WELCOME

PRELUDE Dawn Cyril Jenkins CALL TO WORSHIP

We’ve gathered to worship, to sing and pray and hear God’s Word, because: God’s love lasts forever! Even when God seems far away, we know: God’s love lasts forever! Even when nothing is going right, and we’re ready to give up, we know: God’s love lasts forever! When people treat us badly, we know: God’s love lasts forever! When we’re all alone, and we feel like no one loves us, we know: God’s love lasts forever! Let’s worship God together!

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray.

Loving and Sustaining God,

You call us to obedience, to follow you in all things; to give up the things we cling to, and to give ourselves wholeheartedly to your purposes.

We confess that we don’t always find this easy to do.

We confess that it is often very difficult to let go of the things we love. But we also know that you never ask more of us than what is possible, and that you stand ready, at all times, to sustain us, and to provide everything we need.

Give us courage to faithfully follow your leading, even when we cannot see the outcome, even when the path you call us to seems impossible to comprehend. Help us to trust you in all things, to let go of everything that would stand in the way of whole-hearted obedience to you.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Links to our message just for children as well as to Sunday School materials for families to do together can be found in the e-announcements for this worship service and on our website: www.newark-umc.org.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Genesis 22:1-14

After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him,

“Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love,

and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt

offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.”

3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey,

and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he

cut the wood for the burnt offering, and set out and went to

the place in the distance that God had shown him.

Page 7: Genesis 22: 1-14newark-umc.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/6-28... · donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come back to you.” 6 Abraham

4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far

away.

5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the

donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and

then we will come back to you.”

6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his

son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the

two of them walked on together.

7 Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father!” And he said, “Here

I am, my son.” He said, “The fire and the wood are here, but

where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

8 Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt

offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.

9 When they came to the place that God had shown him,

Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He

bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the

wood.

10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to

kill his son.

11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said,

“Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to

him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not

withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

Page 8: Genesis 22: 1-14newark-umc.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/6-28... · donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come back to you.” 6 Abraham

13 And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by

its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as

a burnt offering instead of his son.

14 So Abraham called that place “The Lord will provide”; as it is

said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be

provided.”

The Spirit of God has been present in the reading and hearing of these words.

Thanks be to God!

PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

INVITATION TO PERSONAL PRAYER AND OFFERING

This is the time where we make our love visible through the giving of our tithes and offerings.

Today we highlight the ministry of the Worship Team. This committee is a team of individuals who set the stage for Worship each week. We lay out the tablecloths and linens, set out the flowers, keep the candles lit, prepare the bread and juice, and lift high the cross. We sing and play the music. We invite others in and hold the door open. We help them find a seat. We help lead the services and pray. Our whole goal is to create and maintain a holy space so all can join with God in a real and intimate way.

To support this and our various other ministries in the community and the world, please either mail your contribution to the church or use our convenient on-line giving option:
