With two of the three Tyler County Dogwood Festival Weekends successfully behind us, everyone is looking forward to this weekend when the Queen’s Weekend crowns the entire Festival. Woodville is the place to be Saturday, April 2. Plan to get up early for the Fun Run and stay up late for the Queen’s Pageant. Queen’s Weekend is the original event, the one the Dogwood Festival was built on. And, this the 68th time Tyler County has celebrated

Tyler County Dogwood Festival Queen’s Weekend is Saturday

this weekend. The fun starts at 8 a.m. in front of Kirby Gym, 505 N. Charlton, with the Dogwood Dash. Watch for the runners as they weave through the streets of Woodville during this 5K run. Don’t head home after the run, though, because there will be booths filled with arts and crafts and lots of good food set up around town. The booths open at 9 a.m. and stay open until 5 p.m.

If you like classic and antique cars, or motor-cycles, be sure to check out the exhibition set up by Courthouse square in Woodville. There are always lots of beautifully restored autos to drool over. The Queen’s Parade starts at 2 p.m. and travels through downtown Woodville. It is filled with beautiful floats, antique cars, motorcycles, visit-ing royalty, marching bands and lots more. The highlight of the day, though, is the

Queen’s Coronation and Historical Play pre-sented in Dogwood Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. The elaborate set is draped with hundreds of handmade flowers. Visiting Duchesses will take the stage, along with the Children’s Court, Ladies-In-Waiting and, finally, the Princesses. One of the five Princesses, representing five cities in Tyler County, will be crowned Dog-wood Queen. The Historical Pageant will follow.

Even though the current year has not closed the books yet, eyes are already focused on what the next year will have in store. With the addition of new Athletic Director, Coach Fancy Johnson, in January and the recent an-nouncement of Head Girls Coach, Reagan Sewell leav-ing for a position at Gary ISD, things will definitely look different for the 2012-2013 school year. Asked about his thoughts on the Bulldog Athletic Program for the upcoming school year, Johnson said, “We have nowhere to go but up. We’re going to have a sense of pride. I have ex-pectations of pride from the ground up.” Johnson said the students have bought into his philosophy of hard work, leadership and team-work. “My definition of ‘team’ is something bigger than myself. I stress this to my athletes,” said Johnson. He went on to say, “I also tell them that leaders aren’t just made, they are devel-

We will continue to work on leadership in the upcoming year.” He will serve as head football coach next year, and the plan is to have a total of six coaches on the field. Johnson explained, “Six coaches are normal for a football program the size of Colmesneil.” At the last school board meeting, the board voted to hire Daniel Veirs, from White Oak, Texas, as a defensive coordinator to add to the program next year. Another change in the works for the next year is to have each sport have one head coach and an assistant. Currently, there are programs that have one coach coaching three sports without an assistant; for example, the girls’ program has one coach, Sewell, coaching all of their sports: volleyball, basketball and softball, without an assistant. “That will change in the upcom-ing year. Each sport will have a head coach and an assistant,” said Johnson. As stated previously, Sewell will not be returning to coach the Lady Bulldogs in

the 2012-2013 school year. “I’m leaving Colmesneil and going to Gary ISD for personal reasons,” stated Sewell. “I’m going to miss this program, this school and this community,” he went on say. Superintendent Stacy Ackley was also asked about the changes. “Honestly, I would like to see the program, boys and girls, compete for cham-pionships year to year, in everything we do.” He went on to say, “For more in-depth details on how the athletic program will work, you really need to talk to Coach Johnson. “ Ackley was asked specifically to respond to the commu-nity’s recent questioning of his decision to hire “out of town people” with the hiring of Coach Johnson. “I’m going to look to hire the most qualified teachers and coaches; those who bring the most to the kids of our district. I don’t think parents would have it any other way,” said Ackley. “With that being said,” he went on to say, “If the applicant is a hometown

applicant, we are always going to look at hometown people first. I do believe in taking care of our patrons here. But the bottom line is we still have to hire the best person for the job; the one who brings the most to our kids.” Johnson said he thinks the athletes are accepting him now as a part of the CISD athletic program. He is beginning to settle into Colmesneil. “I’m happy here,” he said. “I see me staying here for a while,” he went on to say. When asked about setbacks since com-ing to Colmesneil, Johnson said, “I can’t remember one day. I love it here.” Johnson plans to incor-porate a six-week summer workout plan for the stu-dents to keep them ready for the new year and a mini football camp for the future Bulldogs. The coaches and direction of the girls’ ath-letic program is still being worked out. Johnson said, “Colmesneil is a great place. I believe in hard work. I’m teaching the students, ‘you’ve got to learn to be tough to be successful’.”

