W elcome to the 2012 edition of the Genetic Edge Bull Sale. It’s extremely exciting for me writing our opening thoughts this year, for a couple different reasons. I think the most obvious to all of us would be the renewed energy in the entire agriculture industry. I’m a very optimistic person at the best of times, but WOW, does it not feel like we are in the right

place at the right time? The excitement in the livestock industry right now is electric. Commercially the market is seeing all-time highs, with more momentum building. If we think we’ve seen high priced calves, hang on this ride isn’t over yet. On the seed stock end, have you ever seen a fall sales run like we did this year? Amazing would best describe it.

The next reason for me is, in the spring of 1982, I purchased my first registered Simmental bull. 30 years ago, I skipped school, went with my parents to the Wetaskiwin Pacesetter Bull Sale, and bought “RAJ Sir Arnold 58P”. I guarantee you from that moment, at age 10, I knew some day we would have our own bull sale. Here we are today, living the dream, and welcoming you to our 13th annual sale.

I think this is the strongest group of bulls we have offered from top to bottom ever. It’s been many years in the making, but our cow herd is firing on all cylinders, and on February 10 we will offer you our best. As every year we always try to encompass new genetics, so you will see a few new sire groups represented, as well as our mainstay herd bull battery.

We are very grateful for the loyal customer base we have been able to grow from the past 26 bull calf crops, and all the friendships we’ve built along the way. One thing we take extremely serious is customer satisfaction. We want you to know if you have a problem with a bull, there is no problem. We want to be the first and last to know about it. This is something we are not willing to compromise, customer satisfaction is a must.

This year, the bulls were started on cereal silage for about a month after weaning, and then started on their grain ration in mid- October. Our bulls are not only bred to last, but fed to last. It is very gratifying for me to know we have 8 to 10 year old bulls still out working. Keep in mind as well several of these photos were taken in late November, because our sale is quite early. These bulls have really matured well, and will be an impressive group to view sale day.

Your herd bull purchases are a serious investment, and one of the most important decisions you will make. They will make the largest single contribution to your calf crop. I think it is rewarding to see our 4-H calves, (who are cull bulls), doing 4 plus pounds per day on an aggressive feed ration. The genetics are there for these bulls to produce those high gaining calves. There will be bulls in everyone’s budgets, to meet everyone’s needs. Some of the best buying to be had this spring will likely be early, as the momentum will carry deep into the spring sale season. Buy with confidence.

We invite you to join us early sale day to view this years’ offering, and enjoy a steak. If you are unable to attend the sale you are welcome to visit anytime prior to the sale, or contact myself or any of our sales staff to discuss your needs.

We look forward to seeing you on February 10 at the ranch.

Each year we feature our herd bulls at the beginning of each sire group. We are still going to do that, however this year we are going to feature three of our top cows, and their families. Its only right to start with “Dorothy”, as she is the cow that has truly done it all for us. She is a cow that is recognized by name in both the Purebred, and Commercial industry, not only in Canada, but World Wide. She has three sons in the sale but, her influence will be found throughout this entire catalogue. We put her down a few years ago now, but her legacy continues.

“Gizmo & Gadget” are from one of the last flushes we did on “Dorothy”. I really feel the influence of these two bulls won’t truly be realized until their daughters get into production. Yes they are going to produce a great set of calves, that will be colored right, have growth, and eye appeal, but when the maternal strengths of this cross kick in, stand back, those cows will be wicked good. Everyone is aware of the job “Appollo” has done for the breed, combine that with one of the true Matriarchs, and POW! “Gizmo & Gadget”

Although “Taboo” isn’t part of the “Dorothy” family” he a half brother to “Casanova”. His dam is a cow we selected from Porters herd reduction, and was second high seller, behind “Lopez”, the dam of “Viper”. Last year when we encountered bull problems, we leased back “Damascus” his older brother, by “Antonius”. I know all these different names being dropped in his footnotes may seem confusing, but I do have a point. Everyone of them has been a high seller, a cornerstone, or a feature at some point. The moral of the story is, “Taboo” has the capeability to add his name to a very select list of greats.

This will be the very last chance to purchase a “Picasso” son. Before we sold him, we bred one cow to him, and “Van Gogh” was the resulting calf, but I would say the old boy went out with a bang. He is totally awesome. Steming back to two of our top cow families in “Dorothy & Desiree”, “Van Gogh” has the tools to be a breeder bull. Lots of longevity in his heritage as well with “Palmer” & “Desiree” both working until age 18, and “Dorothy” at age 14. Also “Picasso” is gone from here but now is working in New Brunswick at 8 years of age. “Van Gogh” will be a good one that will paint his very own masterpiece.

