    Course Overview

Geomechanics covers the basics of the deformation of materials under stress, strain and shear based on the theories of elasticity and failure. From this basis the course offers two paths. One covers the application of theory to practical drilling problems and the avoidance of hole collapse and/or formation breakdown while drilling.

The other covers the petrophysical measurements needed to predict formation stress magnitude anddirection, anisotropy and the preferred direction for extended reach laterals. Since many of the inputparameters can be derived from core analysis the course wraps up with a full day on modern special core analysis covering unconventional core samples.

Richard has a worldwide balanced experience with major oil company upstream operations (Amoco International - now BP), with large independents (Bridas / Pan American Energy and CGC) and with oil and gas industry Consulting, Research, and Service sectors (Schlumberger, Halliburton & Gaffney, Cline & Associates) and with Academia. Demonstrated professionalism in consulting, management, petroleum economics, teaching and executive energy roles. Career includes P&L responsibilities, optimization of producing property operations, reserve evaluations and certifications, people motivation, total quality management implementation and inter-company mergers. Skills include technology transfer and training at technical and managerial levels. Foreign language abilities accompany expat experiences in South America, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Pacific Rim.

He is an active member of SPWLA, SPE, and SCA; SPWLA Distinguished Speaker & Past Director, and author of numerous patents, technical & management publications and four books.
