Welcome to St. Nicholas Catholic Church!

"They all ate and were satisfied." Why read the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves this Sunday? Here we see the mystery of our physical and spiritual realities intermingling. Too often, they can feel separate. When we go to Mass, how often we appear more ordinarily human rather than stretching toward the divine. Perhaps our experience of the Eucharist is fairly mundane. We notice when a new sacramental wine has been selected. We feel the varying textures of the host and wonder if they'll ever bring back the one that tasted distinctly like wheat. As we shuffle up to the front and stride back to our pew, we notice the looks on people's faces and the clothes on their backs. We get distracted by the crying child, the man blowing his nose, and the mechanical sound of the air conditioner kicking in. How human we are, how earth-bound, how material! And how good God is for entering into these selfsame realities. How good God is for proclaiming "the kingdom of God," for "heal[ing] those who needed to be cured," for having mercy on a tired and hungry crowd. How many of the crowd noticed what had been done for them? Did they realize their dinner was a miracle? How often do we miss the deeper reality of the Eucharist? Even if in the moment of receiving Communion we don't experience radical ecstasy and don't feel any different, there is a tangible reality to cling to. Our God loves us enough to become bread for us, not only to feed us but to be fed upon by us.

THE CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION: A CATHOLIC TRADITION Processing through the community with the Blessed Sacrament on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) is a venerable Church tradition. The procession is an outward demonstration

of Catholic faith and belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This is the foundation and source of our faith and will help us to grow in our devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and life of the church. The Solemnity of Corpus Christi was introduced in the late 13th century to honor Our Lord's institution of the Most Holy Eucharist. It is believed Corpus Christi Processions date back to the 14th century. They are still held on the Feast of Corpus Christi throughout the world. The procession is made up of clergy, lay people and their families. The Most Holy Eucharist is held in a processional monstrance carried by a priest or bishop. The monstrance itself is protected by a decorated canopy. In his Apostolic Letter Mane nobiscum Domine, Saint John Paul II urged all Catholics to participate in Corpus Christi Processions as a public profession of their faith in the real presence of Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament. I invite you to participate in the Corpus Christi Procession immediately following the 10 o’clock Mass on Sunday, June 23. - Fr. Barnes

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTION RESULTS We welcome Greg Fischer, Dan Simones, and LouAnn Wagner to the Parish Pastoral Council. Congratulations and thank you for your interest in helping St. Nicholas move forward in our mission to make Jesus known and loved. We also thank Shawn Overgaard, Bob Hilpisch, and Dywane Schumacher for their time served on the PPC.

Thank you, volunteers, for all your hard work with the Chicken Cookout. Thank you also to those who donated items. An event like this is very important on many levels for our parish community. It is a time to have fun, a time to enjoy some excellent chicken, a time to get to know each other better and form lasting friendships, and it is a time to meet and once again invite visitors to become active members of the parish and intentional disciples of Jesus Christ. The Chicken Cookout, in addition to being an impressive community gathering, is a tool for us to move forward in our mission of making Jesus known and loved. Thank you! Final numbers for the Chicken Cookout will be in the bulletin in the next few weeks.

Volunteer Catechists and aides NEEDED: Please discern your call to help your parish by passing on the faith through teaching. We do have several openings in different grades including group leaders to help in the Confirmation classrooms.

I am inviting men and women of the parish to seriously consider being a part of this vital ministry to the life of our Catholic faith and parishes as we pass on the faith and prepare our students for a sacramental life. If you are interested in learning more about teaching, co-teaching, or being a classroom aide, please contact Kathy Chlan @ [email protected] or call at 952-652-6100 ext. 130. You do not need to have children in the program to help teach or aide in classrooms.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS When I was a child, I can remember stopping by my parish or another local Catholic church to just spend some time in prayer before the Holy Eucharist. We didn't have exposition and adoration much in those days, but we were keenly aware of the presence of Jesus in the tabernacle. I would sometimes stare at the lighted candle near it and know that Jesus was alive. I had never heard someone speak about a stewardship way of life back then. If I am honest, the primary message I heard in those days was along the lines of "We need to be as good as we are able." Sacrifice was only at Lent, disciples were people in the Bible, and generosity mostly had to do with the collection basket and the poor box at the church entrance. I even went to Catholic schools! Maybe the message of stewardship was there somewhere packaged differently, and I just missed it. It wasn't until I was an adult, and after acquiring two theology degrees, that I understood both with my head and my heart what a stewardship way of life really meant. But I look back at those days, and I realize that the groundwork was laid for me to understand these things. It was those times before the Holy Eucharist that I began to understand true sacrifice. It was at those times that I began to understand how actions and realities that seem so simple to the human eye can be so profound. And it was at those times that I began to see true love knows no bounds.

WHY DO WE DO THAT?

CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: How do you explain "Real Presence" to children. Answer: The first Communion class is filled with excitement to the point of bursting! They are just awestruck by every new thing they learn about Jesus. Their enthusiasm is contagious as they rattle off the names of the things in church, the vessels and vestments used at Mass, and the names of their pastors and priests. Of course, they know Christ can do anything because he's God. He comes to us in holy Communion because he loves us so much that he wants to be with us. And he comes to us in the form of bread and wine. We really receive him in the Eucharist. Sometimes it is easier to explain this to children than to adults. Their faith and trust in Jesus is not limited by the questions and doubts that often come with the question of how he does it. Rather, they focus on the question "why," and the answer is something they can easily grasp: love. Christ wants to be with us because he loves us. Nothing is purer in truth or in faith. Not even the theological explanation of transubstantiation, or philosophical reasoning or symbolic references, come close. Christ takes on the form of bread and wine to be simple and approachable, so that no one is afraid or turned away. His love for us is complete and total. We try to love him the same way in return. For a child, it is simple. For us adults, we keep trying. "Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven" (Mt 18:3).