Ah, “Casanova”, pure power, but not sacrificing any other traits to get there. We were so very fortunate to get ahold of some “Maestro” semen from Ferme Gagnon, and Wells’ Crossing. We used it sparingly, but what a set of calves we got. “Venom & Viper” the only other two bulls we produced both fetched $23,000. Last year “Tango” was selected as the “untouchable” heifer in our pen. (Incedentally she just had a Polled Antonius heifer calf). “Casanova” will be the fourth one for us, and what a bull he is. Everything I expected from the combination of these two powerhouses. Big muscle, and our top performance bull, in a moderate birth weight package. Herd bull time, “Casanova”.

“Jose Cuervo” is from the “Desiree” cow family. This has been a solid cow family for us, and as mentioned previous, she is still with us at age 18. On paper “Jose Cuervo” is a 3/4 brother to the great “Appollo” bull, as well as a half brother to Herlinde. I can’t help but think with where we are in the cattle industry now, this is the type of bull many people should be looking to, to build a strong female foundation. A really strong bull, with limitless potential. Have a shot of “Jose Cuervo”.

Without question “Monopoly” is one of my favorites in this years offering. His dam is absolutely one of our very best cows. She has 4 daughters in the herd and everyone of her bull calves has been a front end bull in our sales, and she will be heading to our donor pen shortly. “Monopoly” is a bull I contemplated retaining for ourselves, but would be limited as to where we would be able to use him in our herd. No doubt he will be a bull that will leave an impact on our breed, so for those of you needing a new bull to anchor your program, be sure to check out “Monopoly”.

If there ever was a cow to rival “Dorothy” for top spot in our herd, it was “Herlinde”. We went to the Great Guns dispersal with the sole purpose of owning her. She was a 10 year old cow, so time was not in our favor, but in the time we had her, she left a huge impact in our program. We have retained every daughter for our own program, and when you look at how they have produced its mind boggling. The influence this cow has had in the industry, speaks volumes of her quality. Although “Herlinde & Dorothy” were different types of cows, they have without question had the biggest impact on our breeding program.

If there is one bull in the bunch that on paper has the knockout punch, its “Cobra”. Sired by Beechinor’s Reserve National Champion Bull, “Viper”, and his dam is none other than “Hebe”, the mother of “Mojito”. He is a soggy, loose made bull, that should appeal to any program, and work on a wide variety of types. He is registered as horned, however I had a question mark on him at birth, and when we were clipping we feel they are scurrs not horns. Either way it doesn’t matter, this is a tremendous beef bull, that will do a serious job.

“Japetto” is a calf that created quite a stir as a baby. He had that herd bull presents about him from the day he was born, and wow did his first calving dam do a job. Every year, there is that one sacred untouchable heifer in our pen, that is off limits, kept only for us. “Venice” was that “W” female, and she is living up to her expectations. We thought long and hard about retaining “Japetto” for our own use, but decided to utilize our option of retaining 200 unit of semen for in herd use only, and share him with the industry. For those of you who were fans of our great “Montana” bull, here is his equal in my opinion, perhaps maybe a bit better. He was not given his calfhood shots, so international semen sales are a definite option as his tests have also come back negitive. Pre stud entry blood work will be done prior to the sale so he will be elligable to enter stud immediately following the sale. Heifer approved.

We really feel as though the decision to keep “Mojito” outright for our own program was the right decision, after his first calf crop sold. They were extremely well received, producing both the high selling bull and female in last years’ sales. His first calf crop averaged $7540 on 10 head, fairly impressive by our standards. Although he ran extremely heavy to heifer calves this past year, and the bulls we have are some of the youngest in the sale, look to these sons to add thickness, hair, growth, and pigmentation.

“Pursuit & Excellence” are a pair of bulls I have been very fond of all along. They are from a great cow family that will certainly add maternal strengths, and great carcass and growth qualities. They are classy looking individuals, with great shape, volume, and muscling. They should be very easy keeping, and maintain a very modest frame size. Last year we sold a full brother to “Pursuit” going to Dave & Pam Simpson, BC, and a full sister to “Excellence” to Big Valley Simmentals, AB. A very honest pair of rancher bulls, that would certainly work for anyone with multiple bulls in one pasture.

For anyone who attended the Fullblood Perfection Sale this past December, you may remember an outstanding heifer calf from Double Bar D that sold to Virginia Ranch. Well we were fortunate enough to have purchased a full sister to her dam from the Norwoods’, and “Joaquin” is her calf. She is an awesome, deep bodied female, that is real broody. The cross with “Mojito” is very complementary, and “Joaquin” is going to be a top notch bull that should fit anyone’s budget. There are always a few sale sleepers, let me help you by pointing this one out.

