Welcome to beautiful Geneva, New York! Located in Ontario County in central New York, the city

of Geneva offers residents and visitors a scenic setting on Seneca Lake in the heart

of the Finger Lakes. Geneva’s rich his-tory traces its beginnings from the Seneca Native American village of Kanadasaga. The village became a strongpoint after it was fortified by the British against the

French and later against the Americans. After destruction by the Sullivan Expedition in 1779, it was abandoned but was later resettled by Europeans in the 1790s. The community was first incorporated in 1806.

With a 2006 estimated pop-ulation of 13,367, Geneva offers a strong economic climate, from successful family-owned farms, to world-famous wineries, to international corporations. Known as the “Lake Trout Capital of the World,” Geneva offers an idyllic location for outdoor recre-ation and tourism.

located in the heart of central New York’s Finger Lakes region, Geneva enjoys a unique geographic advantage that is con-

ducive to the needs of residents and busi-nesses. At the junction of Routes 5/20 and 14, Geneva is directly south of NYS Thruway Exit 42. State Routes 14 and 96 connect Geneva to neighboring communities, while U.S. Route 20 and Interstate 90 extend Geneva’s reach even further.

Geneva is located within an hour’s drive of Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca. Together, these three cities house an important cluster of edu-cational, technological, scientific, and cultural

resources. Geneva is also located within two to three hours of Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Elmira, Scranton, Toronto, and Utica, and within five to six hours of Cleveland, New York City, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Providence.

More than half of the population of the United States and Canada is located within a 10-hour drive of Geneva. In fact, within an 800-mile radius of Geneva, companies have access to more than half of all businesses and wholesalers in the United States and to more than half of all manufacturing and retail facili-ties in both the United States and Canada.

Come home to the small town of Geneva. Residents here enjoy small-city living with little traffic and famil-

iar, friendly faces. Even with its local charm, Hobart and William Smith Colleges keep the community in touch with the academic world, and big-city amenities are never very far away.

At any given time, more than 100 homes are on the market in Geneva, with a median sale price of around $100,000. For that reasonable cost, a potential homeowner can purchase a lovely 1,800-square-foot Colonial with three bedrooms and two baths. A wide variety of homes are avail-able, including historic homes, lakeside cottages, turn-of-the-century farmhouses, postwar starter homes, and new construc-tion. Home prices vary greatly, from as little as $40,000 to more than $2 million, but the cost of home ownership is relatively low in Geneva.

The variety of available home styles reflect the community’s more than 200-year history. The South Main Street – Pultney Park Historic District area boasts

several Greek revival-style mansions. Many of these homes have been carefully pre-served through the diligence of the Geneva Historical Society, which is committed to preserving and interpreting the rich cul-ture and heritage of the diverse citizens who have made Geneva the city it is today. Over the years, the society’s Fund for Historic Geneva has supported many preservation projects, along with the restoration of the Prouty-Chew House, Rose Hill Mansion, and John Johnston House.

The historic downtown consists of many two-story homes — many that are more than 100 years old — with wide front porches, hardwood floors, and full base-ments. A number of larger homes in the area have been converted into multi-family residences. Away from the downtown area, the homes feature larger properties on gen-erous lots with spacious lawns. First-time and budget-minded home buyers find many affordable options, such as small starter homes and modern manufactured homes.

Lower-income residents can receive assistance through the Geneva Housing Authority, which works to improve the qual-ity of life for the Geneva community and surrounding areas by administering public

and private housing assistance programs; promoting the development of affordable, decent, and safe housing opportunities; and encouraging economic self-sufficiency.

All in all, Geneva is a wonderful place to call home. With a picturesque setting on Seneca Lake affording a secluded small-town feel, Geneva offers a wonderful library, educational opportunities, department store shopping, and a high-end grocery store. And if big-city amenities are what you crave, you can find those less than an hour away in Syracuse and Rochester.

The city of Geneva has many benefits to offer potential businesses. Its prime location within a few minutes of the

NYS Thruway and several other east–west and north–south routes makes it easily accessible. Geneva is also located nearly equidistant to three larger cities — Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca — all of which are less than an hour away. These cities offer an impressive cluster of technological, scientific, educational, recre-ational, and cultural resources to support and enhance area businesses.

Geneva is also located in a designated New York State Empire Zone. The Empire Zone program was created to stimulate economic growth through a variety of state tax incentives designed to attract new businesses to New York and to enable existing businesses to expand and create more jobs.

