1. SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS
One trench totalling 10.0 m in length was blasted
out across a gold occurrence located during Canadian
Occidental's 1981 summer program in the Sandy Lake Belt.
The rocks exposed in the trenches include: iron
formation and diabase. Gold values were at or below the
5 ppb detection limit.
The trench was chip sampled at a 0.25 m interval.
All samples were analyzed for gold, silver and arsenic.
Forty samples were collected. The results were disappointing.
Due to budgetary cutbacks and the low potential for
gold mineralization on these claims it is recommended that no
further work be done and the claims allowed to lapse.

2. INTRODUCTION
The Sandy 'C' Claims are one of a group of claim
blocks staked in 1981 to cover known areas of iron formation
outcrop on the Sandy Lake Greenstone Belt. The original 'C 1
block was allowed to lapse except for 12 claims in two separate
blocks. This report deals with the western block of four
contiguous claims which are presently held by Canadian
Occidental Petroleum Ltd. of 180 Attwell Drive, 4th Floor,
Rexdale, Ontario, M9W 6A9.
The trench was blasted out across areas where a
high gold value was discovered during the 1981 Canadian
Occidental field mapping program in the Sandy Lake Belt. The
purpose of the trench was to investigate the showings
potential for economic gold mineralization.
This report presents the results of the trenching
work and is submitted on behalf of Canadian Occidental
Petroleum Ltd., the holders of the claims.
2.1 Location and Access
The Sandy 'C 1 claims are located on the north shore
of Sandy Lake 225 km north of Red Lake in northwestern Ontario
(N.T.S. map sheet 53/F/2). The 'C 1 claims are in the Red Lake
Mining Division of the Patricia Portion of the District of
Kenora {see Figures l and 2).
The native settlement of Sandy Lake is located 25 km
west of the claims. There are bi-weekly scheduled flights
from Winnipeg to Sandy Lake by Air-Dale as well as scheduled
flights from Thunder Bay and Pickle Lake.

Canadian Occidental chartered a float equipped
Beaver from Green Airways in Red Lake for transportation to
the work area from a base camp 2 km east of the claims.
Highway 808, a new all weather road from Pickle Lake
to Windigo Lake comes within 50 miles of the properties to the
southeast. Winter haulage roads have been used in the past to
transport heavy equipment and supplies into the area.
Getty Mines Ltd. is presently undertaking development
work at the old Favourable Lake Mine 32 km southwest of the
claims. I f the mine is brought into production there is a
possibility that an all weather road will be extended into the
area and provide direct road transportation to the south (see
Figure 1).
2.2 Previous Work
During the late 1930's and early 1940's, the Sandy
Lake Greenstone Belt was prospected for gold, however there
are no reported gold occurrences on the Sandy 'C 1 Claims.
In the summer of 1981, Canadian Occidental carried
out a shoreline mapping program of their Sandy Lake claim groups
including the 'C' claims. The results of this program are
contained in an internal Canadian Occidental report entitled
"Geology and Geochemistry of the Sandy Claims, Sandy Lake Belt,
Northwestern Ontario, March 1982".

Copco and a Wacker. The four-man crew spent 2 part days
on October 8 and 9th, 1982, drilling, blasting, mucking,
mapping and sampling the trench.
3.2 Sampling and Analyses
A total of 40 channel chip samples were collected.
The sample interval was 0.25 m. All samples were analysed for
gold, silver and arsenic. Two samples were also analysed for
Ni, Cu, Co and Zn. Two samples have whole rock analyses.
Analyses were done in Ottawa by Bondar-Clegg Ltd. The elements
analysed, methods used and the lower detection limits are
listed in Table 1. Analytical results are shown graphically
on Plan 2 and 5, and listed by sample number in Appendix I.

