Grades will be weighted as follows:

Text Book: College Physics by Serway/Vuille 11th edition and Enhanced Web Assign (EWA)

Topics to be covered: Unit conversion, vector and scalar quantities, one dimensional motion, two dimensional motion, relative velocity, Newton’s laws and application thereof, friction, work and energy, The Work Energy Theorem, springs, power, momentum impulse, conservation of momentum, angular motion, centripetal force, Kepler’s Laws, Newtonian Gravitation, torque, angular momentum, density, pressure, buoyancy, fluids, vibrations, waves, simple harmonic motion, sound, doppler effect, standing waves.

Motivation for the goal: “since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” - Paul

Class activities: • Discuss and demonstrate concepts • Practice Problems

I expect students to: • Attend all of the classes, being careful to take notes and work through the

problems as we go • Do all of the homework

o Read sections of the text book as needed to understand concepts • Ask questions in class or in the study sessions or in my office as needed • Be honest.

Labs: • Physics is the study of our physical surrounds. Lab is where you get to interact

with those physical surroundings and really see, touch, and smell physics happening - in many cases, it is where physics is best learned.

• Your lab portion of the grade is a straight average of all of the labs that you do over the course of the semester.

• One missed lab means a zero for all of the labs!

Homework: • All homework questions will be assigned on Enhanced Web Assign (EWA). • The average of your homework scores will be worth 10% of your final grade. • Homework is posted on EWA • EWA gives you 5 chances to get the answer right. The following pointers will

help: o EWA likes 3 sig figs (yes, it is arbitrary). o Carefully notice the units. o “Blah, blah, blah” will work for paragraph type answers. o Multiple guessing sometimes works but is not recommended.

• Homework is open book, open ‘class formula sheet,’ open friend, open web, open calculator, whatever.

• Be mindful of learning to swim.

Quizzes • Quizzes will be worth 5% of your final grade. • There is one quiz posted on EWA corresponding to each chapter • Each quiz will be between 1 and 5 questions, and will cover part of the material

discussed during that chapter. • You can start the quizzes as soon as you are ready, but you must finish before the

due date. EWA will start the timer as soon as you open the quiz, so don’t open it unless you are ready to start!

• Quizzes are open ‘class formula sheet,’ ‘unit conversion sheet,’ and calculator. Closed everything else.

• You will have 2 chances per question.

Tests • There will be two tests: 10/1 and 11/12 at 5:00 in 116 Richardson. • There will be partial credit given, so please clearly show your work on clean

printer paper -- start a new page with every problem. o Please put a box around your final answers.

• Tests are open ‘class formula sheet,’ ‘unit conversion sheet,’ and calculator. Closed everything else.

Final Exam • The final exam will be on 12/14 at 1:30 PM in our classroom • The final exam is comprehensive, you will be given the full 3 hours to take the

exam. • There will be partial credit given, so please clearly show your work on clean

printer paper -- start a new page with every problem. o Please put a box around your final answers.

• Tests are open: ‘class formula sheet,’ and calculator. Closed everything else.

The Other Obvious Stuff: • Frequently answers to homework questions may be found on-line. It is not in

your best interest to use these solutions for two reasons: o It prevents you from learning the material (learn to swim). o Those solutions are frequently wrong.

• Working and studying together is encouraged and frequently necessary on homework.

• Working together on tests and quizzes is not honest and is not allowed.

Overall Class Grade: • You can calculate your current class grade with the excel spreadsheet provided on

my website.

• Then click “Enroll” • Use an existing WebAssign username and password (you may have one from

another class or even from high school), or create a new one. • You can then purchase access on the WebAssign site, or enter your access code

that you may have purchased from the bookstore, or work for within the ‘grace period’.

• WebAssign will keep track of your homework, and quiz scores.
