A GEMS Student Leadership programme to provide; • A range of roles and responsibilities to a large number of student population. • Formal and informal learning opportunities to develop individuals as leaders. • Promotion of active citizenship by establishing functioning democratic bodies with real influence. • Increased staff: student dialogue, especially around teaching and learning. • Further student engagement. • Processes and structures for student representation and the incorporation of students’ views into decision making into the life of the school. • Pupil contribution to whole school improvement.

A GEMS Student Leadership Programme to; • Provide a wide range of participation and leadership opportunities which cater for all students in their schools. • Maximise the number and range of students undertaking leadership roles. • Provide recognition of all student leadership roles • Encourage the development of student participation and leadership skills through classroom practice by using OM/Enterprise Competencies across all Key Stages • Encourage students to differentiate between student participation and student leadership. • Develop student participation and leadership skills in all students through specific programmes, for example:

Initiate or develop existing leadership to create a GEMS Young Leaders Academy. Linked to all Dubai schools initially and with the E-Sports organisation. To provide opportunities for pupils to lead others in and out of school environment.

Utilise my knowledge and experience PE teaching and from working in, what is still seen as a valued World leading model for Physical Education and School Sport.

The Academy would be a programme of high quality training and development for young people who are committed to actively volunteering within their school and/or community, in order to develop leadership skills and voluntary experience.Selection CriteriaStudents will be selected from GEMS Secondary Schools. Aimed at Year 9-13Experience in leadership either in school or the community or identified by the PE department as having good leadership qualities What would pupils obtain from the programme?Training and qualificationsExperience to add to UCAS form and/or CVOpportunity to work with pupils in other GEMS schoolsCertificates for 50 Bronze, 100 Silver, 200 Gold hours logged on a GEMS Volunteer PassportT-Shirt to wear whilst volunteeringContacts for community voluntary placements

What do pupils commit to?Pupils must attend all training sessionsPupils must commit to 50 hours of sports volunteering at school and / or the communityA registration fee TBC to attend the academy.



The Academy would strive to provide opportunities for pupils to utilise their leadership/volunteering skills at major events held locally i.e Rugby Sevens, Golf - Dubai Desert Classics/Omega Ladies Masters, Dubai Sports World, Dubai Marathon, Polo, Desert Road Run, Boat Race, Dubai Tennis Championships etc.Thus raising the profile of GEMS Education and developing key partners to provide further opportunities for future academy young leaders.

Develop working relationships with established sporting clubs/providers to allow pupilsadequate and professional avenues for specific leadership development i.e Dubai Sports Council, Dubai Sports City, ICC Global Cricket Academy, Butch Harmon School of Golf, Socatots, E-Sports etc.

Foster links with individuals/groups already providing existing pathways to support anddevelop leadership – Emirates Foundation for Youth Development

Hamdan Bin Mohammed Program for Sports Leadership.

The aim is to see GEMS pupils leading and or volunteering, possibly even competing at major international events in the future, World Cup 2018, Olympics, World Championships.

Young playground leaders - Intra sportLunch time activities can help address the inactivity of some students, so enabling schools to work towards a target of two hours high quality PE and school sport per school week.What is it?Year 5 and/or 6 students will take part in a play leader's qualification.Younger students will then benefit by the older students leading them in a variety of activities.Target GroupYear 5 & 6 students are the targets to become young leaders.Young Leaders can then work with any year group younger than themselves.What GEMS PESS would provideBag of play ground equipment.Caps and certificates for the play ground leaders.In house training for lunchtime supervisor who will oversee the programme on a regular basis.T-shirt for meal time supervisor.What the School ProvidesCommitment to run the programme at least three times per weekIdentify a lunchtime supervisor to be overall coordinatorPlayground spaceMonitoring RequiredLunchtime incident log.Teacher/meal time supervisor observations.
