Our Lenten Focus Lent, the church-year season that begins on Ash Wednesday, is a time of penitence and spiritual renewal. Some people give up a luxury or vice during Lent as a form of self-denial; others undertake a project that benefits others. The point isn’t to denigrate ourselves or to see how much we can do without. Instead, Lent helps us reflect on Jesus’ death. As Timothy Keller writes in The Reason for God: “The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less.”
Evening Worship Service 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26th, 2020

Men’s Bible Group Interest for Lent There will be a Men’s Bible Study Group for the month of Lent. Please visit our website geneseoumc.org for upcoming announcements and the schedule of the study. For questions, please contact the office at (319) 478-8788 or [email protected].
Women’s Bible Study
Many women are tired. Tired of trying to do more, be more, and have more. With busy work, home and church lives, it's easy to feel like our spiritual growth gets short-changed. But what if God is already pleased, more than pleased--totally head over heels crazy about us and our hearts regardless of our mistakes and crunched schedules? If it's true, that big load we've been carrying feels lighter already. In You're Already Amazing, Holley Gerth wants readers to know that they can lay down the burden of their own, and others expectations, and embrace who they are as beloved, talented women. Rediscover the gifts you've been given and the life of purpose that God has for you.
Sign-up Sheet for interest in this Women’s Book Study is in Fellowship Hall. All materials will be provided at no cost. The plan is to read and discuss two chapters a month and meet once a month (approximately two hours) for 6-7 months. Friends from the community are invited. Please speak to Anne Salasek (712) 301-1859, for any questions. Dates, times and location of study will be determined by sign up interest.

“What Have You Done for Me Lately?” Years ago I worked with a representative from an advertising agency who was helping us develop new markets for a product. The guy ended up being a good friend and we stayed in contact for many years after our projects were complete. Jack was elderly but very energetic for his age. He was also very down to earth and very realistic about relationships with customers. One thing he would say over and over again, “Your customers will always be asking, whether they say it out loud or not, What Have You Done for Me Lately?” He wanted us to make sure we did not make one good deal and then not continue to service the customers and provide the best possible partnerships. Jack would even ask us to name one thing we did that month to strengthen our relationship with our customers. That makes sense in every relationship we have in life; whether it is our family or friends or work. You and I need to keep investing in people to keep our relationships alive and well. That type of care involves personal contact, conversation and attention. It should be no secret that we also need to invest in our relationship with God. I have not always been as faithful in doing this as I know I should. I wonder if God ever wonders, “What have you done for me lately?” Before we say no, we should look at what God’s Word has to say. One of my favorite Scriptures concerning this is from Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Does my life reflect this Scripture? Have I acted justly? Have I shown my love for mercy? Am I walking humbly before Our Lord? What have we done for Our God lately? What one thing have we done this month to strengthen our relationship with God? Blessings Pastor Harry
