An Irish tradition:The Celts celebrated Halloween as Samhain, 'AllHallowtide' - the 'Feast of the Dead', when the dead revisited the

mortal world. The celebration marked the end of Summer andthe start of the Winter months. During the eighth century theCatholic Church designated the first day of November as 'All

Saints Day' ('All Hallows') - a day of commemoration for thoseSaints that did not have a specific day of remembrance. The

night before was known as 'All Hallows Eve' which, over time, became known as Halloween.

Individual Senior Supporter ofthe Year

is Bobby Ray SeagravesBobby is family came from

humble beginnings, the coal mines ofWest Virginia. His grandparents on hismom’s side had a large family of 11children. Although they didn’t havemuch they were always generous, something Bobby inherited from hismom. His father’s family, though muchsmaller, was the same way, always

willing to help and give.Bobby was always personable,

easy to get to know and get along with, which made him a perfect candidate forthe job at the center.

Bobby loved his family so verymuch, always making time to go tooutings and reunions both here and inWest Virginia. He especially loved doingthings with his twin brother Billy, eventhough at times he would say “Bill is 5minutes older but acts like he’s 5 yearsolder” sometimes leading to a brotherlydisagreement. He loved to pick “fights”but not in a literal way but just to start a

debate or to get a rise out of you. Henever meant any harm or hard feelingsand if he did he would make it right. After his mom passed he always madesure his dad was OK, he was alwaysgoing to Cambridge (Ohio) to see himunder the pretense that Bobby neededhelp. As for his wife (Marion) andchildren, Crystal and Bobby Jr, he wasalways supportive and concerned andlet them go and do whatever theywanted. He supported his wife withher 75 mile bike ride because he knewhow much …cont. on pg 20

MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK AND NATIONAL DEPRESSION SCREENING DAYGeauga County Board of Mental Health and Recovery Services From the Desk of Jim Adams, CEO

National Depression Screening Day is held each October during Mental Illness AwarenessWeek, which is October 4th-10th this year. Screening for depression should be a part of aperson’s routine healthcare, along with other health screenings, such as those performed todetect diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Early identification and treatment can make a difference. Some of the symptoms of depressioninclude sleeping too little or too much, loss of interest in activities, reduced or increasedappetite, fatigue and/or loss of energy, restlessness, and irritability. The more people know about mentalillness, the better they can help themselves, their families and their communities.

As a service to the Geauga community, Ravenwood Mental Health Center will be conducting screeningsfree of charge on October 8th from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM at their office located at 12557 RavenwoodDrive, Chardon, Ohio. Walk-ins are welcome or you can schedule a specific time by calling 440-285-3568. Screenings can be done for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or post traumatic stress disorder.

If you or a loved one are not able to take advantage of this opportunity on October 8th, the GeaugaCounty Board of Mental Health and Recovery Services provides a 24-hour hotline called COPELINE(440-285-5665) that is available to Geauga County residents who need help with a mental health orsubstance abuse issue. Winterization TipsWinterizing your home to prepare for the cold season canhelp make your place more energy efficient, which is goodfor both the environment and your bank account. Whileoutdoor winterization is important, prepping indoors is justas crucial. Here are 10 simple steps you can take to get theinside of your house ready for Old Man Winter.~~Check that smoke alarms and carbon monoxidedetectors are in working order. It’s a good idea to replacethe batteries going into the winter months.~~Clean gutters of any debris. Make sure downspoutsextend away from the house at least 5 feet to preventflooding of the foundation and water damage fromsnowmelt.~~Have your furnace and heating system tuned—up by aqualified technician, so that when your thermostat calls forheat, your furnace will respond. Check your furnace filterat least once a month to ensure proper airflow.

~~Turn off the water supply to all outside water taps anddrain the hoses. Any water left in the pipes could freezeand burst them.~~Check your emergency supplies. Flashlights, radio, food, water, blankets, medicines, first aid kit, etc.Insulate any water lines that run along outer walls. Thiswill make water less likely to freeze.~~Repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that couldfall on your home or other structure during a storm.Check around doors and windows for leaks and drafts. Addweather-stripping and caulk any holes you see that allowheat to escape. Make sure doors seal properly.~~Make sure all heating vents are opened and unblockedby furniture or other items. This will ensure that the air isevenly distributed through the home~~Have a shovel and rock salt on hand so you do not getcaught off guard. Rock salt is in high demand in the wintermonths, so stock up.
