* * *THE LATE DR HENRI CHATELLIER, PARIS.

Born at Lisieux in Normandy, in June 1855, Henri Chatellier studiedmedicine in Paris. Attracted by the busy life of the capital, he resolvedto remain there and to specialise as an obstetrician ; but after acceptingan offer of work with Gouguenheim and later with Hutinel, he commencedthe study of Diseases of the Throat and Ear.

In 1888, he wrote his Thesis on Adenoid Tumours of the Pharynx, andthen proceeded to Vienna to study under Politzer, Chiari and Schnitzler, and in Prague under Zaufal. In 1890, Chatellier established a departmentof Otology and Laryngology at the Hopital St Joseph. Amongst hischief contributions to the literature of the specialty were his papers onthe Histology of the Nasal Mucous Membrane, on the TopographicalAnatomy of the Middle Ear, and on the Bacteriology of Middle-earSuppuration.

Chatellier had many interests outside the sphere of his profession.Music had a special attraction for him, and he was the means of introducingto the notice of the public many musicians, both composers and performers.During the active years of his life he was greatly interested in thedevelopment of sport.

The Editors of the Journal desire to express their indebtedness to, andtheir appreciation of, the work of Dr Douglas Guthrie and the staff ofcollaborators, in the voluntary assistance which they have given throughoutthe year in the preparation of abstracts of current medical literaturedealing with the specialty.
