Who can vote?

You are eligible to vote in this General Election if, on Election Day, you:

a . are at least 18 years old;

b . are a Canadian citizen;

c . have resided in Alberta since April 18, 2010; and

d . are resident,

• forMayorandAlderman,ofTheCity of Calgary, and

• forPublicSchoolTrustee,oftheCalgary Board of Education, or

• forSeparateSchoolTrustee,ofthe Calgary Roman Catholic Separate School District No .1 .

Note: A student who:

(i) attends an educational institution within or, outside Alberta; and

(ii) temporarily rents accommodation for the purpose of attending an educational institution; and

(iii) has family members who are resident in Alberta and with whom the student ordinarily resides when not attending an educational institution,

is deemed to reside with those family members .

Where do I vote?

You must vote at the Voting Station for the Voting Subdivision in which you live on Election Day .

look at the city map on the facing page to find the Ward in which you live . Turn to the appropriate page for that Ward and, using the Ward map, determine the number of the Voting Subdivision where you reside . On the facing page, there is a list of the Voting Station names and addresses .

a . If a Voting Subdivision boundary is a street, the centre of the street is the dividing line .

b . If you live on a Voting Subdivision boundary, vote at the Voting Station that serves your side of the boundary .

When do I vote?

Election Day is October 18, 2010.

Voting Stations are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Note:

Electors who are unable to attend their regular Voting Station during these hours may cast their vote at the Advance Vote, or may be eligible for incapacitated elector voting at home, institutional voting or Mail-in (Special) Ballot . Details on these alternative methods of voting are found in this brochure .

What is the vote for?

City of Calgary Mayor and Aldermen

Calgary Public and Separate School Trustees

In 2010, you will normally receive a ballot for Mayor, Alderman, and School Trustee (either Public or Separate) . You may vote for only one school trustee . This is determined by the School District in which you reside .

How do I mark my ballots?

Mark your choice with an X.

Select only one candidate on each of the ballots: Mayor, Alderman, and Public or Separate School Trustee .

What is my Elector’s Statement?

Before you vote you must sign a statement* stating:

1 . You are eligible to vote;

2 . You live in the Voting Subdivision that your Voting Station serves; and

3 . You have not voted before in this election .

* It is an offense under Section 148(4) of the Local Authorities Election Act to make or sign a false statement, punishable by imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or a fine of not more than $10,000, or both a fine and imprisonment .

Voter identification

For the 2010 election, Calgary City Council amended Bylaw 58M2006, which requires electors to present one of the following forms of identification to the Deputy Returning Officer before being allowed to vote:

(a) Alberta Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) Card;

(b) Alberta Forestry Identification Card;

(c) Alberta Heath Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) Card;

(d) Alberta Health Services Ident Band laser Adult Wrist (Patient Wrist Identification Band);

(e) Alberta Identification Card;

(f) Alberta Natural Resources (Conservation) Identification Card;

(g) Alberta Service Dog Team Identification Card;

(h) Alberta Wildlife Identification Number (WIN) Card;

(i) Baptismal Certificate;

(j) Birth Certificate;

(k) Canada Border Services Agency Canadian Passenger Accelerated Service System (CANPASS) Card;

(l) Canada Border Services Agency Free and Secure Trade (FAST) Membership Card;

(m) Canada Border Services Agency NEXuS Membership Card;

(n) Canadian Air Transportation Security Agency (CATSA) Identification Card;

(o) Canadian Forces Civilian Identification Card;

(p) Canadian Forces Health Care Identification (CFHS) Card;

(q) Canadian Forces Identification Card;

(r) Canadian National Institute For The Blind (CNIB) Identification Card;

(s) Canadian Passport;

(t) Certificate of Canadian Citizenship;

(u) Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) Card, Government of Canada;

(v) Driver’s or Operator’s licence from any Canadian Province or Territory;

(w) Firearms licence Possession – Acquisition, Government of Canada;

(x) Firearms – Possession Only licence, Government of Canada;

(y) International Driving Permit (IDP);

(z) Métis Nation of Alberta Identification Card;

(aa) Old Age Security (OAS) Identification Card, Government of Canada;

(bb) Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), Government of Canada;

(cc) Royal Canadian Mounted Police Identification Card;

(dd) Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) Card, Government of Canada;

(ee) Veterans Affairs Health Identification Card, Government of Canada; and

(ff) Seniors Transit Pass issued by The City of Calgary .