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month Monday, April 9, Judge Jacques L. Blanch-ette and the Tyler County Commissioners will proclaim April as Child Abuse Preven-tion Month in Tyler County. As part of the emphasis on child abuse prevention, there are several activities that members of the Tyler County Child Welfare Board have planned during the month of April. Youth members from Bethel Baptist Church in Warren have erected 231 blue crosses that represent the number of chil-dren who died in Texas last year as a result of child abuse. The crosses are located on Highway 190 by the Hennigan Ballpark. Cody Haygood, member of Boy Scouts, earned a Citizenship Badge by construct-ing and painting 50 crosses for this project.Wednesday, April 11, is “Go Blue Day” across Texas. On that day, please wear a blue shirt, dress, tie or ribbon to raise awareness of child abuse.

Blue is the international symbol for Child Abuse Prevention. The color blue was cho-sen to represent the bruised and battered bodies of the thousands of children that are abused every day. It serves as a constant reminder that all of us have a responsibil-ity to help keep children safe. Protecting children should be the mission of everyone in our county.“Blue Sunday” is Sunday, April 29. This is the National Day of Prayer for victimsof child abuse. Gwen Barnett, 81, passed away March 28, 2012, in Baytown,

Texas. S h e w a s born to Joseph a n d L o i s P a t -t e r son on De-cember 2 3 , 1930 in

Canadian, Texas.  Gwen was raised in Highlands, Texas, and graduated from R.E. Lee in 1950.  She married James Barnett in 1950, and they raised their family in Baytown, Texas, before retiring to Woodville.  Gwen retired from Kmart and was a VFW Post 912 and VFW Post 2033 member, a member of the Camp Ground Baptist Church and an Eastern Star member.Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers, Joseph and Charles Patterson.

Jessie Jim Sullivan, 62, of Doucette, Texas passed away

M a r c h 31, 2012. B o r n August 9, 1949, in San Au-gustine, Texas, to Jim Byrd Sullivan and Ben-nie Jean Lacy Sul-

livan, he lived in Tyler County for many years. He was a retired Crane Operator for Wyatt. He was a loving son, father, grand-father and brother.

