INTRODUCTION

Gears are very complex mechanisms that have always fascinated researchers and technicians.

Even today we can’t say that all the theoretical concepts that would allow the perfect manufacture of

gears are known. If it is true that there has been a great development in the definition of its geometry,

materials, selection of treatment and lubrication, the truth is that the design and manufacture of gears

is still a challenge, because of more and more demanding working conditions, and use of more

economical manufacturing processes.

In the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management of FEUP these

mechanisms have always been the object of great attention in the curriculum of the future Mechanical

Engineers. Further to education in the field, research related to gears is carried out in the Department

and associated Institutes, particularly in the domain of Tribology.

It is in this context that appears the GEARS 2003, the first symposium that has ever taken

place in the Iberian Peninsula specifically dedicated to mechanical transmissions.

This symposium, GEARS 2003, intends to be a forum bringing together university and industry

for a professional discussion of different aspects of gears and gearing, also open to Mechanical

Engineering students.

The symposium attracted gear manufactures and users. Mechanical transmissions are, from the

economical point of view, very important for Portugal. Therefore it is not surprising that this initiative

attracted a large number of participants.

We must thank all persons and organizations that made possible this initiative. First of all we

should mention the University of Porto and its Faculty of Engineering, where the symposium takes

place. Also, we acknowledge the companies SEW-EURODRIVE Gmbh & Co and RENAULT-C.A.C.I.A. S.A.,

whose interest and financial support were essential for the success of this meeting.

The speakers deserve particular thanks. Without their competence and interest, the GEARS

2003 would not be possible. In particular, the participation of Professor Manfred Weck and his

colleagues from WZL, RWTH, Aachen, Germany, is acknowledged for their important contribution.

We would like to express our gratitude to the participants, which came in large numbers for

this first meeting concerning this important subject.

Special thanks are due to Mr. Quê Vu Do from RENAULT - C.A.C.I.A. S.A., for his pledge to

organize this symposium at FEUP.

Our thanks to all those in FEUP who contributed to the organization of GEARS 2003, in

particular Mrs. Fernanda Fonseca and Eng. Ramiro Martins.

We must mention in a very particular way Professor Georges Henriot. His presence is an honor

for us. It was and still is with his treatise “Traité Théorique et Pratique des Engrenages” that several

generations of Portuguese Mechanical Engineers studied mechanical transmissions and appreciated the

importance of this subject. The presence of Professor Georges Henriot makes us very proud and is an

PREFÁCIO

As engrenagens são dos mecanismos mais complexos e que sempre fascinaram investigadores e

técnicos. Não se creia que hoje já se dominam todos os conceitos teóricos relativos às engrenagens,

que permitam uma execução perfeita das mesmas. Se tem existido uma evolução muito grande na

definição da sua geometria, na selecção dos materiais e no seu tratamento, na lubrificação, todos

sabemos que a sua execução continua a levantar grandes dificuldades, até porque as condições de

funcionamento são cada vez mais severas, pedindo-se (como sempre!) uma realização cada vez mais

económica.

No Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e Gestão Industrial da FEUP sempre foi dado um

tratamento muito especial a estes mecanismos, considerando-se que o seu conhecimento é essencial

para a correcta formação dos futuros Engenheiros Mecânicos. Tal levou ao desenvolvimento de estudos

de natureza científica e tecnológica nas ciências envolvidas, particularmente a Tribologia.

É neste contexto que aparece o GEARS 2003, primeira reunião científica realizada na Península

Ibérica dedicada a este tema.

GEARS 2003 que pretende ser um fórum aberto de discussão entre académicos e industriais

interessados nas diferentes vertentes de tão vasto tema e em que os futuros Engenheiros Mecânicos

possam participar activamente, assim enriquecendo o seu conhecimento.

Sabendo-se da importância económica que as transmissões mecânicas têm na indústria

portuguesa, quer na sua produção (para a indústria automóvel e para equipamentos industriais), quer

como utilizadores, não admira a adesão que esta jornada tem vindo a ter.

Torna-se agora necessário agradecer a todos aqueles que se empenharam para que estas

jornadas fossem um êxito. Em primeiro lugar a Reitoria da Universidade do Porto e a Direcção da FEUP

que nos acolheram e incentivaram. As empresas SEW-EURODRIVE Gmbh & Co e RENAULT-C.A.C.I.A.

S.A., cujo apoio financeiro permitiu tornar mais fácil a realização desta Jornada.

Os oradores merecem uma particular referência, pois sem a sua presença, competente e

interessada, o GEARS 2003 não poderia realizar-se. Salienta-se a participação do Professor Manfred

Weck e da sua equipa do WZL, RWTH de Aachen, Alemanha, pela sua importante contribuição.

Um agradecimento vai também para os participantes, razão de ser deste evento e que

apareceram em número muito elevado para uma primeira organização deste tipo.

Uma palavra de apreço para o Sr. Eng. Quê Vu Do da RENAULT-C.A.C.I.A. S.A., pelo empenho

que teve em que esta jornada tivesse lugar na FEUP.

Ainda uma palavra de agradecimento a todos os que na FEUP contribuíram para a realização do

GEARS 2003, em particular a D. Fernanda Fonseca e o Engº Ramiro Martins.

Por fim, uma menção muito especial para o Sr. Professor Georges Henriot, que nos honra e

sensibiliza com a sua presença. Não é demais relembrar que foi e é com a sua obra máxima sobre

engrenagens “Traité Théorique et Pratique des Engrenages” que várias gerações de Engenheiros

Mecânicos em Portugal tomaram conhecimento e estudaram as transmissões mecânicas. A presença do

Sr. Professor Georges Henriot é motivo de orgulho e incentiva-nos a continuar no desenvolvimento do
