No deadlines

Not a competition (~95% success rate)

Quality research (peer review)

Simple forms, we help with the paperwork

Applied research collaboration via 1 or more professors

Research undertaken by Graduate students or Post-docs with a partner in Canada (50% time on-site)*

Scalable: From 1 intern at 4 months ….. to a team over several years

Foreign students & Post-Docs are eligible. Can use to recruit later

ALL research areas are supported

What is an Accelerate project?

www.mitacs.ca

8

Scalability: build large-scale projects

Can build bigger projects from simple 4 month units

First 1 to 5 internship units: industry funding matched 1:1

Higher Mitacs matching available with bigger projects

Projects can be multi-disciplinary (and multi-partner)

= 4 months

1 intern & prof

www.mitacs.ca

9

Funding model

Standard: 1-5 internships Cluster: 6 or > internships & 3 or > interns

Funds sent to university to cover intern stipends + research costs (e.g. reagents, supplies)

www.mitacs.ca

10

Mitacs Accelerate Partners

A Company / business of any size with offices or facilities in Canada where intern can spend 50% time on-site

Eligible organisations may also include:

• Some Crown Corporations / Utilities • First Nations Development Corporations • Consultants • Private clinics

*New*: Non-profit (non-government) organisations also eligible

• Non-profits, or foundation / charities (as legal status) • Project must have demonstrable economic impact

Not eligible: municipalities, hospitals, government agencies

Unsure? Please ask us

www.mitacs.ca

11

How it works

1) Partner has a problem that needs research to solve it I. Project spans 4 months (or multiples thereof) II. Opportunity for intern to spend time onsite

2) Professor identified I. Manages grant II. Oversees the Grad student

3) Grad student identified (non-Canadians eligible)

I. Prepares proposal (with prof + partner, we can look over) II. Will undertake the research (including time onsite)

4) Proposal submitted for peer-review

I. No deadlines, not a competition

www.mitacs.ca

12

Timeline

No deadlines to apply but ….

1) May need to factor in time to discuss (prof, student, partner)

2) Time to prepare the proposal (exchange drafts, agree, sign-off)

3) Review (typically up to 6 weeks, reviewers may need more info)

4) Funds to be in place (partner->Mitacs-> university account)

Ideally plan 3 months ahead from when all parties agree to collaborate