Lois Jean Harrison Fortenberry, 58, of Woodville passed away March 31, 2012. Born November 17, 1953, in Woodville, Texas to Edward and Evelyn Elam Harrison, she lived in Wo o d -ville all of her life. She was a loving mother, g r a n d -mother, sister and f r i e n d w h o loved the outdoors and spending time with her family. She had worked at the Tyler County Clerk’s office and the Tyler County Abstract office. She is survived by her chil-dren, Charles Spurlock of Colmesneil, William Spurlock of Jasper and Hannah Woods of Fort Worth; brothers, Eddy L. Harrison of Woodville, James L. Harrison of Woodville and Robert D. Harrison of Wood-ville; sisters, Sandra J. Wheeler of Aurora, Colo., and Mary A. Poncho of Woodville; step-children, Bryan Thomas and Tracy Miller, both of Houston; special friend, Danny Gilbert of Woodville; thirteen grand-children and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Apr i l 5, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Riley Fu-neral Home Chapel with Dr. Raymond Parker officiating. Mary Elizabeth Bigby, 80, of Chester passed away March 30, 2012. Born October 1, 1931, in Ches-ter, Texas to Carr and Nettie Neal Barnes, she was a life-l o n g r e s i -dent of C h e s -ter. He was a proud parent, a much loved friend, and a well-respected member of his community. A member of Hilltop Baptist Church, he was a man of unwav-ering faith who will be missed always, and forever remembered in the hearts and minds of those whose lives he touched. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 29, at 9 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Colmesneil with burial in Colmesneil Cemetery. Of-ficiating was Brother David Miller. Serving as pallbearers were Kirby McCord, Conner McCord, Skeeter Lee, Aaron Lee, Troy Allison and Vince Poston. Visitation was also held on Thursday at 8 a.m. until service time at 9 a.m. at the church. Geraldine was born Septem-ber 10, 1925 to Odie and Lottie Cherry Ellerbee in Orange, Texas. She was a devoted wife and mother who always put others first. She was a mem-ber of First Baptist Church of Colmesneil. She was preceded in death by her parents, Odie and Lottie Ellerbee, and her sister, Jeneva Griffith. Lewis Fitzgerald Lewis Calvin Fitzgerald 71, of New Caney,Texas, formerly of Colmesneil, went home to be with his loving Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 1. Lewis was born April 28, 1940, in San Augustine,Texas to Elton Teel and Emma Mae (Graham) Fitzgerald. Lewis was a member of First Baptist Church, Colmesneil, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army. Lewis was preceeded in death by his parents; son, Bryan Teel Fitzgerald; mother of his old-est two children Barbara Ann (Palmer) Fitzgerald. Four brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law; and, mother-in-law Dorothy Caldwell. Lewis is survived by his lov-ing wife of 28 years Susan Ann (Carnley) Fitzgerald. Daugh-ter and son-in-law Gwindalen (Gwin) Lea (Fitzgerald) and Januario (Chico) Fuentes of Jasper,Texas; and Deborah Jean Fitzgerald and Kalaab Taylor of New Caney, Texas. Lorine Cecil Mulheron John-son, 86, of Colmesneil, Texas, and a former resident of Port Arthur, passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at her home. She was born on November 5, 1925 to Ameait and William Mulheron in Port Arthur. She lived in Port Arthur for most of her life before moving to Colmesneil in 1985. Lorine retired as a school bus driver for the Port Arthur Independent School District after 17 years. She was a former member of the St. James Catholic Church. Visitation was held on Tues-day, April 3, 2012, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., with a vigil service at 6 p.m. in the Thompson Memorial Chapel at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2012, in the Thompson Me-morial Chapel with Deacon Dallas Broussard officiating. Interment followed in Green-lawn Memorial Park. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Theriot. She is survived by her hus-band, Joseph E. AUSTIN — Through the Texas Women’s Health Program, some 130,000 uninsured, low-income women ages 18 to 44 are pro-

vided with family planning exams, basic essential health screenings and birth control through Medic-aid funding that is 90 percent federal and 10 percent state. On March 31, the program will lose its fed-eral funding if the state of Texas and

the federal government don’t work out related issues that have become heavily politicized. Federal and state law currently prohibit the funding of abortion services except in cases of rape, incest or life endangerment, but the state of Texas recently applied for a waiver of federal rules in hopes of operating the Women’s Health Program in a way that complies with a state law passed last year that eliminates abortion providers and their affiliates as qualified providers of the other women’s health services. But the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services did not express any inten-tion to grant a waiver that would allow the

State, feds in standoff over women’s health programstate to pick and choose among qualified providers. Gov. Rick Perry reacted, saying it is his intent to protect women’s health, but not to allow the Obama administration to violate “states’ rights” by blocking the enforcement of a Texas law. And Perry said the Texas Health and Human Services Commission “cannot ignore state law and allow taxpayer funds to be awarded to entities that perform or promote elective abortions or affiliate with entities that perform or promote elec-tive abortions.” Perry mentioned Planned Parenthood in his statement.State Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, in a March 6 news release, responded to Perry’s statements, saying nearly half of the program’s clients receive services through Planned Parenthood, an organization that does not provide abortions at Women’s Health Program clinics. On March 9, the non-profit, non-partisan Center for Public Policy Priorities in Austin released recommendations to the federal government and to the state. Here are ex-cerpts:-- “The federal government should not flinch from strict enforcement of the fed-eral law guaranteeing women freedom of choice in selecting their providers. If the state implements its rule excluding Planned Parenthood, the federal government should end its participation in the Women’s Health Program immediately.”

