In 2010, we paused, and although we had
every opportunity to set modest goals given
the global recession, we accelerated our
ambitions or the next ve years:
Double clean-tech research and
development to $10 billion
Grow ecomagination revenue at twice
the rate o overall GE revenues
Reduce energy intensity by 50 percent
and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by
25 percent
Reduce water use by 25 percent
But we also committed to a greater role

Energy is essential to human progress. Societies
depend on it to maintain and improve quality
o lie, keep industries competitive and create
jobs. But despite energys importance, we
are not moving ast enough to make sure
we can meet our uture energy needs in ways
that are aordable, sustainable and secure.
The status quo is not the answer. We need
to move past the policy disputes o today
and take bold action to build a clean energyeconomy or tomorrow.
Fortunately, a handul o leading companies
such as GE have committed themselves
to doing their part to achieve this goal. But
these businesses need more certainty rom
government. They need to know that their
investments are aligned with public policies
that infuence and shape domestic and world
energy markets over time.
I am proud to see GE taking action on these
issues despite todays uncertainty and
the mixed signals business is receiving rom
governments around the world. GE knows
that transorming how we generate and
consume energy is essential to protecting
both the environment and our economic
competitiveness. Its time or others to ollow
GEs lead so we can see dramatic growth
in new clean energy technologies in the
years to come.
Over the last decade, companies have expe-
rienced a seismic shit in how and where they
engage. The marketplace has shited rom
a shareholder to a stakeholder model, with
new societal expectations o business. The
media now operates in a our-lea clover o
Mainstream, New, Social and Owned. Finally,
we are in the center o a global economic
transormation, where the dening challenge
o our time will be to do more with less.
As an Advisory Board member, I have seen
how GE is creating innovative technologies
that are ecient, reliable and cost-eective.
One way GE is accomplishing this is by
engaging innovators through an open model
o collaboration.
Through the ecomagination Challenge,
GE asked or new ideas to solve our global
energy problems. GE engaged various
stakeholders, rom GEs investment partners
like Foundation Capital to thought leaders likeWireds Chris Anderson to a group o students
in India, ultimately generating nearly 4,000
ideas rom 150 nations, 80,000 comments
and hundreds o media hits.
By embracing the complexity o collaborative
ideation, companies like GE are working with
ecosystems o innovators to introduce more
clean technologies that are helping to create
a better, more prosperous world.
Electric transportation has progressed urther
in the last decade than it has in the last
century. Innovation in design, advanced
battery technologies and greater consumer
interest and education are all making clean
technologies an increasingly desirable
choice or consumers.
Working closely with manuacturers, technical
partners and communities, electric utility
companies nationwide are adapting electricvehicles or their own feets and supporting
the development and deployment o inra-
structure to put more electric vehicles on
the road.
At Edison Electric Institute, we are helping to
educate constituents about the need to invest
in new generation, transmission and distribu-
tion inrastructure enhancements, and we are
optimistic about what the uture holds.
Like GE, we see electric vehicles as having the
potential to redene transportation, reducing
CO2
emissions signicantly as well as our
dependence on oreign oil. Even better, they
are un to drive; I, like many o GEs feet
operators, proudly drive an electric vehicle.
These are among some o the most exciting
times to be in our industry. The transormation
o the way the world thinks about energy will
not be a quick or an easy task. But it already
has begun.

In 2010, GE Energy Financial Services hit
its multiyear target o investing $6 billion
in renewable energy. Nearly 30 percent
o the business units overall portolio is
now in renewable energy, up rom about
6 percent in 2006. Over the past two years,
the business unit invested, or committedto invest, more than $1.5 billion in wind
arms, closed transactions in solar and
hydroelectric power generation, and made
venture capital investments in smart grid
and renewable energy companies. The
investments span 14 countries across a
wide spectrum o capital.