Through the Department of Economic Development and Planning, the city’s unique one-stop strategy for business assistance is a timesaver for those who are considering the startup or expansion of a business. According to Director Valerie Bassett, the department pro-vides low-interest loans, Empire Zone incen-tives, business counseling, and code compli-ance. “This eliminates the aggravation of going to numerous offices,” she explains. “It’s all right here, and it’s our goal to be as helpful as possible. In several cases, it’s been the difference between a decision to locate here or elsewhere.”

According to Bassett, the department also takes the lead in applying for grants for busi-ness assistance, façade programs, public infra-structure, and housing programs. “We have been very successful most recently with several downtown improvement programs, which have truly changed the face of downtown, including façade improvements, demolition of neglected buildings, clean-up of hazardous sites, and placement of a new public park.”

The Geneva Industrial Development Authority (IDA) is a seven-member nonprofit agency working to create new jobs and expand the tax base of Geneva. The IDA provides

industrial bond financing for taxable and tax-ex-empt eligible projects, as well as bond assistance for a number of nonprofit facilities for hospitals, colleges, and senior housing. Substantial prop-erty tax abatements and sales tax avoidance are available for eligible projects. The IDA owns and manages several industrial real estate sites, including the Geneva Enterprise Development Center industrial incubator and the Geneva Industrial Park. The IDA maintains partnerships with the city of Geneva, Ontario County, the NYS Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva Growth, and Jobs for Geneva, all of which offer a range of business assistance programs and development services.

Agriculture has played a key role in making Geneva the center of prosperity it is today. As an integral part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva works to “advance a sustainable agri-culture and food system through innovative research, education, and extension programs that improve human health, protect the envi-ronment, and support economic development to address state and global needs.”

Established in 1880 and operative in 1882, the New York Agricultural Experiment Station is the sixth-oldest such station in the United States. It houses four academic units: Entomology, Food Science and Technology, Horticultural Sciences, and Plant Pathology. More than 275 employees — including profes-sors and scientists in residence — work at the 914-acre campus.

Among its many accomplishments, the sta-tion has developed and selected new crop varieties, such as orange cauliflower, two new cherries, and six new plums. In addition, the station develops value-added products and processes, including its work to improve the shelf life and consistency of maple cream. The station has developed apple rootstocks that show strong resistance to harsh winter conditions, and they have made it possible for onion seeds to be protected by film coating.

Researchers in Geneva have developed a safer, easier-to-use pesticide for snap beans, and they have improved sweet cherry production by increasing yield, fruit quality, and profitability. The New York State Agricultural Experiment Station is a leader in sustaining healthy crops against the demands of disease and pestilence. In addition, the station fosters economic growth by enhancing rural development and discovers fundamental knowledge through cutting-edge research techniques.

In November 2005, the Cornell Agriculture and Food Technology Park welcomed the first tenants of its 20,000-square-foot “flexible tech-nology building.” Known as the Technology Farm, the park fosters the creation of innovative breakthrough technologies on a 72-acre campus adjacent to the Experiment Station. Tenants of the Technology Farm are afforded opportunities to collaborate with Cornell’s world-class faculty, access to specialized laboratories and facilities, and top-notch business incentives.

A hard-working and diverse workforce and excellent workforce-development assistance make hiring good employees a little easier, and excellent health care facilities, modern schools, higher education opportunities, and moder-ately priced housing all make Geneva a great place to live.

H istoric downtown Geneva is a vibrant part of the community. The 60-acre lakefront features walking and bik-

ing trails, picnic areas, and a boat launch. Beautiful scenery combines with unique shops and eateries to create a downtown district that is not just a thing of the past. Downtown also boasts cultural amenities, including the Smith Opera House, the Geneva Public Library, the Prouty-Chew Museum, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Geneva’s Business Improvement District (BID), founded in 1986, leads efforts to pre-serve, revitalize, and market the downtown business district. BID fosters a downtown that safe and attractive to property owners, business people, tenants, shoppers, and visitors. BID’s programs focus on architectural design and preservation, economic planning and devel-opment, and business recruitment, retention, marketing, promotion, and unification.

Geneva has made significant improve-ments in the aesthetics downtown. All streets and sidewalks have been improved, new diagonal parking spaces have been added, and aging curbing and drainage systems have been replaced. Decorative Victorian lampposts have been installed, and brick accents along side-walks complement the historic atmosphere.

The Downtown Revitalization Loan Program (DRLP) provides loan assistance to business and property owners in downtown Geneva. Local banks offer reduced-rate loans to property owners and retail tenants within the district for interior improvements, façade improvements, working capital, and equip-ment. In collaboration with Geneva BID, four area banks developed a special rate loan program, the Property Improvement Preferred Plan (PIPP), which offers special incentives to Geneva BID property owners to stimulate continued renewal in downtown.

