Course Description

Strategies For Academic SuccessStudents will be taught how to have a successful college experience both academically and personally. The focus will be on the development of practical knowledge and skills to assist students toward that goal. Topics include time planning, test taking, study techniques, critical thinking, community resources, and managing the personal and relationship issues that face many students.

Students learn best when they are actively involved in the process. Research indicates that, regardless of the discipline or subject matter, students working in small groups tend to learn more and retain it longer than when other instructional methods are used. In addition, students who work in collaborative groups appear more satisfied with their classes.

Understanding Higher Education

•Students will be aware of the history and mission of the Community College, JCTC and KCTCS.

•Students will understand the differences between high school and higher education including roles and responsibilities, classroom behavior, codes of conduct, student rights the role of faculty, administration and staff, and expectations of faculty and others.

•Students will develop strategies for information management - use of internet, e-mail, word processing, World Wide Web research and the library for academic purposes.

•Students will be able to use academic and student support services as part of the college learning experience.

•Students will be aware of campus cultural and extra curricular activities.
