PRACTICAL 3: GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this test is to determine the relatives proportions of different granular sizes as they are passing through certain sieve sizes. Thus the percentage of sand, gravel silt, and clay can be obtained from the sieve analysis test.
APPARATUS:
APPARATUS EXPLANATION
Sieve,a bottom pan and a cover
-we use this to cover the mortar out from the pan
A scale sensitive up to 0.1g
-we use this to scale the mortar that is sensitive up to 0.1g or not
-we use this in this experiment to mae an analysis of grain sized
Mortar and rubber tipped pestle
Mechanical shieve shaker
-we use this to shaker the mortar inside the sieves
PROCEDURE:
1.Firstly,we must write down the weight of each sieves as well as the bottom pan to to be used in the analysis.
2.Second,record the weight of the given dry soil sample
3.Befor that make sure that all the sieves are clean and asemble them in the ascending order of sieves number
4.After that place the sieve stack in the mechanical shaker and shake it for 5 minutes.
5.Lastly, removed the stack from the shaker and carefully weigh and record the weight of each sieve with its retained soil. Remember to weigh and record the weight of the bottom pan with its retained fine soil.