This is a nice young bull, that has really been coming on as of late. As I mentioned in “Mojito’s” bio, that his set of bull calves for the most part are the youngsters in the pen. Keep in mind these next three will not even be a year of age sale day, however as many of our customers breed later, I would suggest having a very serious look at all three. When you’re ready to go to work, they will be all there, and likely bought at a bit of a discount due to age. “Yuma” is from a fabulous cow we purchased from Ferme Gagnon. She is an idea Fleckvieh cow. This will be an outstanding purchase this spring.

If we were forced to sell our cows tomorrow, and were only able to keep one cow it would be “Yoshi’s” dam, “Lois”. Everybody loves “Lois”. She has the most incredible attitude, and you can do anything with her. I mentioned in some later footnotes on “Original Sin”, that he had the misfortune of loosing his recip dam. “Lois’ calf was about a month old, and we grafted him on her for a short period of time. The year before she raised twin heifers, and not only did she do a great job, but the one was our heaviest weaning heifer. He is one of the deepest ribbed, broadest topped, hairiest, dark red bulls in the pen. He was a calf that demanded your attention, right from birth, and was noticed by practically everyone all summer. I think he will have his share of friends sale day, but breeders be sure to seriously look at him, with the power of these “Samurai” calves he may get overshadowed a bit. Any other day he could be a feature bull. He’s even got a name for fame, find him, you won’t be sorry.

As with all the “Samurai” calves, they all surface to the top of the pen. When he came off grass, and started on feed, he took off quick, and we realized how good he really is. He is an ET calf from our good old “Desiree” cow, who is definatly showing her age now this year, but at 18 years old, she is still as sound as ever. I think that speaks volumes about the strength of this cow family alone, besides the fact that she produced one of our high sellers last year, in “Twenty X”, going to Stone Simmentals. Mark my word “Original Sin” will be one of the really good purchases this spring.

“Cloud Nine” is an absolute stand out in the pen. “Lindsay” his dam has been one of those no miss cows, producing 4 sons, “Perfector, Serengetti, Valdez, & Adrenaline” from 4 different sires going to 4 different purebred operations. She is one of our “Ginnie Pig” cows getting a new service sire virtually every year. We just expect her to have one of our best calves every year. There is little to no guess work with “Cloud Nine”. I always maintain, when buying a herd bull be sure he is from a great cow. I would rank his dam with in the top ten in our herd, and you already read about his grand dam “Herlinde” earlier. Step up to the plate, its herd bull time.

“Imax” is truly the big picture. He is a bull that will work in every sector of todays Simmental breed, whether it be on red, black, fullblood, or Fleckviehs. Polled or horned, cows or heifers, he offers something to absolutely anyone and everyone. We named him when he was only a few days old because of his unique characteristics to everyone. What was really cool is when he was a couple of months old a few people who hadn’t seen him yet started asking about him, by name, “Imax”. Trust me this bull has a future in the industry, and will help put someone on the map or keep them there. The best way to create the future is to create it yourself. We have created the future in “Imax“ as he encompasses the all qualities of the breed. He will have all blood work done for pre-stud entry, so he is ready to go following the sale. We are always on the never ending search for herd bulls and new genetics. When “Samurai” came up for sale a couple of years ago we pounced on the opportunity with R-Five Simmentals, after all its not every day you can buy a proven herd bull, just coming into his prime. Our excitement turned to frusteration, as we were forced to ship him before we actually got any cows bred, and lost a full calving season with him. On a positive note we did get a very small amount of on farm use semen, and yes its’ been a long wait for those first calves, but wholly crap are they good. He has 5 sons in the sale, and I say without any hesitation all 5 are breeder quality. Have a serious look at them, as offspring will be very limited.

“Gibraltar” has all the tools to getter done. Much of the attention in the pen has gravitated to his brother “Imax”, but “Gibraltar” can hold his own. He will work on the same broad spectrum that “Imax” can, and I promise you will be tickled with the results. When you see all four of “Elexis’ bull calves, I think you will have to agree there is some serious power in this cow, and being from “Samurai” and polled to boot, I think the marketing potential here is huge. Have a serious look. All these “Samurai” bulls are potent, and have wicked potential.

It took a few years of convincing, but we need to extend a huge thanks to Ross & Betty Small for finally agreeing to sell us “Elexis”. We brought her home and her first stop was the donor pen. We offered the right to flush her in our female sale, where the flush brought $12500, selling to Prospect Hill Simmentals. I know the “Future” for those calves will be very bright. She gave us four calves last year, and all four are here for your appraisal. She is a female I have admired as a calf, and I watched her develop into the female she has become today. She has all the traits we want to encompass into our program, and the fact she is polled is an absolute bonus. These are the first calves of hers to sell for us, and we are looking forward to adding some daughters in the herd, watch for more to come.