-- “The state should return to the old rules for the Women’s Health Program, which ensured that no program dollars subsidized abortion directly or indirectly, but did not bar Planned Parenthood from participating in the program. Alternatively, the state should delay implementation of its new rule while it turns to the courts to establish its authority to exclude Planned Parenthood. If it wins its case, then it can implement its rule excluding Planned Parenthood without jeopardizing federal funding. If it loses its case, then the Legislature can decide whether it wishes to end the program or continue the program without federal funding.”

DPS issues travel caution

The Texas Department of Public Safety on March 6 urged students on spring break not to travel to Mexico. “Drug cartel violence and other criminal activity represent a significant safety threat, even in some resort areas,” said DPS chief Steve McCraw, who added, “The situation in Mexico today is significantly different than it was just a decade ago.” The DPS urged U.S. citizens living or traveling in Mexico to register with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate at https://travelreg-istration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/. “Judge. Make ‘em play fair.” Every 10 years or so, we can attribute that quote, or one very similar, to whatever political party is not in the majority (read: power) at the time the Texas Legislature begins its decennial redistricting brouhaha. You can substitute “mom” or “dad” for “judge” and you wouldn’t be able to distinguish be-tween the childish behavior of kids and state legislators. As a matter of fact, when it’s time for redistricting the state to create new “equal” in population districts for state representa-tives, state senators and federal legislative representatives, just count on whichever party isn’t in power filing a lawsuit to ensure “equal representation” in our law-making bodies. Filling legislative entities with a majority of your own political party is the largesse of winning the elections closest to time for redistricting. At the time of this writing, the process reads: Republican-dominated Texas Legislature redraws districts to favor GOP majority. Minorities yell ‘Unfair!” and complain they’re shortchanged by the redistricting process. GOP: “Harumph! Balderdash! And, that’s a lot of el toro poo-poo.” Minorities say, “Oh, yeah!” and file suit in federal court in Austin. GOP: “It’s a waste of taxpayers’ money and a waste of time.” Federal District Judge: “The court has re-drawn the Texas legislative districts.”

GOP: “Unfair!” and file an appeal. And, so it goes. By the time this all plays out, Texas taxpayers, nee voters, will have paid through the nose in more ways than one. First and foremost, redistricting in Texas is about one thing: preservation of the status quo of our elected representatives, as determined by the majority party of our elected representa-tives. Hmmm. For something that stirs up so much partisan vitriol, you’d think both sides would be seek-ing a sensible, sane and more practical way of establishing “equal representation” for Lone Star voters. But, noooo.... For years, more sensible and fair Texans and members of state government have tried to get fellow legislators to pass a law establishing a non-partisan redistricting commission, similar to Iowa. Again, the answer is a self-serving “no” from our miscreant representatives: “If you don’t play by my rules,” they seem to say, “then I’ll take my football and go home.” Inevitably, some woefully misshaped districts are the result. In mid-decade redistricting a few years ago, one district reached from The Wood-lands, just north of Houston, all the way across East Texas, to Jasper County. In the western segment of the district, there was a heavy Republican voter registration then eastward to less populous Jasper County, which had been a generally Democratic-trending area.

