Welcome back, Girl Scouts, leaders and parents to the 2020-2021 Adventure Guide! Thank you all for riding out the world-wide pandemic in true Girl Scout fashion and helping us break barriers once again by finding new ways of work that, in the end, introduced us all to alternative program delivery models and kept us all connected throughout COVID-19!

This “new normal” has created opportunities galore to add to our programming arsenal, and we hope you will enjoy the variety of newly created virtual programs, but one thing we won’t lose sight of is Girl Scouts sisterhood!

Attending programs with your family, friends, and troops pro-vides another level of comradery building that you simply can’t find in any other youth-serving organization. But let’s not leave out the FUN. These programs are great learning experiences, yes; but more importantly they help complete the Girl Scout experience by providing educational and fun opportunities that girls simply might not get otherwise.

I invite you to experience Girl Scouting via one of our many horse programs or attend an overnight experience with friends and family to experience the great outdoors Girl Scout style. We have programs of interest to the scientist in each of us or the banker, the model or the athlete. Whether you are a traveler or prefer to stay closer to home, Girl Scout programs can open doors previously not visible to many young girls. Register, come see for yourself all of the wonderful things Girl Scouts has to offer.

We can’t wait to help grow each young Girl Scout into a young lady of courage, confidence and character who truly will make the world a better place! Let us help show her how. Join us and enjoy.

Pam Kovacevich

Girl Scouts unleashes the G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)TM in every girl, preparing her for a lifetime of leadership—from taking a nighttime hike under the stars to accepting a mission on the International Space Station; from lobbying the city council with her troop to holding a seat in Congress; from running her own cookie business today to tackling cybersecurity tomorrow.

Our Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a one-of-a-kind leadership development program for girls, with proven results. It is based on time-tested methods and research-backed programming that help girls take the lead—in their own lives and in the world.

Girl Scouts is proven to help girls thrive in five key ways as they:

Develop a strong sense of self.

Display positive values.

Seek challenges and learnfrom setbacks.

Form and maintain healthy relationships.

Identify and solve problemsin the community.

The Girl Scout Difference:Girl Scouts offers the best leadership development experience for girls in the world—one that is designed with, by, and for girls.

The inclusive, all-female environment of a Girl Scout troop creates a safe space where girls can try new things, develop a range of skills, take on leadership roles, and just be themselves.

It is no secret that Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low loved nature and the great outdoors. And over the past 100 years, many Girl Scouts tell us “camping trips” are one of the best things about their Girl Scout experience. Studies show that girls today are not spending nearlyenough time outdoors. Technology and structured activities leave less time for girls to get outside and enjoy nature. But, troops can still get outdoors at our Girl Scout properties. Learn more about our camps and make reservations on our website at www.getyourgirlpower.org under Camps. The hyperlinks on our website will take you to reservation site, where you will find more pictures of the campgrounds, costs, capacities, and amenities. Once you reserve a campsite, a confirmation email with a hyperlink to your information packet will be emailed to you.

Troop Camping Tips: • Take your Basic Outdoor Training a.s.a.p.! This training will give you the basic information you need to know.

• Girl Scouts of United States of America (GSUSA) has awesome training videos. Go to girlscouts.org and click on For Adults and Volunteer Resources for more outdoor resources.

• Build a team of parents to help you plan the event. You do not have to do everything solo.

• Get the girls involved. Ask them what they want to do at the campout! What badges do you want to work on? Let them help plan the menu.

• Book your campsite sooner rather than later. Site reservations open 6 months in advance. When booking your site, request any outdoor adventures on the Outdoor Adventures Form in the forms section of our website. Adventures are facilitated by volunteers and the sooner we know a date, the better.

• Set a cookie goal that helps cover the cost of your campout! Make sure the girls and parents understand that the Cookie Program will help pay for the outing.

• Make sure your parents are informed (and invited) to the overnight. Be sure to get a permission slip for each girl.

• While camping, respect wildlife and others camping. Leave a place cleaner than you found it.