3.3 Petrographic Analysis
A total of 3 rock specimens were thin sectioned by
Geoplastech in Toronto and sent to Dr. S. Boutcher of St. Vital,
Manitoba for petrographic analyses. Her reports are in
Appendix II.
3.4 Magnetic Susceptibility Survey *
A magnetic susceptibility survey was conducted along
the trench. Readings were taken on 0.25 m intervals. The
survey was undertaken to determine the actual magnetic strength
of the various rock types. These observations will be used in
the future by enabling a comparison between the actual magnetic
properties of known rock types to the data received from the
ground magnetic survey. The results of this comparison will
aid in the interpretation of magnetic units not exposed and
provide a better understanding of the distribution of iron
formations underlying the claim block.
The instrument used was a Scintrex SM-5. Results
of the surveys are shown graphically on Plan 2.
4. GEOLOGY
4.l General Geology
This belt was first mapped in 1938 at a scale of
l inch to l mile (1:63,360) by Satterly (1938), and was later
included in a regional, l inch to 2 mile reconnaissance survey
(Bennett and Riley, Operation Lingman Lake 1969). Data collected
during the Bennett et al. (1969) survey was insufficient to
modify Satterly's interpretation. As a result, the author has
relied heavily on the work of Satterly.
- 8 -
"The underlying bedrock of the area is entirely
Precambrian in age. Throughout the region a heavy drift-mantle
of Pleistocene age overlies the bedrock with a maximum thickness
of 50 feet. Much of the drift is varved clay laid down in a
post-glacial lake; towards the east end of Sandy Lake, the
drift consists of sand and boulders as well as clay.
The Sandy Lake Belt is about 50 miles long and has a
maximum width of about 10 to 15 miles. Mafic to intermediate
volcanics which have undergone metamorphism to greenschist and
almandine amphibolite facies make up 80 to 90S; of the belt.
The remainder of the belt is felsic to intermediate metavolcanics,
metasediments, and metagabbro" (the above excerpt taken from
Satterly, 1938) .
4.2 Geology of the Sandy 'C - Western Block' Claims
The Sandy 'C' Claims were mapped by Kevin Leonard
of Canadian Occidental in July 1981. The map produced is
included in this report as Plan l with the location of the
1982 trenches, which have been added.
The three main rock types are mafic metavolcanics,
iron formation and diabase dykes or sills. Iron formation outcrops
are located along the shoreline, which in this claim block is
generally north-south. The strike of the bedding in the iron
formation is east-north-east (see Plan 1). Amphibolized diabase
(symbol Id on Plan 1) is the dominant rock type and is commonly
found enclosing the iron formation (see Plan 2). The percentage
of diabase in this claim block is higher than the other claim
blocks investigated.
- 9 -
There does not appear to be a major structural break
or major folding in the area of the western block of the 'C 1
Claims.
TABLE 2
TABLE OF ROCK UNITS
Age Name Description
Archean Diabase Massive, medium to fine grained anddark green in colour, composed of uralitic amphibole and plagioclase laths, well developed ophitic texture.
Iron Formation Alternating bands of quartz anhedraand magnetite giving a corregated appearance on weathered surface. Very finely laminated, very fine grained and slightly metamorphosed. Actinolite commonly associated with magnetite rich layers.
4.3 Geology of Trench SAN 82-OT4 (Plan 2)
This trench was blasted across an outcrop of diabase
and iron formation, A grab sample of iron formation collected
in 1981, from this outcrop contains 2100 ppb gold {see Plan 1).
The trench is 10.0 m long and is only a few feet above the
water line of Sandy Lake.
The trench exposed two segments of iron formation
separated and enclosed by diabase. The iron formation could
be followed for 5 m along strike before it was covered by drift
or the waters of Sandy Lake. Because of this short strike
length it is impossible to determine whether the iron formations
are country rock slices which were rafted into the intrusion or
sills intruded along the bedding planes of the iron formation.
The iron formation which occurs from 1.0 to 1.75 m in the trench
has been sheared. This shear extends into the diabase and
- 10 -
*
therefore post dates the intrusion. Neither the shear or the calcite vein at 3.0 m contain anomalous levels of gold.In her petrographic reports (Appendix II) Dr. Boutcher describes the diabase as pervasively uralitised and unsheared. The plagioclase from sample 82-SAN-2109 is relatively fresh while only remnant plagioclase remains in sample 82-SAN-2140. The sample of iron formation analyzed (82-SAN-2129) is slightly metamorphosed, actinolite rich and cut by carbonate filled fractures.
The high gold value obtained in 1981 was not repeated and the gold level was at or below the detection limit of 5 ppb. 4.4 Rock Geochemistry
The trench was sampled continuously at a 0.25 m interval. All samples were analysed for gold/ silver and arsenic.
Two samples of diabase was analysed for Ni, Cu, Zn, Co and semi-quantitative whole rock analyses. The nickel , copper, zinc and cobalt levels in the diabase are non-anomalous and both samples appear chemically similar (see Appendix I).The gold, silver and arsenic values of the samples are uniformly low. No difference can be seen in the trace element distribution between the diabase and the iron formation (see Plan 2).
The very low gold values across the iron formation indicates a low gold potential for the area tested. The source of the 2100 ppb gold anomaly found in 1981 remains unknown.
- 11 -
5, CONCLUSIONS
The source of the 1981 anomalous gold value of
2100 ppb was not discovered. The gold, silver and arsenic
geochemical values from samples collected in the trench were
consistently low.
Since the only anomalous gold value obtained on
the claim to date could not be duplicated, it must be
assumed that the claims offer a low potential for iron
formation hosted gold deposits.
No further work is suggested. The claims should be
allowed to lapse.
Respectfully submitted,
Toronto, Ontario F.W. Gittings, Hon. B.Se.