The district was drawn to create a heavy Republican advantage. The connecting strip between densely populated Mont-gomery County and sparsely pop-ulous Jasper County was so thin, it was prob-ably not much wider than the U.S. Highyway 190 right-of-way. That was pretty representative of the state-wide patterns of this redistricting makeover and it was orchestrated by a GOP congress-man from Sugar Land, Tom DeLay, he of the two left feet exhibition on TV’s Dancing with the Stars and of the political nickname The Hammer. What goes on and has for decades in Texas is the best possible argument for a redistricting commission, especially with the provision that no elected officials serve on the commission. Other states with such a commission have requirements that no district can be drawn in favor of any political party, an incumbent or any other person or group. They also provide that no district can be drawn with the purpose of either strengthening or diluting the voting strength of any minority trend or group. In Iowa, for instance, it is law that no data be provided to the commission that includes incumbents’ addresses, the political affiliation of registered voters, previous election results and demographic data other than population head counts. Alexander Hamilton Washington, a cousin of George Washington, cut a wide swath through Polk and San Jacinto counties before and after the Civil War, but finding any physical reminder of his 28 years in East Texas is almost impossible. Born in 1805 on a farm near Berryville in Virginia, Washington moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1838 to practice law while living with his sister, Mary Herbert Beazley and her family. When the Beazleys gave Washington money and land to invest in the Republic of Texas, he exchanged the property for the William Logan League, now in San Jacinto County, and took the title in his own name with the intention of giving the property to his sister. A will in 1860 established his intent. Settling at Drew’s Landing on the Trinity River in the 1840s, Washington developed one of the area’s largest plantations in a great horseshoe bend of the river. As he was building his home on the river, Washington also supervised the construction of a road from Drew’s Landing to Lynchburg, a shipping point on Galveston Bay, with the recognition that the export of cotton would stimulate East Texas’ economy. Washington’s home was similar to the plantation homes of the Old South. Enhancing the home’s beauty was a formal flower garden, a favorite hobby of Washington. As a lawyer, Washington had a large library filled with law books and two indoor bath-rooms with hot water furnished by a boiler, a rarity on the Texas frontier. The home also contained a room for his Coushatta Indian friends--who lived in a vil-lage on Washington’s plantation--with pictures of paintings of Indians and horses. The Coushattas’ customary dress of long deerskin shirts prompted riverboat travelers to call the place “Shirt Tail Bend.” Known for his eccentricity, Washington had a personal worth of almost $75,000 in real and personal property before the Civil War, but he was always behind in paying his taxes. There were rumors at Drew’s Landing that Washington, a bachelor, buried a large cache of gold on his plantation. Another story is that he lost his fortune in a New Orleans bank failure. When the Civil War erupted, Washington volunteered for service in 1862, and was com-missioned an aide under Major General John B. McGruder, commander of the military district of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Washington was assigned to supervise government works in a wide area of East Texas, to defend the lower valley of the Trinity River, and to enlist his Indian friends in the South’s war efforts. At the end of the war, Washington was nearly bankrupt and in declining health. Though he held 51 slaves in 1864, he had to take large loans after the war to keep his plantation in operation. Washington sold his plantation to William B. Denson, who moved into the house with Washington. In 1868 Washington wrote a will giving all of his assets to Denson in return for settlement of his debts. He died on June 30, 1868, and was buried in his flower garden. Denson disputed Wash-ington’s first will to his sister, but in 1873 she established that the will was valid. As the years passed, Washington’s grave was lost, but his descendants placed a tombstone in the Davidson Cemetery, near Drew’s Landing, defining his Confederate service. The passage of decades has left the cemetery unmarked, entangled in forest growth, and--like Washington’s final resting place--difficult to find. Patrol troopers on roadways during the spring break holiday period, March 10 to March 18. According to an agency news release, last year during the spring break enforcement period, the DPS made 1,266 DWI arrests, including 380 by troopers who were patrol-ling as a result of additional funding.

Jobless rate drops again

The Texas Workforce Commission on March 9 announced the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 7.3 per-cent in January, down from 7.4 percent in December. The 7.3 percent is Texas’ lowest unemployment rate since April 2009. By contrast, in January 2011, the state’s

Are you keeping your fingers crossed? S o f a r t h e weather has co-operated, and it has been a lovely spring for the Dogwood Fes-tival. With the Western Week-end behind us, we can now look forward to the Queen’s Week-end leading up to the crown-ing of the new

