GEN4OLIVE GOALS• GEN4OLIVE aims to leverage olive Genetic Resources (GenRes) by bringing

them to a higher level closer to breeders and farmers.

• Foster pre-breeding activities by:

1. Characterize more than 500 worldwide varieties and 1000 wild and ancient

genotypes around 5 topics:

- climate change

- pests and diseases

- production and quality

- and modern planting systems

2. Developing a smart end user-friendly interface to centralize and categorize all

olive varieties

3. Building two Apps to quickly identify genotypes and pest and diseases through

image analysis

4. Enhancing breeders and growers’ participation through the implementation of

two SMEs open calls for supporting pre-breeding activities and breeding plans

GEN4OLIVE CONCEPT

F o s t e r p r e - b r e e d i n g a c t i v i t i e s b y :

2. Climate change effects prediction

• Evaluation of Cultivar x Environment interaction will be done taking advantage to the variety's

replication in 5 different GBs

So, if a certain cultivar (e.g Arbequina) is found as replication in 5 GB, we will compare its properties considering the climatic

variables differences.

By these comparations, prediction models related to the climate change will be developed

GEN4OLIVE CONCEPT

F o s t e r p r e - b r e e d i n g a c t i v i t i e s b y :

3. Shortening the juvenile period (JP) – speeding up breeding

• Generation of early selection markers for short JP

• Evaluation of genetic mechanisms controlling JP

• Design and installation of the “Hybrid Fully Automated

Climate Controlled Cabinet”

o Stimulate the rapid growth of the seedling by

modifying the environmental conditions, fertilization

etc

GEN4OLIVE CONCEPT

F o s te r p r e - b r e e d i n g a c t i v i t i e s b y :

4. Developing user-friendly interfaces and databases

• Developing a smart end user-friendly interface to centralize

and categorize all olive varieties

• Building two Apps to quickly identify genotypes and pest

and diseases through image analysis;

solutions

3. Shortening the JP to speed up the breeding process

4. Building two Apps to quickly identify genotypes and pest and diseases

through image analysis;

5. Enhancing breeders and growers’ participation through the

implementation of two open calls

Promote the collaboration between Germplasm Banks to correctly identifyand evaluate olive genetic resources.