In 2010, GE lowered its GHG emissions to
5.7 million metric tons, a reduction o
24 percent rom our adjusted 2004 base-
line.* In addition, our installed base o windturbines helped avoid GHG emissions o
45.4 million metric tons o CO2
equivalents
in 2010. In other words, the ossil uel
emissions our wind turbines helped to avoid
last year represent approximately eight
times the amount o the emissions rom our
business operations.
In 2010, our GHG emissions intensity
reduction was 37.4 percent better than in
2004. (Although we exceeded our goal o

improved by 32.8 percent since 2004.
In 2010, GE recognized 35 o its acilities
as CO2e award winners. These sites
had at least a 5 percent reduction in
GHG emissions versus the baseline year,
independent o changes in production
levels. In the aggregate, the sites reduced
their emissions by more than 200,000
metric tons o CO2 equivalents since2004. In addition, several sites in the U.K.
were recognized by the Carbon Trust
or their progress on carbon emissions
reduction eorts.

Factors contributing to the increase over last
years results:
Increased attendance at our NBC Universal
(NBCU) theme parks in the United States
(increase in potable water use)
Product-testing campaigns (increase in
once-through cooling water use)
Our original goal was to reduce our resh-
water consumption by 20 percent in 2012
rom our 2006 baseline. In early 2009, we
modied the goal to a 25 percent reduction
by 2015. (GE annually collects water data or
those sites consuming more than 15 million
gallons a year.)
GE also anticipates an additional 5 percent
reduction in our water use by using our
own Water & Process technology equipment
to recycle and reuse water. We anticipate
the new U.S. plant, where this technology will
be installed, to be operational by 2015.

2010 was a year o action. As an advisor
and judge or GEs ecomagination
Challenge, I was able to witness rsthand
the new ideas born through collaborative
ideation. The Challenge connected a global
network o innovators and revealed that,
when you bring great thinkers together, you
think bigger. When you cross-pollinate good
ideas, they become better. And when you
put rigor and scale behind those ideas, youunleash thinking that is both transcendent
and grounded in real business.
The value derived rom problem solving
with a network o ideas is undeniable.
This has shown us a clear path orward,
where industry collaborates with academia,
venture capital and entrepreneurs around
the world, in an open environment.
Last July, GE announced its $200 million
ecomagination Challenge: Powering the
Grid, an open call or the best ideas totransorm how we create, connect and use
power. Knowing we could not tackle these
challenges alone, GE partnered with our
leading venture capital frmsRockPort
Capital, Foundation Capital, Kleiner Perkins
Caufeld & Byers (KPCB) and Emerald
Technology Venturesto fnd and und
promising technologies. In 10 weeks, the
Challenge emerged as one o the largest
initiatives o its kind, generating nearly
4,000 ideas and creating a community
o 74,000 people across more than150 countries.
To date, we have:

For GE, this Challenge was more than

market worth $20 billion.
The strategic partnerships chosen through
the Challenge are well positioned to yield
signicant returns on investment in the uture.
For instance, energy storage and intelligent
sensor technologies will both play critical
roles in building the grid o the uture. With
investments in Sentient Energy and SustainX,
GE will help commercialize advanced
technologies that solve our digital energy
challengestoday.
Additionally, Challenge partner Consert
Inc. recently announced that it had signed
a commercialization agreement with
Wake Electric Membership Corporation to
provide the companys Energy ManagementSolution. Conserts innovation will help to
improve the eciency, reliability and saety
o electricity delivery and use or Wake
Electrics members.
In January, we announced the second phase
o the ChallengePowering Your Home
to nd the best home-energy-management
technologies. GE and its partners believe
this space is ripe with opportunities or growth
and innovation; te eerg-efciet ome-
improvemet market is orecast to icreaserom $38.3 billio i 2009 to $50.2 billio
b 2014.

At a GE manuacturing acility in Bloomington,
Indiana, that was once slated or closure,
were investing $161 million, designating it
a rerigeration design and manuacturing
Center o Excellence, and creating 200
new jobs. Most o the new products at the
Bloomington actory will be smart-grid
enabled to save energy and cut costs.
In Bucyrus, Ohio, we have invested more
than $60 million to expand the towns
lighting actory, designating it a GE Center
o Excellence, and doubling its workorce
by adding 130 new jobs.
In Atlanta, Georgia, we have created a
new Smart Grid Technology Center o
Excellence that will create more than
400 new jobs over the next three years.
Our new acility will serve as a smart
grid customer experience center, a
smart grid live testing laboratory and
worldwide headquarters o GEs Digital
Energy business.
Across the United States, an estimated
2,650 jobs will be supported by a
$750 million deal with Reliance Power Ltd.

