National Recognition and Honors New Mexico Spine and its physicians have received recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) via its Back Pain Recognition program for the superior care provided to patients with low back pain. The NCQA is a not-for-proft organization
dedicated to the improvement of healthcare quality nationwide by recognizing physicians who take a patient-centered approach and deliver patient care in accordance with widely-accepted, evidence based guidelines.
Our spines run from the base of our brains to our tailbone, conveying neural messages to our body while granting us so many of the physical activities we often take for granted. Comprised of a series of 33 small bones called vertebrae, our spines grant us stability, flexibility, movement and weight support. The vertebrae are separated by thin layers of cartilage and supported by a system of muscles and ligaments that assist with spinal motion.
Although it works as an integrated unit, the spine is made up of three segments: The first seven joints that run from the base of the skull through the top of the spine is the upper (Cervical) spine. Next are 12 vertebrae that run along the middle (Thoracic) spine, followed by five more vertebrae that make up the lower (Lumbar) spine.
The spine’s importance cannot be overstated, which is why New Mexico Orthopedics has proudly dedicated an entire multi-disciplinary team approach to the treatment of spinal injuries and conditions.