Dogwood Festival Queen. The candidates attended the Dinner on the Grounds and spoke to the at-tendees. They were all beautiful poised young women. I am glad I am not a judge! Vying for the crown are Meara Smith from Chester; Tiffany Waters from Colmesneil; Audrey Sisk from Spurger; Ashley Livingston, represent-ing Woodville; and Valerie Sisk who calls Warren home. The large court of Ladies-in –Waiting, visiting Duchesses, all the escorts, and Children of the Court will be included in the Dogwood Pageant held Saturday evening. After this weekend, this year will be chronicled in the pages of history, and next year their story will be on display

at Heritage Village. And speaking of the display, don’t forget that the Dogwood Festival ex-hibit is open for your pleasure in the exhibit room of the Gift Shop at the Village. The history of the Festival is portrayed in story and pictures. The display will remain up until the end of the month. With gas prices so high we are wait-ing to see if it will affect our school tours, but it seems that our senior and church tours haven’t been bothered, so that is good news. We have had many groups from the Houston and Beaumont areas come for a tour and lunch at the Pickett House. One of our docents is on hand to great each group and guide them on a personal tour. Thanks to our docents and demon-strators, who are on hand when these large groups arrive. We could not have such an outstanding program without them. If you have some time and would like to be part of this great group of volunteers, we are currently looking for a few more docents to join our group of volunteers. We offer “on the job training” under the supervision of an experienced docent. If you like work-ing with people and have a little spare time to offer, please call the Village at 283-2272 for further information. I’ve mentioned before that we keep

a running list of small maintenance items that need “someone” who has time. If you are handy with tools, like to work in flower beds, can operate a broom, etc., please call the Village at 283-2272 to volunteer. The best part of this “job” is that you determine the time and day you are willing to work and will know that you are doing a great service. What a deal! As you begin to think about Easter, we have items that would be great in baskets including our small toys and the special sugar eggs that are truly works of art. We also have a good selection of the dogwood pattern in pewter that makes a great gift. How about a piece for your favorite princess or other member of the court as a reminder of their special event? Shop early. The Pickett House and Heritage Vil-lage will be closed on Easter Sunday so that our employees can have time with their families on this special day. We will be open on Saturday, the 7th, and will reopen on Monday, the 9th.

Sales tax revenue increases

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs on March 7 announced state sales tax revenue collec-tions in February were $2.01 billion, up 14.8 percent compared to February 2011. And, Combs said, March local sales tax allocations totaling $473.6 million will be sent to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts. The amount is 9.3 percent greater than allocations sent out in March 2011.

What Happens After Easter?By: Keith Bellamy

When I was growing up Easter was always a wonderful time. Not just for hunting eggs and not only for getting some extra candy with my Easter basket; we went to church to celebrate Christ’s resurrec-tion. Now in our fellowship we celebrate Christ’s resurrection every Sunday. But Easter was always good. Many in our country don’t emphasize the resurrection anymore because it is such a far out story. That’s true for the skeptic anyway. And so, I am writing today to those who hopefully believe in the resurrection.What happens after Easter? Does His resurrection make any differ-ence in your life? What gives you hope?Annette Funicello said, “Just because I’m in a wheel chair doesn’t mean I can’t have a wonderful life.” What a wonderful attitude! I wish all of us could develop such an attitude. She’s had to struggle with Mulitple Sclerosis now for many years. Just about every boy who grew up in the fifties loved Annette. She was my favorite Mouseketeer from the Mickey Mouse Club. But there is nothing ‘Mickey Mouse’ about this lady! She has set the standard for thse who struggle with M.S. She has hope.I was recently counseling someone who has an addiction to alco-hol. He had “fallen off the wagon”, and was trying to overcome this addiction once again. The person I was trying to help has a “Christ less” religion. He had bought into the philosophy that one can deliver “self” from substance abuse. However, I have never seen that happen. Christ’s way is the only Way. He is the only One Who promises hope. He is the only One who keeps His promises. I believe in Jesus’ promise in John 11:25, 26, “Jesus said to her,’ I am the resurrecion and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.’” Do you? Where do you place your hope?The greatest Giver, Who ever lived willingly gave His life so that you and I can have eternal life. While His gift is free, He made certain requirements for receiving that gift. We will have to come to Him on His terms. Will you?