For the first flush on “Elexis” we wanted to play it safe, as you never know exactly what to expect the first flush. She has already been bred to “Western” with success, so we felt this would be a pretty sure thing. Yep it worked, “Bo Diggity & Target” are loose made, with lots of top, and quarter, and tremendous attitudes. “Bo Diggity” was on display at the female sale, and it could have easily been “Target” instead. These bulls will possess outstanding carcass traits, and be a pair to be recond with. Very useful , that can work in any program.

Without any doubt one of my favorite bulls in the pen. Seriously as a breeder, we can never produce too many bulls like him. He will work in any program, on any type of cows, bring in a big set of performance calves, yet still leave a great set of replacement heifers in the process. His dam always gives us a great calf, and is backed by a superior cow family. His full sister was picked out by Mackenzie last year to be her 4-H heifer. I guess that should indicate what we feel his potential will be. He won’t be the high seller sale day, but very well may have the most friends. “Hard Rock” a damn good bull.

“Horizon” offers an interesting package. He comes from a line that always produces moderate birth weights & short guestation lengths, but are extremely high in performance. In fact this is a cow family that we typically breed to bulls that we know will tend to give you extra birth and performance, because we know they will be extremely moderated. He is a bull with great length, and a strong quarter. If you look at the “Horizon”, and want one to give you small birth, and be big on performance, the choice is very obvious.

“Razzmatazz” has become a mainstay for us. We get such positive comments about his sons out working, and for us the cross of “Tazz & Stride” has been an awesome one two punch. The “Tazz” bulls will offer extra length of spine, growth, hair, and incredible dispositions. It has been very rewarding for us with Mackenzie in 4-H, being able to finish a few calves, so you can see what these cattle will do with a real push. The “Tazz” calves have power growth, and the daughters are transmitting that into there calves as well. “Razzmatazz” always gets a big pen, so once again he has the big section of bulls, lots of choices in his offering for everyone.

This is another pen favorite of mine. A real loose made, soggy bull, with tons of hair, broad topped, and a typical “Razzmatazz” attitude. As a first calver she raised a front end Montana bull, selling to Ferrybank Colony, followed by two full brothers to “Grand Slam”, going to Steve Mounkes, and Bill Orlick. Genetically “Columbia” is bred to take you to a whole new level, and you’ll do so with style.

We are so pleased to still have “Stride” in our bull battery. After a spinal injury a couple of years ago, his days looked numbered, but he went out again this spring and did a great job again. He has the second largest sire group, and look to his sons to moderate frame, add muscle, and foot structure. “Stride” himself is possibly the best footed bull we’ve owned. He has huge feet, with tremendous depth of heel, they are shaped perfectly, and are very semetrical. His daughters in production are super good, and cross very well with “Razzmatazz”. They are a great one two punch, that compliment each other very much.

“Yosemite” offers a bit of a different pedigree from most on the bottom side. We purchased his grand dam “Anna” from JB’s reduction sale, as we knew this was one of his top producing cows for many years. We have had good success with adding some of these older proven matriarchs into our herd, to build new cow families around. This is her only daughter for us, but she is a dandy. “Yosemite” is a real beefy bull, that possesses extra length, and has a fabulous muscle pattern about him. If you market your steer calves in the fall, this bull will produce those big heavy weight performance steers that will be highly sought after.

For me “Stealth” is a real stand out in this sire group. I like the total make up of him, but when you look at his pedigree, he should be exactly what he is. He is loaded with greatness from top to bottom. He has a pedigree of cows behind him where the next one in line is just a bit better than the one before. That’s a true sign of progression, and my saying of buy a bull from a great cow, in “Stealth’s” case it is buy a bull backed by great cows. When we decided to purchase “TNT” we syndicated him with Stone Simmentals, Leahy Farms, Prospect Hill & ourselves. We only marked 50 units of semen on him the first year, via public auction, where it was extremely well received. As a group we felt as though he would best serve our needs, by allowing us to basically market the first progeny. With our own program, we also utilized him very heavily as a service sire to many of our bred heifers, of which a large portion of these females were marketed. We certainly felt as though the heifers bred to “TNT” did receive a premium. He calved extremely well for us, and was therefore used that much more in the heifer pen. With the exception of one heifer calf sold the prior fall, his offspring made a very impressive debut last spring, and this past fall, where 17 head averaged just $3 shy of a $4100 average. As I mentioned many of his services for us, were on heifers, and in fact a good portion of those females were sold, so his numbers represented are relatively small, however, his bull calves average $4750 for us last year, and his lone representative this year is plumb awesome. We are once again offering 5 packages of 10 units on “TNT”. He will offer calving ease, growth, extra pigmentation, lots of hair, great length, and obviously all his offspring will carry the polled gene. A great opportunity to purchase semen from a proven bull with an impressive track record.