In 2010, GE introduced the WattStation
electric vehicle charging station, a ast, easy-
to-use, award-winning charging solution
or the new electric vehicles now hitting the
nations streets and highways. WattStation
is designed to help enable an electric vehicle
owner to charge an EV aster compared
to standard (level 1) plug-in charging. By
enabling aster charging, GEs WattStation
(level 2) oers EV owners greater conve-
nience and fexibility in managing their dailyschedules. For example, an EV with a 24 kWh
battery will take between our and eight
hours to charge by using GEs WattStation,
instead o approximately 12 to 18 hours with
standard plug-in charging or a ull charge.
Its unctional, user-riendly design will allow
WattStation to be installed in a wide range
o convenient locationsretail stores, oces,
parking lotsanywhere a driver might park
a vehicle while engaging in shopping, work
or recreational activities. WattStation canalso help utilities manage the impact o EVs
on the local and regional grids.
WattStation is part o GEs commitment to
help build a total EV ecosystem, including
circuit protection equipment, transormers
and charging stations. With more than
100 years o experience in electrical distribu-
tion products, GE is uniquely positioned to
improve and upgrade the entire back-end
electric system to support chargingrom
the power plant, to the electric outlet, to the
car charger.
GE is also helping to develop cutting-edge
technology or EVs themselves. In act, more
than 70 percent o the hybrid electric vehicles
on the road today rely on GE innovations.
Working with industry partners, we are devel-
oping both more-ecient battery technology
and smarter battery nancing. For example,
through a partnership with Better Place, we
are pioneering a battery nancing program,
starting with a pilot project to nance
10,000 car batteries in Israel and Denmark.
With WattStation, complementary grid
technologies, better EV batteries and
nancing solutions, GE is providing a clear
road map or the large-scale deployment
o electric vehicles.

GE Aviations PBN Services group wasenlisted by Qantas to implement Required
Navigation Perormance (RNP) systems that
would deliver signicant environmental and
economic benets. RNP technology allows
aircrat to fy extremely precise, curved fight
paths without relying on ground-based
radio-navigation signals. This accuracy
helps to reduce track miles, CO2
emissions
and aircrat noise, while conserving uel and
increasing airspace capacity. Because o
RNPs precision and reliability, it can help
air trac controllers reduce fight delays
and ease air trac congestion.
Qantas implemented its rst RNP procedure
in 2004 in Queenstown, New Zealand, an
airport that is highly vulnerable to fight
delays and diversions due to challenging
weather and terrain conditions. The RNP
procedures improved Qantas operationsinto Queenstown, signicantly reducing uel
burn and emissions rom fight diversions,
and increased saety in navigating the
airports mountainous terrain.
GE has since partnered with Qantas
and Airservices Australia, an air navigation
service provider, to deploy RNP at
17 Australian airports.

RailEdge Movement Planner Enabling More-Ecient Freight Trains and Reducing Emissions
GEs RailEdge Movement Planner sotware enables trains tomove more reight more eciently, similar to an air traccontrol system, thereby saving costs and reducing emissions.
RailEdge is like an air trac control system
or trains. The sotware takes into account
train schedules, trac control systems
and train movements relative to one
another across an entire network. The
result is an optimized operating plan or
any given day, down to the optimal speed
at which a particular train should travel.With Movement Planner, railroads can
expect velocity increases o approximately
10 percent. That is typically equal to three
or our miles per hour in increased speed.
As with automobiles, a train traveling
aster with ewer stops and starts consumes
less uel. Unlike automobiles, however, a
train can move a ton o reight an average
o 480 miles on a single gallon o uel.
GE and Norolk Southern have implemented
Movement Planner in six o the companys
11 divisions, and expect to have it running on
all 21,000 miles o Norolk Southern track by
the end o 2012.

