Maternal Bull Breeder ProgrammeRecommended AI Sire List 2015

The aim of this list is to provide pedigree breeders that are members of the Gene Ireland Maternal Beef Breedingprogram with a selection of AI Sires that they should mate to their highest index pedigree females to produce highindex young bulls. These young bulls will then be considered for purchase by the Gene Ireland Maternal BullBreeder Programme for entry into the progeny test programme. These bulls are selected by each breed’s GeneIreland Breeding committee which is made up of; Commercial Farmers, Pedigree Breeders, Breed SocietyRepresentatives, AI Companies & ICBF.

Semen Details: This section gives the AI company from which thesemen of each bull is available, as well as straw price and a royaltyfee where applicable. For each pedigree calf registered to the bullbelow a fee of €35 must be paid at registration, on top of theregistration fee.

Backround

• The indexes for each bull in this list are from the April 2015 evaluation run. Indexes are updated three times per year; April, August and December. It is, therefore, important that you check the online bull search at www.icbf.com after August 2015, to see the most up to date index for a bull.

• While every effort has been made to ensure that all of the bulls listed are available and that their semen details are up to date and correct, you will still need to contact the relevant AI company to be absolutely sure that a certain bull(s) are available.

• Bulls listed as available from NCBC (National Cattle Breeding Centre) in the following lists are marketed through Munster AI and Progressive Genetics.

• You will find contact details for all semen providers at the back of this booklet.

Gene Ireland Herd Liaison Officers (HLO’s)As you are probably already aware, ICBF has 5 HLO field officers working with the pedigree herds signed up to theGene Ireland Maternal Bull Breeder Programme. Their roles entail visiting each herd in their designated area once ayear to analyse the herd’s progress in areas such as:

• The genetic merit of the herd on the Euro-Star Replacement Index.• The Herd Data Quality Index (HDQI) score for the herd and the required data to improve the overall %.• Particular emphasis will be placed on birth data e.g. birth weights & measurements, calving ease, calf vigour etc.• Better data recording practises to ensure all data is recorded accurately and in a timely manner.• Selection of sires for mating with certain females to produce high Replacement Index young bulls.• Check weighing of a selection of calves in the herd to verify accurate data recording.
