General Informa,on: Striped skunks (Mephi0s mephi0s) are the skunk species commonly found around homes. These mammals are well known for the pungent liquid that they produced and use it as a self-defense mechanism from predators. The liquid is an oily, yellow sulfur-alcohol compound that contains sulfuric acid that is stored in two separate scent glands located on each side of the anus and can be sprayed accurately at targets as far as 6 to 10 feet away. Habitat: The striped skunk can be found from the southern half of Canada to the northern parts of Mexico, covering most of the con0nental United States. Skunks are extremely adaptable and thrive in many different habitats. They live in burrows that they find or they dig their own. In urbanized areas, they live under porches or buildings. Skunks will typically seLle down within 2 miles of a water source. . Iden,fica,on: All skunks have a triangular shaped heads with an elongated body that has short legs and sharp non-retractable claws. What differen0ates striped skunks from other skunk species is the unique striping on its back. Their fur is mostly black with a white stripe that starts narrow from the forehead, then widens star0ng from the neck and splits into a fork towards the tail. Fun Facts: Favorite foods: beetles, grasshoppers, bird eggs, grubs, earthworms, small rodents, fruits and berries, frogs, and mushrooms. Life span: Average life = 2-3 years. 7 years in the wild.
