Rita Lazauskas
So I see (postcard from Morocco)
Whilst leading a life of adventure facilitating arts projects in Morocco,
Beechworth artist Rita Lazauskas creates observational drawings, paintings
and prints exploring the very rich and interesting environment of a place that
has become the artists second home.
Perched on the north west corner of Africa, Morocco has an ancient indigenous
population – the Amazigh (Berber) people - with a strong culture that still
survives millennia of invasions and colonisation, the strongest being the Arab
Islamic overlay introduced in the 7th century and most recently the 20th
century French occupation. Providing a visual feast of African, Islamic and
Indigenous influences, the medieval architecture is now peppered with
satellite dishes and a network of electrical cables and wiring that brings the
new world media to the masses.
Constantly traveling to and from Marrakech and following the ancient
trade routes across the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara has enabled an
engagement with the landscape and people and an opportunity to set up a
mix of natural, cultural and perceptual streams in the work.
Travel abroad gives us the opportunity to experience the ‘other’ and the complexities of human
existence. The many traditional artisans working in Morocco challenge our notions of art as
something separate from everyday life, while working alongside other visiting contemporary
Australian artists, has also allowed for the development of new sensibilities, media and expression in
the work.
The immediacy of working from life, the daily record that includes capturing the moment in an
often raw or fleeting glimpse, is coupled with an adept hand - sometimes compulsive, sometimes
obsessive in its style and form. The ancient Medina or suburbs of Marrakech provide just the kind of
chaos that suits Rita's distinctive drawing style, capturing the energy and life of the place and it's
people. Once outside of the city the landscape puts on a new show and age-old traditions persist.
“I enjoy the mix of ancient and modern life in Morocco where the culture and history is grounded in
the sublime landscape of the Atlas Mountains and Sahara.” says Rita “It is a place where traditional
dress and turbans are still commonly worn, both for their comfort and style and where adobe
villages and kasbahs are found. There is no shortage of interesting subjects for any artist.“
Laying in a part of the world known literally as ‘Maghreb’ (the west/where the sun sets), Morocco
presents an unusual precedent as it seems to straddle the divide between East and West. Recent
developments in the Arab world make this an opportune time to investigate the interface between
Western culture and Islam and work towards developing a greater understanding to enable
harmonious relations in the future.

OUR REALLY BIG NEWS – Sorry, needed to get your attention.
Gecko Studio Gallery incorporating Headquarters Café is about to be listed for sale!!
Well, the time has come.....after almost 12 years of Gecko, we have decided to put our beloved property
and business on the market. Since renovating last winter to install HeadQuarters cafe into the mix, we
have worked extra hard to ensure Gecko has remained vibrant and unique, and we now feel we are
ready to let go of the reins to pursue our art and artisan careers on a more full time basis. Whilst we will
be sad to say goodbye to the business and property, we intend to keep our framing business operating
from our home in Fish Creek East....along with new ventures yet to be realised. Below is the wording
scripted for the real estate advert....please feel free to share this around…
‘Situated in the heart of Fish Creek at 15 Falls Road, this unique property which has been the home of
Gecko Studio Gallery for the past 12 years, is now available for sale. Sitting alongside the Fish Creek
Memorial Hall, and opposite the local village park and playground, it is the ideal location.
This stand alone commercial property houses a vibrant and busy contemporary art gallery with a recently
installed cafe featuring a class 2 kitchen, a fully renovated attached residence, stunning private garden,
separate studio workshop, storeroom with garage and a covered carport.
The property is on mains water plus two 20,000 litre water tanks plumbed to laundry and toilets, a 3kw
solar system, reverse cycle aircons in gallery, cafe and residence and a highly efficient Nectre wood
heater.
Along with a large glass shopfront entrance on the main street and a garden courtyard side entrance
with an all access door, there is rear access to the property from Ryan St. The attached residence which
has been operating as short term tourist accommodation in recent years - known as the ArtHouse, is a
stylish, light filled modern cottage with beautifully maintained private garden.
Gecko Studio Gallery has been instrumental as a key business in the artistic and cultural transformation
of this small town, and is renowned for its presentation of quality art exhibitions, local artisan made
wares and an extensive range of quality art materials. With the inclusion of the cafe after extensive
renovations in July 2017, it is also a highly popular meeting place for locals and visitors alike.
Offered as a going concern, with or without stock, equipment and fittings, this is a unique opportunity to
make that lifestyle change and become part of a wonderful small and vibrant community.’

September Exhibitions
Gallery 1 – Sue Gilford - Since moving to South Gippsland l have been involved in many community
arts and indigenous projects, Artist in Schools program’s and murals for the South Gippsland Shire. I
have had numerous solo and group shows in South Gippsland and in Melbourne.
Currently I have an intense interest in pyrography and working my “burning” techniques onto timbers,
furniture gourds and boab nuts. I was really honoured to do my wood burning on the new information
desk at Wilsons Promontory. For the past few years I have really enjoyed teaching drawing and
pyrography in workshops and working towards exhibitions.
Gallery 2 – Zetta Kanta
Gallery 3 – ‘Colour and Movement’, Sandra Peeters - Drawing and painting have formed a strong
part of my life for as long as I can remember, along with a general interest in the visual arts. I am
mostly interested in representing and interpreting the movement, events and environment through the
use of abstracted line and colour.

● Sandy Point Music Club - A group of interested residents have recently banded together to form a
Sandy Point Music Club. Their aim is to enhance the village atmosphere of Sandy Point by organising
regular events at the Community Centre.
The plan is to encompass different styles of music to cater for different ages and groups with the main
focus on having social and fun evenings. This is very important in a community and Sandy Point is pretty
well a perfect size to allow this to happen.
As a result of running such events the group hopes to make a small profit with the proceeds being
donated to worthy causes with some local connection. Profit from the first two events was given to the
South Gippsland Hospital.
The Music Group would love to hear from people with ideas and “special requests” for future events. For