We were ortunate to start rom a great
oundation. In 2007, GE Energy invested in
a small thin ilm solar start-up, Primestar
Solar, Inc. Primestars cadmium telluride (CdTe)
technology matched up well with GEs
diverse research capabilities.
By 2010, our research activities were in ull
swing. While scientists and engineers in GEs
Global Research headquarters in Upstate
New York slept, their colleagues in China and
India were perorming in-depth research to
nd the right material conguration.
As the Asian workday came to a close,
GE scientists and engineers in Munich,
Germany, the heart o the solar industry,
were just getting started. Using state-
o-the-art solar testing acilities, they
assessed the overall system perormance
o our panels to see i what we had was
scalable into a best-in-class product.
As the sun reached its peak in Munich,
researchers at GEs Global Research
headquarters in Upstate New York madetheir way to work. In the lab, they developed
cell sample ater cell sample. They tested
thousands o dierent congurations, with
each one telling them how to push eciency
and perormance ever higher. Throughout

Clistar Corporation, a division o Cott
Corporation, is one o the largest producers
o private-label juice products in the United
Stateswith more than 145 blends and
a customer base that includes prominent
national and regional retailers. Based on
its continuous-improvement philosophy,
which values data-driven decisions, Clistarimplemented GE Intelligent Platorms
Procy production sotware suite in 2010.
Clistar believed there were signicant
opportunities to improve their operational
perormance and protability by ocusing
on product quality, production eciency
and material usage, and to gain visibility into
real-time operations management through
Procy sotware.
The goal o the tool is to have greater
insight into the process, said Don Enstrom,Senior Director, Manuacturing & Engineering
Services or Clistar. There are a lot o
people who believe they know the process,
but they dont really know it. They have
learned a lot by looking at real data.
In a ew short months, Procy sotware
enabled rapid gains in production eciency
in its packaging operations by highlighting
areas where equipment tuning, procedural
changes and training could be used to
address the underlying causes o all aspects
o inecient resource usageincluding
equipment, materials and labor. As a result,other Clistar plants are considering using
this sotware so that they can achieve these
kinds o results.
The use o manuacturing inormation to
drive rapid benecial change in methods,
machinery and manpower is critical
to maintaining Clistars competitive

move the city toward greater sustainability.
Smart City San Diegos rst project is to over-
see one o the largest early deployments o
electric vehicles in the United States. The rapid
rollout is expected to serve as an economic
boon or the city.
In the short term, the initiative will spur signi-
cant investments in home and public charging
outlets, clean energy sources and rigorous
studies in consumer behavior. Down the road,electric vehicles stand to save drivers 25 to
30 percent per mile in overall operating costs.

Discovery at Spring Trails, located in Houston,
Texas, is a master-planned residential com-
munity o more than 1,000 homes being
developed by Land Tejas. GE worked with
Land Tejas to design a communitywide
standard that requires home builders to
use ultra-energy-ecient construction and
appliances, plus a minimum o 1 kW o
rootop solar panel. Land Tejas estimates
that this combination will make it possible to
reduce energy consumption by approximately
40 percent versus comparable new code-
built homes.
The new community is just one example o
GEs Homes Inspired by ecomagination
initiative, which is designed to lower overall
household energy, emissions and indoor
water consumption. A key to lowering energy
consumption is better use monitoring, which
can be accomplished with GEs Nucleus
energy manager system in conjunction with
a smart meter and in coordination with ones
local utility service. Research has proven that
when consumers have more inormation
about their energy use, consumption isreduced by an average o 10 percent.
Homes Inspired by ecomagination has
earned two industry classicationsthe

the ENERGY STAR Qualied New Home

collect and store household electricity
consumption and estimated pricing data.
To help utilities manage peak demand, the
Nucleus and Brillion technologies can receive
and respond to price and demand-response
signals rom power companies to lower or
delay power consumption o enabled devicesand appliances during certain hours o the
day. Demand-response programs also can
help utilities avoid building more power
plants by incentivizing consumers to lower
their demand during peak hours. Reducing
energy use during peak hours also reduces
the communitys need to purchase backup
power to meet demand during energy spikes.

