    Duringtheshortsummerthatwe'vejustexperienced,andI'lldescribeitasabouttwo

    weekslong,wherethetemperatureswereactually"summerlike",aquestionkeptgnawingat

    meregardingourexposuretogeneticallymodifiedfood!HasMonsantoandtheotherlarge

    Biotechcompaniesbeenfeedingus,ageneticallymanipulatedversionofoneofourlate

    summerfavourites,sweetcorn?Well,becauseIdidn'thaveananswerandIknowthatiffoods

    aregeneticallymodified,themostdangerousformtoeatitisinitsnaturalformasgrown.

    Becauseofthis,Iwouldn'tbuyanyfreshcobsofcornthatwereplentifulatthefarmer's

    marketsandroadsidestandsinthearea.Becausetherearenolawsregardingthelabellingon

    GMproduceinCanadawhichwouldallowconsumerstomakeinformeddecisionsinregards

    tothefoodtheypurchase,Ididn'thaveasinglefreshcobofcorn!

    NowthatIhavedonealittleresearchintothisquestion,Icameupwithsome

    personallydisturbing

    answers.

    And

    the

    answer

    is

    yes,

    acertain

    percentage

    of

    the

    "sweet"

    corn

    thatweallknowandloveisgeneticallymanipulated.I'mgoingtoaddanarticletakenfrom

    theCanadianBiotechnologyActionNetwork,thatwaspostedOctober23rd2013byLucy

    SharrattandTaariniChopraofCBAN.

    TestsDiscoverUnlabelledGMSweetCorninCanadianGroceryStoresandFarmersMarkets

    (Pleasenote:NosamplesweretestedfromMetrostores)

    October23,2013OttawaTestshavefoundunlabelledgeneticallymodified(GM)sweetcorn

    ingrocery

    stores,

    roadside

    stands

    and

    farmers

    markets

    across

    Canada,

    says

    the

    Canadian

    BiotechnologyActionNetwork(CBAN).

    OurtestingclearlyshowsGMsweetcornispresentinCanada,saidLucySharrattofCBAN.

    Thehighnumberofpositiveresultsinoursmallsamplesizealertsconsumerstothefactthat

    theycouldbeunknowinglybuyingGMsweetcorn.Attheveryleast,GMsweetcornshouldbe

    clearlylabelledsoconsumerscanmakeachoice.

    ThepurposeofCBANstestwastogetanindicationofthepresenceofgeneticallymodified

    (alsocalledgeneticallyengineered)freshsweetcorninCanada.

    Oursample

    size

    was

    small

    and

    random

    but

    shows

    aclear

    presence

    of

    GM

    sweet

    corn,

    across

    provincesandtypesofvendors,saidCBANresearcherTaariniChopra.Theresultsdonttell

    ushowmuchofCanadassweetcornisGM,buttheydotellusthatitsoutthere,inboth

    grocerystoresandfarmersmarkets.

    CBANtested43samplesofconventionalfresh,sweetcorn.HalfwerefromOntario;therest

    fromBC,AlbertaandNovaScotia.Thesampleswerepurchasedfromoutletsofmajorgrocery

    chains(Loblaw,WalmartandSobeys)aswellassomesmaller,independentgrocerystores,

    farmersmarkets,androadsidestands.

    43

    samples

    tested

    positive.

    This

    means

    that

    approximately

    35%

    of

    these

    sweet

    corn

    samplesweregeneticallymodified.

    GMsweetcornwasdiscoveredinsamplespurchasedfromLoblawstores.

    GMsweetcornwasalsopresentinsamplesfromfarmersmarketsandroadsidestands.

    Varioussamplesfromall4provinceswheresampleswerecollected Ontario,BC,Nova

    ScotiaandAlberta testedpositive.

    TestingofsamplesfromSobeysandWalmartdidnotfindGMsweetcorn.

    Results

    are

    not

    statistically

    significant

    but

    provide

    asnapshot

    of

    GM

    sweet

    corn

    in

    Canada,

    intheabsenceofmandatoryGMfoodlabellingandanygovernmenttracking,including

    statisticsonGMcropcultivation.

    ThetestswereconductedbyCBANstaff,atSeedsofDiversityCanada'slaboratoryin

    WaterlooOntario,usingstriptestsfortheGMproteinCry1Ab.

    Untilrecently,GMcorngrowninCanadawaspredominantlyfieldcorn,whichisusedfor

    animalfeed,processedfoodingredientsandbiofuels.GMsweetcornisthefirstGMwhole

    foodgrowninCanada,andraisesnewquestionsforconsumersaboutpossiblehealthrisks.

    Thesweet

    corn

    is

    genetically

    engineered

    with

    genes

    from

    the

    Bt

    bacteria

    to

    produce

    proteins

    thatmakeittoxictosomeinsects.

    SomefarmersmightbeplantingGMsweetcornwithoutknowingthatitsgenetically

    modified,orbeingawareoftheconsumerconcerns,saidSharratt.

    correlationtotheuseofGlyphosatepesticides,theacreageofGMOcornandsoyplantedand

    theincreasedincidentsofvariousdiseasesandillnessesintheU.S.population.

    BasedonalltheinformationthatIhaveseen,read,watchedandlistenedto,these

    GeneticallyModifiedfoodcropsareDANGEROUStohumanhealth.Some,infactmostofthe

    abovelistedchartsshowthattheacutehealthproblemsarisingfromtheconsumptionof

    thesegeneticallymanipulatedfoods,isalreadymanifestingitselfatalarmingrates.Ibelieve,

    thatasfarasthehazardousanddeadlysideeffectsstemmingfromtheconsumptionofthese

    productsandofglyphosateaswell,willberevealedoverthenextcoupleofgenerations,

    meaningourchildrenandtheirchildren.