• Have fun! If something goes awry when you are camping, let it go and focus on the girls and being in the moment.Tr

Bronze. Silver. Gold. These represent the highest honors Girl Scouts can earn as Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. All three awards give girls the chance to do big things while working on an issue that’s captured their interest in a big way. Whether they want to plant a community garden at school and inspire others to eat healthily for the Bronze, advocate for animal rights for the Silver, or build a career network that encourages girls to become scientists and engineers for the Gold, they’ll inspire others (and themselves).

The first step for a girl interested in earning her highest award is participating in an Award Chat. Award Chats will discuss the guidelines for earning the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. The chats will be hosted as a go-to meeting, which will consist of a PowerPoint training that outlines the guidelines, paperwork and deadlines. It will also include a question-and-answer opportunity, so troop leaders, parents and girls will feel more confident in their journey towards these awards. This year, the Award Chats will be offered as a Monday night option or a Thursday lunch and learn. The chats will be 30 mintues long. To register for AWARD CHATS, visit GETYOURGIRLPOWER.ORG and click on EVENTS. Deadline to register is the week before each chat. Contact Jessica Foster with any award questions at [email protected].

Plastic Pickup

Taylor ForceJacksonville, IL

To address pollution and waste in the area, Taylor reflected on all the plastic markers that are thrown away and filling up landfills. To benefit future generations, she enlisted the help of Crayola Color Cycle and collected various markers to be recycled. This project also helped Taylor’s leadership skills; being shy, she had to step up and speak with business contacts and ask if collection bins for the markers could be dropped at their location. Taylor hopes this project will make people more mindful of recycling and the importance to do more of it.

Inspiration and Hope for Children’s Literacy

Rachel Gatewood

Urbana, IL

Rachel noticed that kids in her community had a lack of drive to read

or write, causing lower test scores and lower self-esteem. In order to combat the

issue, she gathered volunteers and held book drives to donate books to children

in need. Combining her interest in language arts, she gave inspiring talks and showed

videos to elementary schoolchildren as she encouraged reading, writing and life skills

and their potential impact.

Combining Arts and Physical Education for Homeschoolers

Grace LynchSullivan, IL

Grace wanted to create an opportunity for homeschoolers to learn about the arts, specifically dance. She found there was a lack of outlets and structured opportunities in central Illinois for homeschooled children to get exercise and have fun. She coordinated with a local studio and created dance classes from classical ballet to Bollywood, helping ed-ucate students about different dance styles in addition to helping them become more phys-ically active by learning the dance technique for each style. Grace enjoyed working with children and seeing them succeed.

Read Around the World

Abby McElroy

Dalton City, IL

Discerning a lack of interest in reading for joy within her community, Abby implemented a program that uses

positive reinforcement with 2nd and 3rd graders to further encourage reading. She created a system where students

receive tickets after reading for 30 minutes, which count toward collective

tickets per classroom to win prizes.By rewarding students and classrooms as

well engaging them with role models, Abby invested in the positive

reinforcement of reading and literacy.

Preserving History in a Small Rural Town

Hannah McGintyVermont, IL

Hannah’s project addressed the loss of family and local history in rural

towns. As populations declined, there was a lack of people tending to

cemeteries and families moving across the U.S. Her project targeted local residents interested in preserving

history who would be teaching educational technology classes and those who could retrieve the history

once recorded. Hannah put leadership skills to work by organizing people,

information, and resources that would last many lifetimes.

Gold Award Girl Scouts

Central Illinois Girl Scout Patch Program

Sydney Olson Pawnee, IL

Sydney saw a need for kids to get out-doors more. She visited nine local at-tractions in central Illinois and focused on six—Allerton Park, All Wars Museum, Caterpillar Visitors Center, Matthiessen State Park, New Salem and Scovill Zoo. She developed patch requirements for each location and created both a flier and website to share the information. She hopes to help the younger genera-tion of Girl Scouts enjoy the great outdoors even more, learn history of different locations within the Land of Lincoln, have fun, and earn patches.

