When the Generations project

started 13 years ago, it was

started with a dream of the

community

providing the space

needed for the senior

center and childcare

center to flourish.

The Coalition also

recognized the

benefits of bringing

kids and older

adults together,

allowing the

generations to

share their talents

and time with one

another. They knew that building

intergenerational relationships in

a community would strengthen it.

Two great examples of

intergenerational programming are

the Head Start Pal program and

the Drop in Computer Class.

The Head Start Pal program is a

service program where adults and

Riverview Middle School students

come together to write letters to

the Head Start children. During

the letter writing period the group

discusses topics to get to know

one another better. Questions

like, “What type of candy was your

favorite as a child?” Or “What do

remember doing for fun when you

were younger?”

The adults and

students enjoy

hearing what the

other generation

has experienced and

the discussion

allows everyone to

get to know more

about a generation

they don’t know

much about.

The Drop in

Computer classes

not only allow the kids to share

their wealth of knowledge on

computers with the adults, but it

also helps them to learn more

about older community members

who value their help. In today’s

world where the generations don’t

mix very often, these programs are

allowing intergenerational

relationships to develop. Studies

have shown intergenerational

relationships are good for the kids,

the adults and the community.

intergenerational programming to

It is hard to believe that two months of 2013 are already behind us—time sure goes fast when you are having fun! There are so many things going on at Generations now that it is hard to not miss something, so we wanted to take some time to highlight a few of the special things going on in the next month. First, we have some special artwork coming to the center for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to The Plymouth Woman’s Club, who each year coordinates the Helen Farnsworth Mears Art competition, guests of Generations will be able to enjoy the wonderful artwork of local 7th and 8th grade students. The Woman’s Club displays the artwork, coordinates judging and enters the winning pieces into the District Mears Art competition. This year the art will be on display at Generations from March 15th through April 2nd. The evening of March 15th the Woman’s Club is hosting an open house at Generations so community members can enjoy the show and learn what pieces will be going onto the District competition. Stop by the center to congratulate all the talented artists and enjoy viewing their creative works of art. Next I want to highlight our new movie series. We have purchased a license and will be showing a movie the third Tuesday of every month. Starting in April we will add Classic Movie Friday too—see details on page 6. We take requests, so let us know what you are interested in seeing on our big screen! Last but not least, our final fair relating to the “Making Good Decisions” series is on April 4th at Generations. From 10-11:30 am vendors who offer services to make living at home easier/possible (cleaning, running errands, adult day care, home hospice care) will be represented. Then between 12:30 and 2pm assisted living, long term care and rehabilitation centers will be here to tell guests about their residential living options. We hope you take advantage of this “one stop shopping” opportunity to learn more about the resources our community offers you and your loved ones.

A Wise Irishman’s Joke

An Irishman fell a hundred feet from a building site and was asked if he was hurt by the fall. “Indeed not”, he replied. “It wasn’t the fall that hurt me at all, it was de landing.” Free Haircut A man and a little boy entered a barbershop together. After the man received the full treat-ment - shave, manicure, haircut, etc. - he placed the boy in the chair. "I'm goin' to buy a green tie to wear for the pa-rade," he said. "I'll be back in a few minutes." When the boy's haircut was done and the man still hadn't returned, the barber said, "It looks like your daddy forgot all about you."

"That wasn't my daddy," said the boy. "He just walked up, took me by the hand and said, 'Come on, sonny, we're gonna get us a free haircut!'"

The primary goal of the PACC exercise program is to

provide meaningful and effective exercise classes that

will have a significant and positive impact on the

health and wellness of those who attend. I have be-

come mindful of the many challenges and ailments

participants in my classes are experiencing and have

done my best to make necessary changes so every

participant will benefit from the exercises/activities

we do. I do however, want to offer information on

how you can help maximize the benefits of exercise

prior to coming to class.

Some of the exercises we do are intense and challeng-

ing, so my advice to all is to follow these simple tips

before heading to our exercise class. First and fore-

most, you need to have clearance and approval from

your doctor before coming to this, or any other exer-

cise program. If all is good with your doctor, next

you should eat well to give yourself the energy need-

ed to exercise. It is recommended to do this around an

hour or two before you plan on working out. Keep in

mind that strenuous exercise after a heavy meal is not

advisable, so eat something light and let things digest

first before you come to class. I also recommend you

drink plenty of water so you will be hydrated before

coming to class.

Prepare your mind by putting your attention on the

benefits you will be experiencing by coming to exer-

cise class. People who exercise regularly have been

able to do so, because they believed it made them feel

better and increased their ability to move. Remind

yourself of how good exercise is for your health. It

can motivate you to make the effort to come to class,

even when you’re feeling tired, sore or unmotivated.

It is also important to prepare your body. According

to the Arthritis Foundation you should apply hot or

cold treatment to the areas of body you are exercising

to help reduce and prevent pain. You should also

spend several minutes breathing deeply while pictur-

ing yourself doing your exercises.

Exercise and medication schedules are also a discus-

sion you need to have with your doctor. Exercise will

have an effect on blood sugar levels so if you take

medication; ask your doctor if you need to adjust your

exercise or medication schedule.

It is always a good idea to be ready for a physical

challenges you face everyday. Exercise classes will

help you with this. Please visit the PACC and talk to

me about our exercise classes. We would love adding

you to our list of people who made a commitment to

getting and staying in shape. Fred Brown

Walking 2,500 Miles The miles just keep on growing, in large part, because of increased participation. In January we logged over 300 miles and in February we are over 250 miles. Our goal for 2013 is 2500. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:30 we do a 2-mile fitness filled exercise walk. Put us on your calendar and be a part of our walk fit team.

National Senior Wii Bowling League

PACC Wii bowlers are off to a great start. We have 2 teams this year in the National Senior League and both teams are doing great.
