A Note from KarlaHPNA President

Hollywood Park is truly a great neighborhood full of character, charm and most importantly, neighbors who care about one another. In my short tenure in the ‘hood (almost 3 years!), I have had the pleasure of meeting so many neighbors who make HP friendly and homey by bringing in garbage bins for others, helping out with home repairs, hosting dinners and more. I would like to specifically call out the great work of Pat Pederson and Irene Wilson who have done a lot for the neighborhood: organizing socials to coordinating the newsletter deliveries and our famous holiday bows and beyond. After this term, they have decided to not re-run

for a position on the board of directors. We cannot thank them enough for their dedication and hard work for our neighborhood. Though in 2014 they won’t be on the board, they will still be involved in the various committees they belong to. But there is a silver lining in all of this - we will have board positions open for next year, so if you would like to get involved, now is your time.

-Karla

We Need You!!! by Irene Wilson

Elections for our new Board of Directors will be

held at the Holiday Social December 11th, 2013.

Directors are elected to a two year term and it is

their job to oversee all the activities of HPNA.

There are five open positions to be filled. We need

applicants who are interested in keeping HPNA a dynamic organization which

provides events that are enjoyed by residents of all ages and interests.

I have been on the Board for ten years and

consider it a great way to have served my com-

munity and develop friendships with a fantastic

group of neighbors. Please contact Karla Fung at

[email protected] if you are interested in more

information about the elections.

A Note from KarlaHPNA PresidentHello Hollywood Park!

Happy summer neighborhors! These last few months have been quite busy around Hollywood Park and surrounding areas. We hosted a District 5 Candidate Meet & Greet in May to get to know our candidates, Ali Cooper and Jay Schenirer, a bit better. It was a small but mighty show-ing and we served some good old fashioned pie and milk.

Did you get a chance to catch any of the Sacramento Republic FC games at Hughes Stadium? Lots of fun and it was great to see so many HP-ers walking over to Sac City College for the games. The team will be moving locations however to their new home at Bonney Field in mid to late June so that will cut down on some traffic in the Carlton Tract area.

Summer is a fun time in our neighborhood - school is out, there’s less traffic on the streets, lots of great events (more on that in the newsletter) and more. Just a friendly reminder to keep an eye on our neighborhood schools when you are taking your dogs out for a walk. We are their eyes and ears! Also, don’t forget to pick up after your pooch. We are getting reports of a lot of “unclaimed property” on school grounds. Let’s be responsible neighbors and keep our neighborhood nice.

See you around the neighborhood! - Karla

Hollywood Park Business Briefs by Greg Brown If you’re looking for cool vinyl records or used CD’s Phono Select Records in Hollywood Park is the place to go. They also buy vinyl, CD’s and cassettes. They’re one of our newest business members. They’re located at 4370 24th St in Unit O. Look for the big blue building! www.phonoselect.com

Another new Hollywood Park business member is John McGraw’s Pocket Club at 5043 Freeport Blvd. It’s an old-school friendly neighborhood bar where you can watch the ballgame or plunk a few quarters in the jukebox. Order a PBR Tallboy and play shuffleboard with a group of friends while The Rolling Stones echo through The Pocket Club. I was recently at their annual chili cook-off for charity and the place was packed with Hollywood Park locals having a great time.

Angel Pet Care has also become an HP business member. It’s a great alternative to kennels. Joanna Witt is a new Hollywood Park resident and the owner of Angel Pet Care. She’ll be your personal pet sitter and give your animals the TLC they need while you’re away. For more info: www.angelpetcare.com

Good brew news to report! Fountainhead Brewing Company will be coming to Hollywood Park on 24th Street. It will be occupying the TS Auto Repair Shop building sometime in July. One of the owners, Daniel Moffatt told me , “We’re very excited about coming to the neighborhood”. They’ll be brewing some Imperials, Porters, IPA’s, belgiums, barley wines, and sours too. So like the neighborhood, the craft beer selection at Fountainhead will be eclectic. In the back of the property there’s a spot where they’ll have cool outdoor seating and a pergola where people can gather together and sip the suds of their favorite local new brewery. It will be family friendly as well as dog friendly. They will also be serving food.

Congratulations to Hollywood Hardware and J Crawford’s Books. Both Hollywood Park businesses were voted number 1 on KCRA’s A-List. Hollywood Hardware won for Best Housewares and J Crawford Books got the top nod for Best Bookstore. They’re both Hollywood Park business members, too.