Gold Award Girl Scouts

Education Outside the Classroom

Megan Moody Gibson City, IL

Megan saw a need in her local elementary school recess time. She saw that when it rained, the children had little to play with outdoors. To address the situation she painted agility games, shapes, colors and maps on the school’s blacktop for thee students to improve their motor skills, encourage fitness and education, and resolve conflict. The children at the school learned with the colorful display painted on the blacktop that can be sus-tained by the maintenance crew at the school for years to come.

Rain Garden Informative Aid

Guenevere Rees

Chatham, IL

To address the issue of children‘s lack of knowledge about native wildlife

plants, Guenevere created a rain garden. The garden contains native

Illinois wetland plants, with signs showing the interesting facts about each plant. When the plants bloom,

they will attract other wildlife such as butterflies, moths and rabbits, so the

children can see how insects and animals interact with plants. This

hands-on learning tool teaches children about their environment and the

importance of protecting native wildlife.

St. Joseph Garden

Heidi NovakSt. Joseph, IL

Heidi’s project addressed the issue of children not having a hands-on

learning experience in the classroom. Teachers told her that

school children couldn’t see the actual plant cycle because there was no time in the school day. Therefore, she made a butterfly garden outside

of the grade school in the community and made educational binders for each of the plants and

for the butterfly cycle. This will give teachers an additional learning tool

for the importance of plants.

Fun Pet Show

Olivia TurleyCarlinville, IL

In Carlinville Olivia founded an annual Fun Pet Show to serve as a fundraiser and adoption event for the Macoupin County community. After realizing the overcrowding and lack of funding at the local animal shelter, Olivia decided to take the lead and assist. Monies raised at the event helped to purchase food, supplies and medicine for the shelter. The adoption rate also increased during the event. A committee will be formed to continue the show annually.

World Thinking Day February 22

On February 22 of each year, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from 146 countries celebrate World Thinking Day (WTD)—that’s one BIG celebration!

World Thinking Day is not only a great opportunity to rally the global sisterhood around a particular theme—it’s also a chance to

support girls as they travel internationally, connect with sister

Girl Guides, and take action globally.

Girl Scout Week March 7 - 13

Celebrated each March, starting with Girl Scout Sunday and ending with Girl Scout Sabbath on a Saturday, it always includes Girl Scout’

March 12 birthday.

Girl Scout BirthdayMarch 12

Commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered

the organization’s first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia.

Girl Scout SundayMarch 7

Girl Scout Sunday is a special day dedicated to thinking about your beliefs and how they’re

reflected in the Girl Scout Law. Think of thethings the two have in common and

share your thoughts with others.

Girl Scout SabbathMarch 13

Besides reflecting on your beliefs and how they’re echoed in the Girl Scout Law, we urge

you to take some time this Girl Scout Sabbath to learn something new about

someone else’s faith.

Founder’s DayOctober 31

Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday or Founder’s Day, October 31, marks the birth in 1860 of Girl Scouts of the USA

founder Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia.

Find out why Dublin has so many colorful doors, see where Shakespeare drew his early inspiration, and put your camera’s memory to the test with photos of the Eiffel Tower!

Girl Scout DestinationsDo you love animals? Do you like adventure? Sydney and Jenna, Girl Scouts from central Illinois do! Sydney went on a Celtic Adventure and Jenna got to attend the Advanced Space Academy.

The Celtic Adventure: Ireland and Scotland destina-tion was sure one to remember. I had the chance to meet several other Girl Scouts across the United States plus some scouts from Germany and Wales. Their culture wasn’t that much different than ours, but the scenery was. I visited in both Ireland and Scotland buildings that were older than the United States.

We visited Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, and the High-lands. All of these places are amazing and I would definitely go back. Some of the highlights we visited are the Titanic Museum, Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle, and Loch Ness. While we were in Belfast, we saw where the Titanic was built and launched from. Thank you for letting me have the chance to see these beautiful countries. On my destination trip, I met friends that I will stay in contact with and add-ed another adventure to my Girl Scout journey. - Sydney Olson
