictions, and mental health issues in their families often have greater challenges with social interaction, health outcomes and at school . Few have any support networks or have learned the resilience skills which would assist their transition to adulthood . These youth are some of the most vulner-able citizens in our community facing multiple barri-ers to becoming successful adults as a result of early experiences .

When a youth does not have family support, where can they turn for the assistance they need? Below are messages recently received from F&CS youth:

• Where do I go when residence closes for the holidays?

• I have lost my wallet and have no ID!• I have no place to live – my boyfriend kicked me

out . Where do I go?• I have been sick and missed some classes . How

can I catch up? I will never catch up?

supported programs such as the Education Support Program and the Enrichment Program . Prior to the

establishment of these programs, youth leaving care frequently dropped out of post-secondary programs as a result of fi nancial strain. This January sees all of the F&CS youth who enrolled in programs in the autumn successfully returning to their programs for the next education term .

Education Support Program — assists youth in care and former youth in care with post-secondary educa-tion costs including tools or supplies associated with their programs . Examples include:

• Costly program textbooks• Scrubs for nursing program• Instruments for a dental hygienist program• Knives for culinary arts program• Tools for a specialised mechanics apprenticeship

Enrichment Program — All of the children in the care of Family & Children’s Services are encouraged to hold a dream for their future and to reach for it . The Enrich-ment Program helps to open the doors of opportunity for these children, youth and young adults to attain their full potential . Examples include:

• Participation in a Financial Literacy Program geared to this vulnerable group

• Accessing a Holiday Dinner with fellow youth in care also living without family

• Entrance fees to a competitive, qualifying event • Upgrading a musical instrument

Our PeopleThe Guelph Chamber Choir was founded in 1980 to foster the develop-ment and appreciation of choral music in Guelph and the surrounding area . Consisting of highly talented mostly amateur singers from a wide

range of occupations, the choir is proudly presenting its 35th season this year with four concerts . Its repertoire ranges from Renaissance masters to newly commissioned works, from classical styles to Broadway and vocal jazz, and from masterworks for choir and orchestra to choral gems for unaccompanied voices .

In addition to its regular series of concerts, the GCC has performed in numerous festivals, including the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales (3rd place winner in the Mixed Choir Category), Luminato Festival, Toronto International Choral Festival, Guelph Spring Festival, Elora Festival, and festivals in Salzburg, Austria, and the Czech Republic . Exciting collabora-tions include working with Dancetheatre David Earle, professional choirs, regional choirs, community choirs, and orchestras such as the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and Orchestra London . Some of our most engaging concerts have been accompanied by period instrument specialists from Toronto and southern Ontario .

The GCC has performed in England, Wales, Ireland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Holland, Germany, Sweden and Denmark, has been broadcast on CBC Radio, and has won prizes in the CBC National Competition for Amateur Choirs . Recordings include Noel, On Christmas Night; Songs of the New World; Good Cheare: Christmas Celebrations Old and New (with the Oliver Whitehead Jazz Ensemble), Christmas in the Royal City, and Remember .

Gerald Neufeld has been conductor of the Guelph Chamber Choir since its founding . He holds the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa and is presently a pro-fessor in the Don Wright Faculty of Music, Western University, where he conducts choirs and teaches choral conducting . Previously, he taught in the music department of the University of Guelph and conducted the University of Guelph Choir with which he toured in Britain and Europe on two occasions . Under his direction, the Guelph Chamber Choir, the University of Guelph Choir, the Faculty of Music Singers, and the Thames Scholars from Western University all have won prizes in the CBC National Competition for Amateur Choirs .

Gerald Neufeld is a previous winner of the Leslie Bell competition for choral conduc-tors . He has served on juries for the Canadian recording industry’s Juno Awards, the Leslie Bell Competition and the Guelph Spring Festival national vocal competition . He is active as a choral clinician, festival adjudicator, and lecturer on topics of special interest in the choral field.

Alison MacNeill is a graduate of the University of Guelph music program, and of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto . Born in Guelph, she returned to the area to live and work fol-lowing graduate work at the University of Western Ontario, where she had studied piano and theory with Ronald Turini and Richard Parks .

Alison is active as an accompanist and chamber musician, and has been, at various times through the years, pianist for the University of Guelph Choir, the Elora Festival Singers, the Guelph Youth Singers, and the Rainbow Chorus of Waterloo-Wellington, as well as with many other ensembles and soloists .

She maintains a large teaching studio and is the Director of Music Ministry at Harcourt Memorial United Church . She has been the accompanist for the Chamber Choir for much of its existence, performing and touring with the ensemble .