Biz News Enjoy the Holidays

By John C. ReigerBusiness Committee

The holidays are upon us, actually have been with us for some time. Halloween has come and gone. Now it’s the season for giving thanks. And Christmas is staring at us from every shop window. Personally, I like all the holidays (let’s not forget Hanukkah, Eid, Kwanza, etc.). They get us out of our little ruts and away from our worries for a while.

When you are in the mood for gifting those precious friends and family members, I hope you won’t forget the local merchants who have some great gifts waiting for your selection. Of course, there are the obvious ones like Hollywood Hardware for useful stuff (but they have trinkets too), Crawford’s for the readers (and viewers), Panama Pottery for ceramics and sculpture, and classy gifts at Collected Works. And for those with special interests and talents we have Kline’s Music, Grip’s Fast Golf, and Land Park Ski & Sports.

But who says a gift has to be stuff? Maybe some music for your event, an oil and lube for your car, a few lessons in Aikido, or a new frame for that special family photo. Or even some new family photos by Eleakis & Elder Photography. Some of our business members can help with any of these non-traditional gifts. Check out the list and shop locally - save the gas money and travel time.

Hollywood Hardware’s manager Susan Reynolds excitedly told me, “We really have the nicest most faithful customers and we’re just very proud to be a service to everyone”.

I asked Joyce Crawford of Crawford’s Books if she had a speech prepared and she told me they “whooped it up”. She added, “We were so happy, it was fantastic. It’s our second year and it was really great”. They even beat out Barnes & Nobles which prompted Jim Crawford to say, “We beat Goliath”.

Yardcore Invades Hollywood Park by Greg Brown

The DIY Network’s Yardcore set its sight on Hollywood Park....again! Yardcore and Yard Crashers have both in-vaded our neighborhood to produce their home improve-ment shows on numerous occasions. There have been so many episodes filmed in our neighborhood I’ve actually lost count and so have the producers. Hollywood Park is a big DIY destination!Chop saws, sandblasters, compressors and a Bobcat lit-tered the front yard of the home on Irvin Way. An army of workers were furiously moving rocks, dirt, and mulch in big blue wheelbarrows all in the name of showbiz.

When I spoke with host Jake Moss I asked why Yardcore chooses a lot of homes in the area to create their back-yard makeovers. Moss said, “We love coming into old neighborhoods like Hollywood Park, Land Park, Curtis Park. They all have houses with character.” Jake added, “You’re working with more eclectic styles when you’re dealing with these neighborhoods, they’re not cookie cutter.”

To learn more about being on Yardcore or Yard Crashers, check out www.bigtablemedia.com. They are the local Sacra-mento production company that produces the shows.

Joel and Jake Moss, hosts of DIY’s Yardcore, stand outside a Hollywood Park backyard getting an incredible makeover.

The Heat Is On!

We dogs love to go where you go, but leav-ing us in a hot car “just for a minute” can be a fatal mistake! A little heat outside a car can quickly make it very hot inside. For exam-ple, on a warm day of 85 degrees, keeping the windows slightly open won’t stop the inside temperature from climbing to 102 degrees in 10 minutes, and to 120 degrees in 20 minutes. A dog whose body temperature rises to 107-108 degrees will within a very short time suffer irreparable brain damage – or even death.

We also have a tough time walking on hot pavement! If it hurts your bare feet, it will hurt our paw pads too!

If you see a dog left in a hot car, please call 911! Animal abuse can be a felony in California. Take the pledge and spread the word! Please don’t ever leave us in the car.

This information was taken from Redrover.org and more information and flyers can be downloaded at their website or Facebook page.

Enjoy your COOL dog and have a great summer!

Greetings Friends and Neighbors!

We have had such a fabulous year learning, working, and playing! However, our staff and students are definitely ready for a summer break. Our last day of school is June 12th. Our campus will be closed all summer but we will have district staff putting on a new roof. Hopefully they won’t be too noisy! Our office will re-open August 5th and our little ones will be back in classrooms on Septem-ber 2nd. We still have space in Kindergarten if you are looking for an outstanding education for your child. Enrollment can be done at the Serna Center. We will miss you all while we’re gone and hope to see you at the big Movie Night in September. As always, take good care of our little school.