The Geneva BID is administering a New York Main Street grant of $200,000 to facili-tate façade and building renovations along

two blocks of Castle Street and one block of Exchange Street, in the heart of the city’s business district. The program provides 50 percent grant assistance to owners to improve a deteriorated façade. Target buildings are eli-gible for inclusion on the National and State Registers of Historic Places, and all work will be consistent with historic design standards.

Downtown is a bustling center for shop-ping, dining, and commerce. Several restau-rants and shops are located in historic build-ings that were once, taverns, stagecoach stops, and old homes, adding to the unique experi-ence of shopping and dining in Geneva.

education is a top priority in Geneva. A well-educated and trained public allows local business and industry to be

successful. Beginning with the earliest educa-tion of its children and continuing through job training and higher education, highly skilled educators are dedicated to providing the very best in teaching and instruction.

Geneva City School DistrictThe Geneva City School District educates

the children of both the city and town of Geneva, as well as portions of neighboring communities. The district has two elementary schools and a Head Start program, which is housed in the North Street building; it also includes a combined middle and high school. A full-time instructional staff of more than 245 teachers and 250 support staff keep the system running smoothly.

Approximately 2,500 students are enrolled in grades K–12. The average class size in grades K–6 is 22 students, while classes for grades 7–12 average 19 students. Students’ standardized test scores meet or exceed state averages, and well above 80 percent of gradu-ating seniors go on to attend some type of higher-learning institution. Every classroom is equipped with at least five networked computers at the elementary level, while computer labs and carts of laptop computers receive heavy usage at the middle school/high school complex on Carter Road.

Geneva High School offers a full program of academic courses, as well as advanced-placement (AP) courses in English language and composition, English literature and com-position, U.S. history, world history, calcu-lus, statistics, biology, and physics. Honors English 11 and pre-AP courses coincide with the school’s AP course offerings. In addi-tion, Gemini courses are offered for English 101, Spanish, and physics, which qualify for course credit at Finger Lakes Community College. The district also offers a variety of elective courses in areas of technology, art,

business, music, and family and consumer science.

The Geneva Middle School and High School’s Carter Road Complex lends itself to effective collaboration and an efficient transi-tion from the middle school to the high school program. In addition to the course offerings mentioned above, a full range of modified and high school level inter-scholastic sports, with many championship-level teams, are avail-able. Student leadership opportunities abound at all levels and include the international Olweus Bullying Prevention program, which takes a proactive approach to addressing bullying at all levels. Geneva Middle School and Geneva High School offer foreign-language courses in French, Spanish, and Latin. Acceleration is also offered in Earth science and algebra.

In addition to the accelerated course offer-ings, an Extended Studies program is available at Geneva Middle School and the district’s two elementary schools (North Street and West Street). Extended Studies describes opportu-nities for enrichment and gifted and talented instruction. Each building has an Extended Studies teacher who coordinates enrichment and gifted and talented programs. Their par-ticipation includes student government, math, and English language arts competitions, along with numerous after-school opportunities for students. Geneva Middle School offers double English language arts and math during the normal school day. The Carter Road Complex is noted for its opportunities for after-school academic support. A $450,000 21st Century Grant program is in operation until 5 p.m. at the middle and elementary school levels. All of the schools participate in the Arts in Education program, which provides funding for a large variety of extracurricular educa-tional opportunities, many of which are in

collaboration with the city’s renowned Smith Opera House.

Geneva’s two elementary schools boast an intensive program that supports early literacy, which is as at the heart of successful academic experiences for secondary students. This program is supported by a vibrant Head Start and universal Pre-K program for 3- and

4-year-olds. In addition, the district recently initiated the Geneva Reads initiative for stu-dents in kindergarten through second grade. Funded by a $30,000 grant, this initiative provides English and Spanish books for the home; once the books are read, they are placed in community gathering places for parents and their young children.

City GovernmentGeneva has a city manager form of gov-

ernment, consisting of the mayor, the eight-member City Council, and a city manager appointed by the Council. Six of the eight City Council members represent various wards in Geneva, while the two remaining Council members are elected at large. The mayor and council members each serve four-year terms.

The mayor and City Council make up the legislative and governing body of the city of Geneva. The City Council develops city poli-cies; enacts laws, ordinances, and resolutions; and hires the city manager to serve as chief executive officer for the city.

