Luke 20:1-8(ESV)

1 One day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up 2 and said to him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.” authority.” 3 He answered them, “I also will ask you a question. Now tell me, 4 was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?” 5 And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘From man,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” 7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 8 And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Luke 20:9-16a(ESV)

9 And he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and let it out to tenants and went into another country for a long while. 10 When the time came, he sent a servant to the tenants, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 And he sent another servant. But they also beat and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he sent yet a third. This one also they wounded and cast out. 13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ 14 But when the tenants saw him, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’  15 And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.”

When they heard this, they said, “Surely not!” 17 But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written:

“‘The stone that the builders rejected    has become the cornerstone’?18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”

19 The scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, for they perceived that he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.

Luke 19:45-48(ESV)

45 And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”47 And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, 48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.

THE PATIENT VINTNER Exodus 34:5-7 5 The LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6 The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

Page 17: Geography of the soul knowing God, knowing ourselves

THE PATIENT VINTNER2 Chronicles 36:14-1614 All the officers of the priests and the people likewise were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations. And they polluted the house of the LORD that he had made holy in Jerusalem.

15 The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. 16 But they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words and scoffing at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD rose against his people, until there was no remedy.

Page 18: Geography of the soul knowing God, knowing ourselves

THE PATIENT VINTNER 2 Peter3:8-9 8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

THE BELOVED SON OF THE VINTNERHebrews 13:11-1211 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. 12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.

THE BELOVED SON OF THE VINTNERPsalm 2:1-41 Why do the nations rage    and the peoples plot in vain?2 The kings of the earth set themselves,    and the rulers take counsel together,    against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying,3 “Let us burst their bonds apart    and cast away their cords from us.”4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;    the Lord holds them in derision.

Page 22: Geography of the soul knowing God, knowing ourselves

THE BELOVED SON OF THE VINTNERPsalm 2:5-95 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,    and terrify them in his fury, saying,6 “As for me, I have set my King    on Zion, my holy hill.”7 I will tell of the decree:The LORD said to me, “You are my Son;    today I have begotten you.8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,    and the ends of the earth your possession.9 You shall break them with a rod of iron    and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”

THE BELOVED SON OF THE VINTNERPsalm 2:10-1210 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;    be warned, O rulers of the earth.11 Serve the LORD with fear,    and rejoice with trembling.12 Kiss the Son,    lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,    for his wrath is quickly kindled.Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Romans 8:14-1714 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

THE POWERFUL VINTNER…the long standing Christian heritage which began as a revolution, has paradoxically enough led to the Westerner taking God for granted. He is someone whose ways are known, whose reactions can be gauged, who will do the decent thing and see that justice and goodness will triumph. He can therefore be safely ignored. Yet the New Testament is solely concerned with trying to convey something explosive about a living God. (emphasis added)