Some people just seem to love to be negative. I have said for a long time that if you watch or listen to the news media you will become negative. You might even become cynical. I think both of these dispositions feed on one another. But what about being positive? I like to be around positive people. I know our Lord was positive. Many times we can read Matthew 23 and think He really came down on those people and He was negative. But notice His tenderness in Matthew 23:37. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.” The other day I ran into one of our church members and it was a blessing to me when he said “every day is good day.” And this brother had recently gone through some rough times. Yes, it’s hard to be positive when bad things happen but who is in control? My Christian brother knows.Are you a negative person or a positive person? The last week of Jesus’ life looked very nega-tive. However, our Lord knew there would be a positive outcome of His death. Our Savior knew Who was in control. He promised His followers an abundant life ( John 10:10). I believe this blessing from the Lord leads to a positive life.

I once had a friend named Joyce. She had two girls who were great softball players. My daughter was on their team. I didn’t get to the girls’ games because my son played baseball at the same time. Our family spent almost every day at the ballpark just for David’s games. Joyce thought I should be supporting the girls, so she spent a lot of time “recruiting” me. During that summer she and I became good friends. She wanted me into girls’ softball, and I wanted her into church—well, not just church, I wanted my friend Joyce to know Jesus Christ. It was hard to talk to Joyce because she was very religious. She was a good wife, great mother and a wonderful worker. If you wanted something done, Joyce was your girl. She thought all these good works would add up enough points for her ticket to heaven. It was easy to get Joyce to host a ladies luncheon and then a weekly Bible study in her home. She loved to entertain. One day I was impressed to give my friend a gift—a decoupage open book with the 23rd Psalm on one side and a picture of Jesus carrying a sheep on the other side. She loved the gift and put it on a table in her living room. Weeks went by and one day I received a phone call. Joyce was on the other end, crying and laughing and talking so fast I thought she’d lost it. Finally she said, “Just come over as soon as you can.” When I got to her house at the end of our street, Joyce was sitting on the couch holding the picture I had given her. Her eyes were sparkling with light as she blurted out, “I’m the lamb on His shoulder!” Together we laughed and cried as she related how the Holy Spirit had connected the dots for her using John 10:11. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” Joyce now believed Jesus gave His life-blood on the cross to pay the price for her sin. She gladly received Jesus as her personal Savior.

Woodville UMC Good Friday Service —Good Friday will be celebrated at Woodville United Methodist Church with a special service featuring Biblical people whose lives were changed by Jesus. These five people would likely have been in Jerusalem at the time of the crucifixion. They reflect on the death of Jesus and on how his life and love changed them. Madison Castillo is the woman who anointed Jesus, Duncan Parish plays Nicodemus, R. J. Gutierrez is the beggar born blind, Carley Smith plays Jairus’ daughter and Barbara Morris plays Martha, sister of Lazarus. The scenes were written and directed by Elizabeth Adkisson. The service begins Friday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.

The Spurger Pirate base-ball and softball teams faced Evadale on Wednesday, and came away with two tough losses. Even though both teams lost, they managed to keep their heads up and learn from their errors so that they can continue to improve. The softball team has had an amazing season so far, and knew that Evadale would be a tough team to beat. The game started out slow, with neither

team making any runs in the first inning. But, the second and third innings proved to be challenging for the Pirates, as Evadale quickly gained three runs, so the Pirates entered the fourth inning with a score of 3-0. The girls made some good hits in the top of the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the powerhouse Evadale team, and the top of the inning was ended be-fore the Pirates could gain any runs. The bottom of the fourth with the Rebels at bat

proved to be the toughest inning yet, with Evadale scor-ing four additional runs and racking up the score to 7-0. The top of the fifth inning was “make it or break it” for the Pirates, because if Evadale scored three more runs, the 10 run-rule would take effect and the game would be over. The girls battled it out at bat, and Skye Hutto managed to get a single, but 3 outs were made before a runner could come home. Going into the bot-tom of the fifth, the Pirates

knew it could be their last inning and made some great defensive plays, but good hitting on Evadale’s part and minor errors for the Pirates allowed the Rebels to score another four runs, bringing the score to 11-0, and end-ing the game for the Pirates. Although no score was made for the softball girls, McK-enzie McGallion performed excellently on the pitcher’s mound, and the infield made some great plays. The girls took the loss as a learning