I think the blend of these two has really complimented here to produce “Baldy”. He is a bull from just a first calving “Blue” daughter, that is really coming on, and by sale day should definatly have some friends. He should be able to be used on heifers, but supply a bit more power in the process. Yep he’ll make them polled, and he should give you some blace faces in the process. Those baldy heifers are worth a bit more, lots of potential here. Heifer approved.

This is a red bull that I think will really be appreciated when he reaches his prime. He is a flashy looking dude, that has lots of hair, hip, length, and style. He has lots of performance, and I think he will produce a stellar set of calves. His dam is one of my personal favorite red cows, and we have always had huge success with her sire “Canadian”. All in all I think he is right for the times, can be used anywhere, and like good wine, “Merlot” will only get better with age.

Well this guy was named in the spring, when someone picked him out. When Joe came out in early February he fell in love with him, and seriously! He would leave a cool can of diet coke to go look at him. That’s serious stuff. Many a cigarette butts are at the gate where this bull spent his first few months of life, from his on looker. He was quoted as saying “That’s your best calf right there mister”. Well you be the judge, as “Smokin Joe” will provide big growth, and leave a great set of steers, and an outstanding set of heifers. Yes sir re buddy boy, he’s a dandy. FACT!!

“Black Out” is a nice blend of genetics, providing a bull that will be able to be utilized on a wide cross section of cows. He has great length, and would do a bang up job on a straight set of british cows to just add a bit more punch, or use him on a set of exotics to maintain power and growth. Either way he is a very likeable bull, that will transmit extra pounds onto a calf crop at weaning, and they will look good in the process.

“Big Red” comes from another of our very productive “Robin Hood” cows. I think these cows may be some of the best kept secrets in the industry. They are hastle free low maintanence cows that just consistently produce time and time again. His sire “Dynamite Black” is a bull I’ve always had a soft spot for. He was just a loose maid, soggy, mellow bull, that you could trust on to add hair, disposition and big growth. “Big Red” will be a big time performance bull that should last for many, many years.

It’s always interesting every year, coming up with footnotes, and learning the personalities of the bulls as you go. “Typhoon” would be recognized as Mr. Congeniality. You can’t help but like his laid back disposition. But he has way more attributes than just that super personality. He is a super stout made bull, that combines maternal and performance characteristics into a super total package. He is a definite pick for me to retain daughters, and produce an outstanding set of steers. A very strong Fleckvieh cow family backing him as well in “Western 37A” as she was one of our stellar cows that never made it to the donor pen, but had every right to be there.

Unfortunately due to our smaller Purebred numbers we simply can’t utilize these herd bulls as long. “Blue” did a great job for us but worked himself out of a job, and now works for Leedale Colony. If you want to thicken up a set of red calves, and add extra performance, “Blue” could get the job done. He was only used for a brief period last year, and “Shockwave” was his only bull calf, but he’s a dandy, and is my personal favorite of the red group. Big bang for your bucks invested here, this is a super rancher’s bull that should be appreciated by everyone and off of a great “Power Cat” dam just adds value. Big performance.

We owned “Blue” in partnership with Lee & Tina Robson; Lockhart Valley Simmentals. He did a very good job in both of our herd, but because we both have relatively small Purebred numbers, it’s difficult to keep a bull for a significant length of time, before you’re somewhat puzzled as to where you can use him. We sold him to Leedale Colony, where they will certainly get many more years use from this great herd bull. We will still utilize him on a smaller scale through AI in our programs. “Blue” is incredibly sound, has a big foot, with lots of depth of heel. He is a heavy muscled bull, with lots of rib, and a strong top. He transmitted great hair, and good dispositions. His daughters that are now in production are quite good. “Blue” progeny will add growth and performance to your program.

She always puts a contender in the pen, and this guy is no exception. Big stout, hairy, polled, super red baldy bull, that will produce high dollar replacement heifers. His brother last year, was one of the feature red bulls, that was our top performance red bull, selling to Ferrybank Colony. As you can see he was a heavy weight at weaning, and had a set back when he started on feed, but mark my word, there will be no gamble with “Texas Hold Em” as this guy will certainly stack the deck in your favor.