PoliceThe Geneva Police Department has 34

sworn officers as well as five full-time and six part-time civilian positions. Along with an aggressive road patrol, police services include a crime-prevention unit, bicycle patrol, foot patrol, and drug enforcement. The Geneva Police Department also provides School Resource Officers and Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) for area schools.

FireThe Geneva Fire Department is staffed

by 120 professional firefighters, including 18 career firefighters and more than 100 active volunteers. The career staff is responsible for driving and operating the department’s apparatus, conducting fire-safety inspections in commercial occupan-cies and places of public assembly, and conducting educational programs for the public. The department’s volun-teer firefighters train thousands of hours and respond to hundreds of fire department emergencies within the city each year.

The chief of the department also oversees 10 civilian dispatchers, who monitor the city’s Enhanced-911 system. The E-911 system

allows dispatchers to trace incoming calls in case the caller is incapacitated before giving his/her location. The system also stores valu-able information such as hazardous material and fire hydrant location information.

Town of GenevaThe town of Geneva borders the city of

Geneva. The town (population 3,350) has an elected Town Board composed of the town supervisor, the deputy supervisor, and three councilmen. Three volunteer fire associations provide fire protection, which is partially financed by a separate tax.

The earliest inhabitants of this area were the Seneca Indians. This large, powerful tribe’s capital was a village near what is now the corner of County Roads 4 and 6 — the pres-ent site of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station.

AgritourismA strong agricultural base lends itself to an

exciting industry: agritourism. From spring until fall, the area’s working farms, orchards, and vineyards are alive with activities for all ages. Wineries and farms make Geneva a prime stop for visitors who travel the wine trails. Some of the region’s most famous wines can be sampled in the Finger Lakes.

The Finger Lakes area offers a perfect place to learn about wine and expand your culinary expertise. Tucked among the hills and lakes are vineyards and wineries producing world-class wines. Today, with more than 100 winer-ies producing 40 million bottles per year, the region is among the largest wine producers in the nation. Family-owned orchards and vineyards make an increasingly significant contribution to Geneva’s economy. Many loca-tions offer guided tours, gift shops, tastings, and restaurants.

Overlooking Seneca Lake, historic Belhurst Castle is a beautiful attraction in Finger Lakes Wine Country. Newly built Ventosa Vineyards offers a setting that brings the ambiance of Tuscany to the Finger Lakes. Billsboro Winery, which features seven dry and semi-dry wines, offers a tasting room housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century barn. White Springs Winery features a new 5,300-square-foot facility with a panoramic view of Seneca Lake, as well as an expan-sive tasting bar and gift shop. Opened in September 2007, Three Brothers Wineries & Estates includes four tasting rooms, each with its own theme.

The Finger Lakes region is home to numer-ous farms and orchards that cultivate an aston-ishing variety of fruits and flowers. Local estab-lishments make maple syrup in the spring and grow berries in summer. Geneva’s orchards are famous worldwide for apples, but they also

feature peaches, apricots, and cherries. The fall harvest offers up fabulous corn, cabbage, and produce of every kind. Red Jacket Orchards began in 1917 and has been family owned and operated since 1958. Growing several types of apples, along with strawberries, raspberries, cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, and fresh prunes, the orchard also produces a selection of award-winning ciders and juices. Group bus tours can be arranged.

Water ActivitiesThe sparkling waters of the Finger Lakes

provide a spectacular way to enjoy the area’s recreational activities. Four of the 11 Finger Lakes — Seneca Lake, Keuka Lake, Canandaigua Lake, and Honeoye Lake — offer a full range of water activities, including swimming, sailing, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.

The Geneva Lakefront is a 60-acre multi-use property created in 1987 through the relocation of State Routes 5 & 20 from the shores of Seneca Lake. A boat launch and dock area in Lakeshore Park are avail-able, along with lighted trails. The Geneva lakeshore includes two additional sites for boat docking. The area is a prime location for hunting, fishing, and picnicking. The lakefront features a large gazebo overlooking Seneca Lake, and Concerts by the Lake are sponsored by the Recreation Department in July and August.

Seneca Lake, the “Lake Trout Capital of the World,” offers outstanding opportuni-ties for fishing and charters. Seneca Lake State Park offers a relaxing experience for swimmers and picnickers. Children will be delighted with the park’s Sprayground and playground facilities. With more than 100 water jets that spontaneously spray water, the Sprayground is the first of its kind built in the New York State Parks system. Neighboring the Sprayground is a traditional playground with equipment for children ages 4 through 12. The park also offers two excellent marinas with a total of 132 electric

slips and 84 non-electric slips. Transient slips are available at both marinas. A beach and nature trail are also part of the park, and the trails offer an excellent opportunity for winter fun with cross-country skiing.

