OIL CO., INC. Forest City Lions Club celebrates 70th Anniversary In January of 1948, a small group of local busi- nessmen, at the request of Edwin A. Bloxham and Frank Gaydosh, met at Bloxham’s Paint and Wall- paper store, 630 Main Street, Forest City, for the purpose of organizing a Lions Club in the Forest City Area. After discus- sion they decided to form it and conduct another meeting at which a larger group of men could be in- vited. The second meeting was held the next month at the Forest House on Main St. and the following officers were elected: President Frank W. Gay- dosh 1st Vice Pres. Joseph Ka- meen 2nd Vice Pres. Atty. Ul- ric McHale 3rd Vice Pres. Dr. Phillip Henstell Secretary Jules J. Kerl Directors: (2 yrs.) Ed- win Bloxham and John Smith; (1 yr.) Russell Fries and Stanley Zimmer. Tail twister Abe Nudel- man Lion Tamer Harold Weiss The Charter Night was held April 8 at the Ameri- can House, Carbondale, with the Carbondale Lions Club as sponsor. Lion Jules J. Kerl served a toastmas- ter of the business session which included presen- tation of the Charter to President Gaydosh. Also presented were the bell, gavel, banners, flags of na- tions and plaques. Charter Members were: Dr. Roy M. Beane, Dr. H.R. Bell, Edwin Bloxham, Dr. A. B. Cimochowski, Joseph Churnicky, John M. Clark, Russell B. Fries, Sidney Freedman, Frank W. Gay- dosh, Maxwell Goldstein, Dr. Phillip Henstell, Dr. Morton Hodes, Robert W. Jones, Dr. Ward B. Jones, Joseph C. Kameen, Paul F. Kameen, Jules J. Kerl, Atty. Ulric McHale, Joseph Mis- kovsky, Martin Mooney, John Monasky, George Nolc, Abe Nudelman, John S. Obelenus, John Smith, Rudolph Smith, Abe Solomon, William Sre- denschek, Avery Twilley, Harold Weiss, Anthony Wysocki, Eugene Yorke, Stanley Zebrowski and Stanley Zimmer. The Club decided to hold their regular dinner meetings at The Forest House which was a hotel, restaurant and bar and was a friendly place for their twice a month meet- ings. It was located where the present Honesdale Na- tional Bank is today. Their first project was to furnish free-of-charge eye examinations and eye glasses to the needy of the Forest City Area. This dedication to sight con- servation has continued throughout the Club’s 70 year existence. Their next project, with Little League becoming popular in Forest City, was to sponsor a team in the Little League. Later they also sponsored a team in the Teener League. The next project they adopted was to establish a Teen Town in the Borough Building for youngsters. This project took from 1954 to 1959 and involved the expenditure of $6,000 to remodel the 3rd floor of the Borough Building as a place for local teenagers to meet. This ran for five years, with Lions members as chaperones, and became a wonderful event for teens to gather, dance and socialize. Many of the youngsters of that day still talk about the great times they had at Teen Town. It closed its doors when the new Forest City Re- gional School was built in 1960. All equipment was then donated to the new school. On February 17, 1963 a disaster struck Forest City and the Lions Club when a huge fire engulfed The Forest House and two ad- jacent buildings in one of the worst fires to hit the town up to that time. The fire completely destroyed all the Club’s records of the previous 15 years. This set back did not de- ter the Lions Club and in March of 1965 they under- took their largest commu- nity endeavor which con- tinues today, which was the establishment of the Forest City Branch Library. Lion’s members mar- shalled the agreements of the Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association, and Forest City Council, to provide a location in the Borough Building where the former Post Office had been located for many years. Council agreed to pro- vide the location and utili- ties at no cost, and the Lions Club provided all the funds to remodel and place the necessary fa- cilities there. It officially opened July 10, 1967. Thus for more than 50 years, the Club has pro- vided funds for shelving, carpeting, painting, furni- ture, and in recent years, for air conditioning and computers to serve the pa- trons of the Greater For- est City Area. They raised the money from pancake breakfasts and for a time with monthly Bingos. For more than 30 years they also have conducted an annual Golf Tourna- ment in July or August which raises funds for, not only the Library, but also their other community projects. In the 1970’s the Lions Club was the first organi- zation to donate funds to aid the development of the Borough-acquired Park at the Ice Pond, which was later renamed Kennedy Park. The Club also expend- ed a large portion of its treasury for the Street Signs which point the way around our three area communities. The Club continues its service to the communi- ties with their Sight Con- servation programs in- volving free screenings for youngsters. They also conduct trash pickups on area roads and the annual Christmas tree pickup. The present officers of the Club are: President Steven Tourje, Vice Presi- dent Machelle Owens, 2nd Vice President Glenn Junior, Secretary Suzanne Brainard and Treasurer Anthony Dell ‘Aquila. The Club is always look- ing for new members. They meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays at 6:30pm at the Crystal Pines, Crystal Lake. Anyone interested in joining can contact Pres. Tourje at [email protected] Members and officers of the Forest City Lions Club gathered for their March 26 meeting. They are: James Maricano, Denise Vauter, Suzanne Brainard, secretary; Machelle Owens, 1st Vice-President; Lenny Frosina; ( Front Row) Andy Junior, 2nd Vice President; Lou Orehek, Fran Graytock, Anthony Dellaqulla, treasurer; Steven Tourje, President; Lou Zefran, Edward Tourje, Jim Wells. “We Keep the Smile In The Mile” GENCO DENTAL CARE, PC ALL PHASES OF DENTISTRY 570-785-9500 518 Main Street, Forest City, PA 18421 Participating with Most Insurances Happy 70th Anniversary to the Forest City Lions Club!!