experience, and are ready for the next game against High Island on March 30. The baseball boys also lost the game due to the 10-run rule in the fifth inning, but performed well when faced against such a large team as Evadale. Top scorers in the game were Hunter Smith with two runs and Mason Grey, Thomas Martin, John Smart, and Aaron Ford, who had one run each. Brett Bussel also managed to make the best play of the game with a grounder

to center field that brought three runners into home. The boys will play against West Hardin on Friday, March 30, and are keeping their heads up after a tough win.“We are learning from our mistakes, and every game will just get better,” said the players. Be sure to catch both teams games against West Hardin at home on Friday, March 30 at 4:30pm.

The Woodville Eagles Varsity Baseball team lost a tough contest Thursday, March 22, against the Central Heights Blue Devils at Humphrey Field with a score of 4-1. Torin Hickman took the loss on the mound, striking out 13 Blue Devils and giving up only two earned runs. The Eagles just could not get any offense going

against Blue Devil pitching. Woodville rebounded on Friday, March 23, when they traveled to Woden and gained a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Trent Daniels threw a complete game three-hitter to power the Eagles to victory. It was a tough night for the Woodville hitters, as they could only muster one run, but that was enough for Daniels.   On Tuesday, March 27, Wood-

ville got their fourth district win as they defeated the San Augus-tine Wolves by a score of 13-3. Chase Hensarling got the win on the mound, running his record to 3-1 on the year. The Eagles had 11 hits on the night, while Quade Allison drove in three runs with two hits to pace the Woodville team. The Eagles will be in action again Tuesday, April 3, at home

against the Hemphill Hornets at 7 p.m. at Humphrey Field. The team will then travel to Newton on Thursday, April 5, before playing at home again on Tuesday, April 10, against Corrigan-Camden. All games start at 7 p.m. The Woodville JV Baseball team will also play Hemphill at home on Tuesday, April 3, start-ing at 4:30 p.m. They will also

travel to Newton on Thursday, April 5, and then back home on Tuesday, April 10, to play Corrigan-Camden. All games start at 7 p.m. The Woodville High School Boys and Girls Track teams will participate in district events at Newton on Monday, April 9, and again on Wednesday, April 11. The Woodville Varsity Ten-nis team will participate in the

District 22-2A tournament to be held in Woodville on Thursday, April 4, and Friday, April 5. The Woodville Softball teams will travel to Newton for play on Thursday, April 5, and then will host Corrigan at home in Woodville on Tuesday, April 10. JV games start at 4:30 p.m. while Varsity games begin at 6 p.m.

In continuation of their stellar season, the Warren Warriors varsity baseball team added two more wins against Anahuac and Hardin to their record. The team has shown great promise in their skills and endurance, and cur-rently holds a record of 14 wins and four losses.The Warriors first played a full seven-inning game against Anahuac on March 19. The first inning opened a close game with Warren scoring two points, and the Panthers hit in one point. The Warriors’ opponents then pulled ahead and scored three points in the second inning, while the home team failed to score. However, the Panthers were to go scoreless for the rest of the game. The Warriors then scored a solid five runs in the next inning and scored once again in the sixth inning. A final three points in the final inning finished the game for the teams with the Warriors winning at 11-4. The team then traveled to Hardin to compete against the Hornets in a good game for the Warriors. They turned their heavy hitting on immediately and slung in three runners in the first inning, placing them in a comfortable position for the game. The Hornets tried to strike back in the next inning but only succeed in one point. Determined to maintain their lead, the War-ren boys hit in two more players to back up their initial lead. Three more hits were made for the team before the end of the seventh in-ning, ending the game at a score of 8-3, the Warriors winning yet again. The baseball team will play Buna on April 5 at home. The Warriors first played against Buna on March 13, a game which ended in Warren’s loss at 8-1. The team aims to overcome their defeat and turn the tables against Buna during this next game.

will be playing. This will be the team’s seventh district game.
