added drilling efciency and safety
Understanding pore pressure and wellbore stability issues is essential to safe, efcient and
cost-effective drilling. Weatherford’s GeoPressure Consulting (GPC) services leverage the
knowledge and experience of leading professionals in the eld with advanced analysis and
prediction techniques. By assimilating, analyzing and interpreting mass volumes of data, our
GPC consultants not only provide a real-time overview of the current geopressure situation, they also enable well teams to “look ahead” at what pressure regimes will be like hundreds of
meters below the present drilling position. As a result, we have compiled an enviable success
rate of helping our clients meet drilling and geological targets while signicantly reducing risk,
nonproductive time (NPT) and related costs.
The GPC team helped a client reach the nal electric logging point 12 days ahead of scheduleand saved a casing string on an exploration well.

through expert geopressure consulting.
GPC: Experience the benets
Geopressure problems cost the E&P industry billions
of dollars each year. Clients of Weatherford’s GPC
services benet from lower cost, reduced risk and
greater drilling productivity, thanks to our accurate
pore pressure proling and our ability to quantify
the effects of geopressure-related factors during
the construction phase of a wellbore.

with the r
During the well planning phase, GPC consultants
perform a predrilling assessment to predict
a well’s pore pressure and highlight potential
drilling hazards. Using real-time data, they
continually rene the predrill prognosis to conrm
the pressure point during drilling operations.
Once drilling is complete, the nal well report
includes geopressure curves generated for
the entire logged section of the well to improve
drilling efciency on subsequent wells.
With the right information delivered at the
right time, well teams can make and
implement performance-enhancing and
risk-reducing decisions.
Weatherford’s experienced geopressure
consultants are available 24/7/365 to
ensure timely dissemination of accurate
pore pressure proles that can help
well teams meet drilling and geological
targets quickly and safely.
Weatherford’s GPC consultants provide an array of
services before, during and after drilling to predict and
manage pore pressure. These services include assisting
in the selection of drilling mud, advising on measures
to remediate abnormally high pore pressure, identifyingfractures and advising on casing points.
Predict
Predrill pore pressure models are developed, based on
seismic information and data from offset wells.
Evaluate
GPC consultants closely monitor pore pressur
logging-while-drilling (LWD) resistivity data acq
while drilling and correlate the real-time data w
the predrill model.

formation at the right time.
Qualitative techniques
Working solely with quantitative data does not provide a complete picture of the pore-pressure
regime. Qualitative data such as gas-mud weight-rate of penetration (ROP) relationship,
produced gases, gas scenarios, temperature, cavings, lithology, geopressure proles, torque,
drag and ll are necessary to constrain normal compaction trend line drawings. By applying
proprietary, software-enabled measurement criteria to some of these qualitative data and
relationships, the GPC group has developed semi-quantitative techniques that make it
easier to cross-check the output from the qualitative side of pore pressure analysis.
Weatherford’s methodology leverages the cumulative knowledge and expertise of our
consultants’ years of experience to make our predictions accurate and replicable.
Additionally, most quantitative techniques are limited to normal faults and extensional
regimes which are likely to underestimate pore pressure in many of the world’s mostpromising basins. Weatherford’s GPC service integrates qualitative techniques to extend
the benets of geopressure prediction and determination to these basins.
Adjust
Using downhole and real-time data, GPC
consultants continually rene the pressure
prole to reduce uncertainty and enable
drillers to better control mud weights, dene
casing points and improve overall drilling
efciency and safety. The goal is to reduce
uncertainty, not only at the current depth,
but also ahead of the bit.
Advance
Continually predicting, evaluating and adjusting the pore pressure
prole to successfully manage pore pressure—throughout the well
construction process and from well to well—enables wells to be
drilled more safely and efciently, boreholes to be placed more
accurately, and reservoir contents to be evaluated and managed
for maximum oil and gas recovery.
The benets continue after drilling. Understanding pressures in
the reservoir ultimately impacts production and payout. Reservoir
engineers use pore pressure measurements gathered by GPC
consultants to identify and type uids, dene uid contacts and
assess reservoir continuity.
Drilling efciency and safety are continuously improved through continuous GPC pore pressure management, which integratespredrill, while-drilling and after-drilling knowledge and understanding of geopressure situations from one well to the next.
Quantitative analysis
Weatherford’s GPC services use
conventional quantitative techniques
to analyze geopressures prior to and
during drilling. Our GPC software
gathers drilling exponent corrected,
resistivity, sonic/interval velocity,
density and shale density data. We
apply industry-recognized methods
to analyze and model the data prior
to drilling. Similarly, our consultants
derive look-ahead pore and fracturepressure curves during drilling by
modifying the predrill model.

Weatherford’s GPC services have proven effective in more than 100 wells throughout the world.
GPC clients are repeat clients, because they realize the benets that accrue from dramatically
improved drilling efciency and a signicant reduction in safety and environmental risks.

For an operator in the remote jungles of northeast
India, gathering complete and accurate pore pressure
data was essential to successfully drilling a well
where others had suffered a series of blowouts
and losses. The advice of the Weatherford GPC
consultant enabled the operator to modify the casing
plan in time to eliminate a 13 3/8-in. casing string
saving US$0.5 million.
GPC consultants correctly identied and overcame wellbore breathing incidents in a high-pressure/high-temperature
(HP/HT) well where previous kicks and ballooning had led to signicant NPT. The GPC consultants prevented a kick
in the pore pressure ramp and recommended a smaller bottomhole assembly (BHA), which enabled the operator tosuccessfully drill the HP/HT well with signicantly reduced NPT.
Pore pressure prole of the well showing produced gases at
the right with the higher produced gases indicating the zone
of severe ballooning.
Close up of the ballooning zone. Equivalent circulation
density and produced gases were dramatically reduced and
ballooning was mitigated when the BHA was changed per
GPC team recommendation.
India: Saving a casing string
Weatherford’s GeoPressure Consulting services enable
operators to obtain a realistic overview of geopressure
situations in real time. With this information, informeddecisions can be made in time to avoid costly problems
that can otherwise increase nonproductive drilling time
and compromise future production.
