Introduction exercises - text Main Character of this lesson

Erica, a 7 year old girl dressed in a black witch costume.

Text Main Character Hi, my name is Erica and today is Halloween. Oh no! The trick or treaters are here. It sure is a lot of work counting out candy. Would you help me divide the candy between the four trick or treaters? (Four orange trick or treat bags appear on the screen and a pile of eight pieces of candy) We have eight pieces of candy that we must share with four trick or treaters. How are we going to divide the candy? (Erica pauses and looks up to at the sky like she’s thinking) I know! Let’s put the candy into four piles and each trick or treater will get two pieces of candy in their bag (Erica counts aloud one, two...then moves two pieces of candy to the right, then she counts aloud three, four...and moves two pieces of candy to the left, then she counts aloud five, six...and moves two pieces of candy to the bottom right and finally she counts aloud seven, eight...and moves the last two pieces of candy to the bottom left) Now we need to put the candy into the bags. Count with me. (Erica counts aloud one, two...then moves two pieces of candy into the first bag, then she counts aloud three, four...and moves two pieces of candy to the second bag, then she counts aloud five, six...and moves two pieces of candy to the third bag and finally she counts aloud seven, eight...and moves the last two pieces of candy to the fourth bag) Hooray! Each trick or treater got ¼ or one quarter of the candy.
