Today, in ovo vaccination is a proven method for application of various vaccines in a hatchery. It offers many advantages over other (manual) post-hatchtreatments, such as:• Earlier immunity• Uniform vaccine delivery• Reduced stress for day old chicks• Lower labor costs

These advantages combined with the development of many new in ovo vaccines, capable of protecting the birds against various diseases for their complete lifespan, promises a great growth potential for this technology. The process and technique used to deliver vaccines in ovo is essential, as the injection and delivery must be made to the precise location within the egg and requires the highest possible level of hygiene.

Based on these challenges, Viscon Hatchery Automation hasdeveloped the new standard in safe in ovo vaccination. This product line carries the new Viscon brand VINOVO and offers hatcheries a bio-secure solution that will improve health and welfare of chicks, starting from the earliest stage in the hatchery.

Live embryo vaccinationOnly eggs with living embryos are beingvaccinated. The non-viable eggs (infertile eggs and dead embryos) remain untouched in the settertray for processing in a separate waste room, creating better hygiene and maximum vaccine saving.

Accurate vaccine deliveryMechanical grippers re-position the “living eggs” in perfect perpendicular position under the injection tools. Adjustable needle dept per flock improves accuracy by variation of egg sizes.

Double needle systemRobust punch for egg shell penetration with aninternal needle prevents damage or blockage of the needle and guarantees a durable method of vaccine administration.

Optimum needle sanitationAutomatic punch and needle sanitation reduces the risk of cross-contamination from egg to egg.

Live embryo transferOnly eggs with living embryos are being transferred to the hatcher baskets. The non-viable eggs (infertile eggs and deadembryos) remain untouched in the setter tray for processing in a separate waste room.

Selective transfer of eggs can be done by use of vacuum naps or by use of mechanicalgrippers. The mechanical grippers gently pinch the eggs during transfer, do not touch the area of injection and prevent air movement inside the eggs.

Non-viable eggs are a biological hazard, especially when they contain a dead embryo or are rotten. In many cases theseeggs hold pathogenic bacteria, which can be transmitted by contact (e.g. needles or vacuum naps) or airborne when these eggs break or explode during take-out, injection or transfer. Giving an increased risk of contaminating other eggs and creating an enormous health challenge for the newborn chicks later on.

To solve this problem Viscon has redesigned the complete transferprocess. This started with the development of a more accuratedetection system, Live Embryo Detection.

The Live Embryo Detection™ accurately indicates which eggs containa living embryo and classifies the non-viable eggs as infertile,early or late dead embryos. Exactly knowing the content of eachegg, enables selective processing during in ovo vaccination, eggtransfer and waste discharge. The VINOVO Select Inject™ in ovovaccination machine and the Select Transfer™ machine will onlyprocess the eggs that contain a living embryo.

First only the viable eggs are vaccinated and transferredto the hatcher baskets. The non-viable eggs (infertileand eggs with dead embryos) remain untouched in the setter tray, which is moved to a separate waste room where the infertile eggs can be taken out for resource recovery and the remaining dead eggs for disposal. Because this procedure takes place in a separate room and eggs with dead embryos or “bangers” do not enter the hatchersanymore, the spread of pathogens is prevented. Creating a morehygienic and safer environment for the chicks to hatch.

In a practice eggs are never in a perfect straight position in a setter tray. When injecting these eggs as they are positioned in the setter tray, they are not penetrated exactly at the top and center of the egg. This causes inaccurate delivery and thus lower efficacy rates of the vaccine.

The Vinovo Select Inject™ lifts the viable eggs gently out of the setter tray and re-positions each egg in a perfect perpendicularposition under the injection tools, by means of a patent pendingegg holder. This ensures that the eggs are penetrated at thetop of the egg and the tip of the needle is positioned in thecorrect compartment inside the egg (amnion cavity or embryo)to deliver the vaccine. The possibility to adjust the needle deptbased on the average egg size of each flock further improvesthe accuracy of vaccine placement and thus protection of the birds.

The Vinovo Select Inject™ uses a punch + needle as injection method.A robust punch first penetrates the egg shell and an inside needlesafely delivers the vaccine in the right location inside the egg.This is a proven technology that is both durable and hygienic.Compared to single needle systems, it prevents damage or blockageof the needle and ensures a reliable vaccine delivery.

Less vaccine wasted Accurate detection of living embryos by means of heartbeat sensors and selective injection of only these viable eggs, preventsvaccine wastage due to useless injection of non-viable eggs. Additional vaccine saving compared to traditional techniques is 3-5%, depending on egg quality.

The Vinovo Select Line is supported by a dedicated team of fieldservice engineers, for both planned preventive and corrective maintenance. This approach helps to keep operations running

optimally, minimize downtime and extending the lifetime. Performance reliability is further improved by using remotemonitoring services.

A project approach is elementary at Viscon Hatchery Automation. Directly after the order award the existing customer contact is being extended with a project team on both sides. To ensure both parties,that each party lives up to the expectations, Viscon insists on a clear, agreed upon communication structure and clear recordedrequirements in the form of a detailed functional specification. This creates the opportunity to measure the progress in the project as well. The initial contact with a client will take place with a sales engineer.

This person will remain responsible for the project throughout the entire process and will be the point of contact for the client. This will ensure made agreements will remain clear. On a more detailed level,an experienced project manager will join the team. This projectmanager will take care of the timely engineering of all (parts of )processes and guard the vast high quality which is the standard at Viscon. Since 1927 our company has been involved in automation in the agro/horticultural sector, where we started out in the Flax industry, the soft wire mater al used to produce clothing. This company was established by the great grandfather of the current generation owners, Jan Visser. After the demise in the flax business in 1967, the next Visser generationstarted to buy and sell equipment in the horticultural industryunder the new company name ‘Visser I.T.E.’. As the horticulture industryrapidly grew and diversified, it created a demand for custom mademachinery. The Visser family took this opportunity and started todevelop and manufacture their own machinery and provide custommade automation projects.

Years later, the experience and success in horticulture led to expansionin different Agro & Food related sectors, such as ‘Fresh Produce’, ‘Poultry´ and ‘Food Logistics’, which where named ‘Viscon‘: deductedfrom Visser Construction. In the last two decades the familycompany grew from approximately 40 employees, to over 200 employees active in different sectors all over the world. As for today, several business units, eachdedicated to a specific industry, form the ‘Viscon Group’.