THIN SECTION DESCRIPTIONS
- 18 -
Specimen No. - 82-SAN-2109
Rock^name - amphibolitised diabase
Mineralogy - very abundant - uralitic amphibole abundant - plagioclase small amounts - magnetite
sericite clinozoisite
Descriptipn - This rock is a medium grained, non-porphyritic, diabase with an ophitic texture i in which the original feldspar remains virtually fresh. In contrast, all of the original ferromagnesian material has now been replaced by uralitic amphibole. Some fine grained magnetite is rather patchily distributed through the amphibole.
The plagioclase of the original rock remains virtually unaffected by the alteration, and clearly retains the texture of the diabase. The plagioclase forms randomly oriented, lath shaped, crystals which vary in size but average around l mm in length by about 0.1 mm in width. These are marginally penetrated by uralitic fibresi as well as containing scattered inclusions of uralite and being cut across by uralite- filled cracks. Apart from this, the plagioclase is essentially fresh. Occasional crystals contain a few tiny inclusions of sericite and/or clinozoisite. Many of the crystals show some compositional zoning. In general they have a composition around intermediate labradorite. Plagioclase probably made up around bQfo o f the original rock.
The remainder of the rock, surrounding the plagioclase laths, is made up almost entirely of uralitic amphibole. This has a fairly deep green colour, and often forms areas of almost simultaneous extinction up to about 2 mm across, which ophitically enclose plagioclase laths. These presumably represent original sites of ophitic pyroxene crystals. The spaces between these areas of optically continuous uralite is filled by patches of extremely fine grained and finely matted fibrous uralite.
The only other mineral identified in this rock was magnetite. This occurs as tiny granules which are scattered rather unevenly through the uralitic amphibole i and also in rather diffuse aggregates of tiny grains which are often around 0.25 ram across. These may represent the sites of original iron oxide crystals. They also tend to be located within areas of uralite.

Specimen No. - 82-SAN-2129
Rock^ame - slightly metamorphosed, actinolite rich, bandediron formation, cut by carbonate filled fractures
Mineralogy - abundant - magnetiteactinolite carbonate
moderate amounts - epidotequartz
small amounts - pyrite
Description - This is a banded, and finely laminated, magnetiterich iron formation which has been subjected to low grademetamorphism. Apart from magnetite, the main constituentof the rock is an actinolitic amphibole, which is intermingledwith subsidiary amounts of epidote in some laminae andquartz in others. The rock is cut by numerous minor fractures, mostly oriented at right angles to the bedding. The thinsection also includes a band of carbonate, parallel to the bedding, with branching fractures coming off it. This is most probablyof late stage introduction, rather than of sedimentary origin.
This rock is very finely laminated, with laminae often being as narrow as 0.05 mm thick. The main rock constituents are magnetite and actinolitic amphibole, and the laminae essentially reflect differences in the relative proportions of these minerals which are present. These proportions range from virtually monomineralic magnetite bands to virtually monomineralic actinolitic bands, with all stages in between being represented. The magnetite forms tiny compact granules of variable size. The actinolite forms a matted mass of randomly oriented, shreddy looking, anhedra which is also typically very fine grained (usually less than 0.1 mm). Over much of the actinolite rich portion of the rock there is a low to moderate amount of finely granular epidote intimately intermingled with the actinolite. Towards one side of the thin section..variable amounts of extremely fine grained quartz anhedra are intermingled with the actinolite and magnetite, instead of the epidote. The proportion of quartz present also varies from lamina to lamina.
As mentioned above, the thin section contains a band of carbonate. This is about 6 mm wide, and runs parallel to the lamination of the rock. However its relations within the hand specimen suggest that it was probably introduced after deposition of the surrounding rock. The carbonate within this band forms a relatively coarse grained mosaic which contains occasional tiny, scattered, crystals of actinolite and magnetite. The margins of this band are rather irregular. A scattering of small irregular masses of pyrite runs along