expinc Cnt in Atlanta.
The Center provides perspective on current
energy consumption habits and potential
strains o projected demand. Tours o the
Center introduce visitors to new technologies
that can modernize our electrical grid,
and educate them on how to integrate
good decisions about energy use into
their liestyles. The Experience Center also
eatures in-depth technical demonstrations
so utility engineers can learn about GEs
proven energy solutions or increasing
eciency and reliability.
Global electricity demand is expected to
increase 75 percent by 2030, said Bob
Gilligan, vice president, Digital Energy or
GE Energy Services. We must take
action to modernize the grid to meet our
growing capacity, environmental and
security needs.
GE and the Grid IQ Experience Center have
been good or the local economy, employing
upwards o 200 people, a number that is
expected to double by 2012.
The Smart Grid Center o Excellence was

Over the past several years, Walmart
has engaged GE around the world or LED
lighting systems that have transormed how

GE worked with the county to design a new
treatment acility using the ZeeWeed 500
Hollow-ber Membrane. The ZeeWeed 500
enables an advanced ltration process
that would meet Oregons Class A water
reuse standards, which are among the most
stringent in the United States.
The ZeeWeed 500s system works by
pulling wastewater through reinorced
hollow-ber membranes that separate
and remove particulate matter, resulting in
clean, high-quality water. This technology
has a record o outstanding perormance
in dicult-to-treat water sources, such as
municipal and industrial wastewater. The
ZeeWeed membrane ber has an extremely
small pore size so that it acts as a barrier to
biomass, bacteria and viruses, and retainsthese substances in the process tank.

Industrial acilities consume large volumes
o water to cool process equipment, which
requires cooling-water systems that can
repeatedly use the same water. Corrosion
and microbiological contamination must
be controlled to ensure sae, reliable and
ecient operation o these cooling systems.
Understanding the pressures that rising
energy costs and strains on capacity place
on industrial acilities, GE recommended
upgrading the plants chemical program with
its GenGard 8000 alkaline technology. An
extension o GEs existing GenGard product
line, the equipment helps acilities improve
eciency and reduce operating costs by
providing greater production output and the
ability to use alternative water resources.
With GenGard 8000, customers can treat low-
quality water. In many cases, the technology
can also eliminate the need or suluric acid in
pH control. Incorporating the most advanced
deposit and corrosion additives available,
GenGard 8000 is helping acilities trim acid
usage ahead o any industry regulations
requiring such a reduction.
The plant was able to resolve its water
contamination challenges through the use
o GenGard 8000. GE helped the plant control
corrosion and microbiological contamination
ensuring sae, reliable and ecient operation
throughout the cooling process.
GE also replaced the plants chemical eed
and control program with a TrueSense
Online Integrated Control Center to auto-
matically monitor and adjust water quality,
reeing workers rom the time-consuming
task o making manual adjustments in the
cooling process.
By improving operating eciency, reducing
acid use and enabling the use o lower-qualitywater, GE helped the power plant achieve
responsible, cost-eective water management
practices and provided substantial savings in
both water consumption and operating costs.

The result was the worlds rst sugarcane-
based ethanol power plant, powered by GEs
LM6000 PC aeroderivative gas turbines.
The Juiz de Fora Power Plant, serving 150,000
people in southeastern Brazil, is a simple-
cycle, natural gas plant with a total capacity
o 87 MW. The plant has two LM6000 PC gas
turbines, with GE-modied combustors that
enable the use o ethanol as well as natural
gas. This dual-uel capability enhances
the plants energy security and reliability byproviding a valuable alternative uel source.
Petrobras selected the aeroderivative gas
turbine or this project because o its
demonstrated reliability and high eciency,
and its ability to accommodate alternative
uels, including biodiesel, naphtha and
many others.