Geneva Recreation DepartmentThe Geneva Recreation Department pro-

vides numerous services to the community. Foremost among its activities is the opera-tion of the Geneva Recreation Complex, an enclosed ice rink providing public skating, a figure skating club, and lessons in figure skat-ing and hockey. The Geneva Ice Complex hosts the Annual Girls’ Hockey Tournament and the Finger Lakes Figure Skating Show. The complex is also home to the Geneva Generals, Geneva High School Hockey team, and the Hobart Statesmen.

The Recreation Complex is also home to a variety of activities and programs, includ-ing tennis instruction for youth and adults, adult tennis tournaments, women’s softball, girls’ lacrosse, kickball, street hockey, and preschool recreation two mornings per week. Exercise enthusiasts will also find classes on flex and tone, cardio resistance, Pilates, Tai-Chi, and yoga.

The Recreation Department also offers seasonal programs such as arts and crafts, sports leagues, and trips. The weekly down-town Farmers Market operates from June until mid-October, offering the community a wide variety of seasonal produce and arts and crafts.

The Smith Opera HouseThe Smith Opera House’s impact on the

community is immense. Built in 1894 by phi-lanthropist William Smith, through the years the theater has played a variety of roles: opera house, playhouse, vaudeville venue, movie palace, performing arts center, and commu-nity cultural center. Today it is the center of the region’s cultural life, providing entertain-ment and education for patrons of all ages. The historic theater presents live performing arts and films on a 40-foot screen with Dolby digital sound. The Smith also hosts symphony orchestra concerts and performances by the Geneva Theatre Guild.

Geneva Historical SocietyThe Geneva Historical Society, a non-

profit educational corporation, is committed to preserving and interpreting the collective heritage of Geneva. Through its collec-tions, educational programs, collaborations

with other organizations, historic proper-ties, and the Fund for Historic Geneva, the Geneva Historical Society preserves Geneva’s past and cultivates an appreciation for Geneva history.

The society’s collections encompass 1,300 cubic feet of archives and 30,000 photo-graphic images, as well as furniture, decora-tive art, costumes, textiles, fine art, tools and equipment, and four historic properties.

Prouty-Chew HouseThe Geneva Historical Society Museum

and offices are located in the Prouty-Chew House. The facility features marvelous period rooms, cos-tume displays, and changing exhibits on Geneva’s history and culture. The site also features a gift shop, staff offices, col-lections storage, programming space, and the society’s archives and library, which are open to researchers, genealogists, and the public.

Geneva attorney Charles Butler built the Federal-style home in 1829. Phineas Prouty, a local merchant, purchased the home in 1842, and the property remained in the Prouty family for 60 years. Between 1858 and 1883, extensive alterations were made to the house, giving it the eclectic look seen today. Beverly Chew, the great-grand-son of Phineas Prouty, purchased the home in 1921, and in 1960 it was given to the Geneva Historical Society. Shortly after acquiring the Prouty-Chew House, the soci-ety built an addition to serve as a modern exhibit space and collections storage area. This addition, completed in 1965, today contains the Hucker Gallery, which pro-vides space for large exhibits and lectures as well as room for children’s programming and activities.

Rose Hill mansionThe Rose Hill Mansion is a National Historic

Landmark and is considered one of the finest examples of Greek revival architecture in the United States. Built in 1839, the mansion has 26 rooms, 21 of which are furnished in the then-popular Empire style, that are open to the public. Great effort has been made to have as many furnishings as possible original to the house. A full restoration of the entire property began in 1965, and by 1968 the mansion was open to the public. In 1974, Rose Hill Mansion was recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation for its meticulous attention to period detail throughout the

mansion and grounds. Thousands of people visit the mansion each year. Tour guides well versed in the mansion’s history and furnish-ings lead visitors through the rooms of the house. Visitors also have the opportunity to tour the grounds and gardens.

The Geneva Public LibraryThe Geneva Public Library began life

as a free association library — the Geneva Free Library — in 1905 and has since cel-ebrated more than 100 years of service to the Geneva community. Started by the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Geneva Public Library has grown to be one of the largest public libraries in the area and now serves a significantly larger and more diverse community.

Since 1990, the Geneva Public Library has received additional state aid to support a system of 42 public libraries in Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming, and Livingston counties. In 2005, the library’s original free association

was dissolved with the creation of the Geneva Public Library and the library district that now provides the Geneva Public Library with its first direct public funding.