Electors must produce one of the required identifications, and sign the statement, to receive their ballots and cast their vote .

What if I wasn’t enumerated?

You can vote, even if you were not enumerated .

If you are a qualified elector, you are eligible to vote . Go to the Voting Station for the Voting Subdivision in which you live on Election Day, and produce the required identification (page 5) . The Deputies will complete a Voting Register Card for you at that time .

The Enumeration of eligible electors was conducted in April 2010 for this General Election .

A Voting Register Card has been prepared for electors enumerated in April and should be at the Voting Station on Election Day .

What if I have moved since I was enumerated?

If you have moved since the Enumeration in April 2010, DO NOT return to your old voting location . You must vote at the Voting Station for where you live on Election Day . If there is no pre-printed Voting Register Card for you, one will be prepared at the time you arrive to vote .

What if I can’t vote on Election Day between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.?

There are several different options for voting, other than your regular Voting Station .

They are:

1 . Advance vote .

2 . Mail-in (Special) Ballot .

3 . Voting in hospitals for patients on Election Day .

4 . Voting in a variety of care facilities .

5 . Incapacitated voting at home .

Additional information on these methods follows.

Advance Vote

What are the qualifications for the Advance Vote?

All eligible electors can vote at one of the Advance Voting Stations .

Blind voter templates

Templates, which allow visually impaired electors to mark their ballots without assistance, are available only at the Advance Vote . All Advance Vote ballots are formatted for use with the template . Visually impaired electors must understand that the names of candidates rotate on the ballot and are not always in alphabetical order . A Deputy Returning Officer will read the candidate names in the order they appear on the ballot to the elector prior to voting .

When is the Advance Vote?

The Advance Vote is Wednesday to Sunday, Oct . 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct . 12 and 13 .

Advance Voting is also available on Thursday, Oct . 14 at the City Hall Complex location only .

You are unable to vote during the whole of the Advance Vote or at your regular Voting Station on Election Day because:

a . of physical incapacity, or

b . you are absent from the city, or

c . you are working Election Day as a Deputy Returning Officer, Constable, Candidate, Agent, Scrutineer or campaign worker .

Applications for the Mail-in (Special) Ballots can be made:

The ballots must be returned and received by the Election Office, no later than 8:00 p .m . on October 18, 2010, Election Day, in accordance with the instructions and in the envelopes provided . A photocopy of one of the acceptable pieces of ID (page 5) is required to be sent with the returned ballots .

Can I vote if I am in the hospital?

On Election Day, October 18, 2010, eligible electors who are patients at all active treatment hospitals will have an opportunity to vote . Deputies will go bed-to-bed in the hospital offering every patient who is an eligible elector and resident of Calgary a chance to vote . ID is still required in order to vote with this service, however your hospital bracelet is acceptable ID .

Physically incapacitated electors who are unable to attend the Regular or Advance Voting Stations may qualify to vote at their residence .

This is a special service provided on Election Day, October 18, 2010, between the hours of 10 a .m . and 7:30 p .m .

You may request this service by telephoning The City of Calgary, Election&InformationServicesOfficeat403-476-4100 (option 2) between 8 a .m . and 4:30 p .m ., Monday to Friday . Requests will be accepted from now until Election Day .

You are required to provide the following information:

a . The reason the elector is unable to attend at a Voting Station .

b . The elector’s name, address and phone number .

c . The times that the elector is unavailable on Election Day .

If your request is accepted, you will be advised of an approximate time when the Deputies will attend at the residence . Identification is required . (See page 5 .)

Are there other special Voting Stations?

On Election Day, October 18, 2010, Voting Stations will be located at most care facilities in the city for eligible electors who live in the facility . The hours of voting in these facilities are posted in each location at least 48 hours in advance of Election Day .

Personal information is collected under the authority of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Section 33(c) and the Local Authorities Election Act, and is used for purposes of conducting the election .
