Text: Package of photocopies available at the bookstore. You need to bring the appropriate handout to every lab and

field trip. “Rowland” refers to Structural Analysis and Synthesis by S. Rowland and E.M. Duebendorfer.

Grades: (40% of the total class grade) 12 labs + 3 field trips= All weighted equally

Attendance: Required. Many of the labs are difficult or impossible to make-up after the fact. Attendance to the field

trip is also required. Arrange your schedule now to make sure you are free!

Structural geology is a field-based, hands-on discipline. You will find that much of the learning in this class will take

place in the lab and during the field trips. For that reason, the laboratory portion is an integral part of the

course.

Each lab will be due at the beginning of the following lab session. Late labs are not acceptable. Partial credit will

only be given if the lab is turned in on time. If you are having trouble finishing the labs, talk to your TA.

Don't wait to the end of the semester. Because the Lab is such a large portion of the grade it can have

severe consequences if you don't turn in all the exercises.

You will need the following items at some point during the semester. Bring them to every lab:

Geologist's compass with inclinometer and declination adjustment: You will need one for

Field Camp. Make sure it is an azimuth compass (0 to 360).

www.forestry-suppliers.com item#37036 Silva Ranger CL15 Azimuth (0-360°)

$46 (or equivalent). An iphone app also will work such as Lambert or Field Move Clino

Field Notebook- You will also need it for Field Camp. www.forestry-suppliers.com

item#49352 FB842 – 50% rag paper, ($8) is fine.

Clipboard for field trips (get one with a small metal clip and a plastic cover if possible)

Ruler

Straight-edge

Small Protractor

Scissors

Calculator with trig functions

Hard Colored pencils (Cheap, hard Crayola Pencils work well)

Tracing paper

2 good quality Mechanical Pencils with 0.5mm HB lead. Pentel pencils are good.

Scotch tape

Black ink drafting pen or extra-fine point Sharpie