Ater considering alternatives such as coal
and biomass, Great Northern opted or
a cogeneration solution and selected a GE
Jenbacher system that includes a CO2
ertilization option or greenhouses. Great
Northerns decision coincided with an
initiative by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA)
to expand the local grid with 1,000 MW o
cogeneration power. With GEs help, Great
Northern prepared an application to OPA orits cogeneration projectand won approval.
The 12-MW power plant, with our Jenbacher
JM620 units, began operation in July 2009,
and was GEs rst North American green-
house cogeneration installation. The plant is
expected to cut Great Northerns greenhouse
energy costs by at least 50 percent over a
20-year period and divert 15,000 tons o CO2
away rom the atmosphere and into crop
ertilization. It also will supply enough surplus
power to the grid to light 12,00015,000Canadian homes each year. Last year it was
also used to provide cooling to the ware-
house at the site.
As a combined heat and power (CHP) plant, the
Great Northern acility uses less uel with the
same power output compared to t raditional
greenhouses. This can lower regional industrial

Greenhouse plants thrive in a CO2-enriched
atmosphere. Jenbacher cogeneration systems

is recycled as ert ilizer. The

GASCO decided to partner with GE Oil &
Gasa natural choice, as GE gas turbines
represent more than 70 percent o its
installed feet.
This initiative was launched in 2010 by
GASCO CEO Mohammed Sahoo Al Suwaidi
and GE Oil & Gas CEO Claudi Santiago. In one
o the key activities under the partnership, a
technology-sharing seminar was attended
by 75 operational and engineering sta
at the Habshan natural gas complex in
February 2011.
The seminar introduced relevant products
and services rom across the GE Oil & Gas
ecomagination portolio. Discussion topics
included gas turbine emissions management,
the potential eciencies and environmental
benets o GEs Integrated Compressor Line,
and the compression and pumping o CO2
or enhanced oil recovery and carbon capture
and storage. The session also explored
options or upgrading existing equipment
or better availability and uel eciency.
GASCO and GE are ollowing up on actions
agreed to at the seminar and will reconvene
early next year to review progress and to
plan the next steps. Among the areas beingevaluated are new technologies to improve
eciency and reduce CO2
emissions per MW
generated, and increasing the reliability and
MTBT (mean time between trips) o existing
machines, thus reducing the occurrence
o faring.

In 2010, Alliance asked GE to solve the
problem o the rich-mix turbine uel gas,
used to power the pipelines compressorunits, consuming high-value natural gas
liquids (NGLs) in the process. GE engineers
and design teams worked along with
Alliance to create a new solution to lter
the NGLs and make them available or
storage and sale, creating signicant
nancial opportunities while simultaneously
reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The result was GEs FuelEx NGL Recovery
System, which separates heavier
hydrocarbons rom uel gas, to deliver a
predominantly methane-based gas turbine
uel while reducing CO2
emissions. FuelEx
makes available a stream o clean gas or
ueling the gas turbine, while the separated
NGLs are returned to the pipeline or to a
storage acility. The purer gas that travels
the length o the pipe as the result o
the FuelEx technology also improves the
perormance o the dry gas seals in the
pipelinereducing even urther the chance
o CO2
escaping in transit.
The rst installation o the FuelEx system is
scheduled to take place in the all o 2011.
Upon successul verication, as many as
14 skids could be installed along the entire
Alliance pipeline.

Shepherds Flat will rely on 338 high-eciency
GE Energy 2.5-100 wind turbines. Representing
GEs most advanced wind turbine technology
in terms o eciency, reliability and grid
connection capabilities, the 2.5-100 is a
2.5-MW onshore wind turbine. It is designed

been proven in projects across Europe and
Asia. Currently, 500 o the 2.5-100 wind
turbines are operating in countries such as
Romania, France, Holland, Turkey, Germany,
Belgium, Spain, Italy, Poland, Japan and
China. Key components o the 2.5-100
will be manuactured at GEs acility in
Pensacola, Florida.
The rst phase o the Shepherds Flat wind
arm is scheduled to begin operation in 2012.
Construction o the project involves not only
the installation o wind turbines, but also the
development o 95 miles o roads and 167
miles o transmission lines. Shepherds Flat is
owned by developer and managing memberCaithness Energy, along with GE Energy
Financial Services, Google and subsidiaries
o ITOCHU and Sumitomo Corporation.