one side of this carbonate band.
The thin section is .cut by a number of minor fractures, some of which offset laminae slightly and most of which are roughly at right angles to the bedding. The two widest lead off from the carbonate band, are of the order of 2-3 mm wide ( and are also filled by relatively coarse grained carbonate mosaic. The other fractures are usually less than 0.1 mm wide, and are filled either by carbonate or by a mass of very fine grained actinolite with very little magnetite associated with it.

Specimen No. - 82-SAN-2140
Bock name - pervasively uralitised diabase, with well developed ophitic texture
Mineralogy - very abundant - uralitic amphibole abundant - remnant plagioclasesmall amounts - sericite
chlorite epidote magnetite pyrite
Description - This rock is an altered diabase. The rock is undsheared, and the original texture has been clearly pseudomorphed. The original rock appears to have consisted of approximately equal proportions of ferromagnesian material (probably pyroxene) and plagioclase. The ferromagnesian mineral formed roughly equidimensional crystals of very regular size (about 1.5 mm) which were evenly distributed throughout the rock. They contained very abundant, relatively smalli ophitic inclusions of plagioclase laths with an average length of about 0.25 mm. The spaces between the pyroxene crystals are also filled by plagioclase crystals, of less well defined shape in most cases.
The original pyroxene crystals have now been completely pseudomorphed by a fairly deep green uralitic amphibole. In most cases the amphibole is virtually optically continuous over an individual pseudomorph, although it usually has a somewhat shreddy appearance in detail. The associated plagioclase is somewhat shadowily visible as it has been partly obscured by marginal penetration by adjoining uralite crystals, along with scattered tiny inclusions of sericite chlorite and uralite. A low proportion of scattered, irregularily shaped, magnetite is usually associated with the amphibole. The thin section also contains scattered, compact, anhedra of pyrite often of the order of 0.5 mm in grain size. These are often assocaited with small clots of chlorite, and a few granular anhedra of epidote.
At one corner the thin section is cut across by a number of branching , rather diffuse, yeinlets filled by very finely granular clinozoisite intermingled with a little patchy chlorite and some shadowy feldspathic material.

Dear Sir:
Enclosed are two copies of a Notice of Intent with statements listing a reduced rate of assessment work credits to be allowed for a technical survey. Please forward one copy to the recorded holder of the claims and retain the other. In approximately fifteen days from the above date, a final letter of approval of these credits will be sent to you. On receipt of the approval letter, you may then change the work entries on the claim record sheets.
For further information, if required, please contact Mr. F.W. Matthews at 416/965-1380.

An examination of your survey report indicates that the requirements of The Ontario Mining Act have not been fully met to warrant maximum assessment work credits. This notice is merely a warning that you will not be allowed the number of assessment work days credits that you expected and also that in approximately 15 days from the above date, the mining recorder will be authorized to change the entries on his record sheets to agree with the enclosed statement. Please note that until such time as the recorder actually changes the entry on the record sheet, the status of the claim remains unchanged.
If you are of the opinion that these changes by the mining recorder will jeopardize your claims, you may during the next fifteen days apply to the Mining and Lands Commissioner for an extension of time. Abstracts should be sent with your application.
If the reduced rate of credits does not jeopardize the status of the claims then you need not seek relief from the Mining and Lands Commissioner and this Notice of Intent may be disregarded.
If your survey was submitted and assessed under the "Special Provision-Performance and Coverage" method and you are of the opinion that a re-appraisal under the "Man-days" method would result in the approval of a greater number of days credit per claim, you may, within the said fifteen day period, submit assessment work breakdowns listing the employees names, addresses and the dates and hours they worked. The new work breakdowns should be submitted direct to the Lands Management Branch, Toronto. The report will be re-assessed and a new statement of credits based on actual days worked will be issued.
