GDR2 – Creating, Formatting, and Downloading Presentations

Google Docs is a free Web-based office suite and data storage services that Google offers. The suite allows users to create and edit documents while collaborating in real-time with other users. Google Docs features a simple presentation program, spreadsheet, text editor, drawings, and forms.

Google Docs allow users to download files in Microsoft Office Suite formats and also upload Microsoft Office Suite formats into Google documents. I hope that this simple but amazing web-based tool will help you in your future academic work.

In April 24, 2012 Google release Google Drive which is a file and storage an extension of Google Docs.

In-Lab

Scenario: You are supposed to give a PowerPoint Presentation on the history of Timbuktu at some historical convention at Chicago. As you hand your USB thumb drive to the IT guy to run the presentation, the fellow blurts out “I hope it’s not in Microsoft PowerPoint! We don’t have it installed in this computer, but we have the Internet”. So, after taking this course you know of another option to deliver your message. You will create a simple presentation using Google Docs and download the presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint format.

In-Lab Instructions

Step 1: Uploading and Changing You Microsoft PowerPoint to Google Docs PresentationInstead of creating your presentation from scratch you need to upload your Timbuktu.ppt file to Google Drive and then convert it to Google Presentation.

To upload your PowerPoint (.ppt) file click on the upload button

Select Files and navigate to where you storage Timbuktu.ppt

Click on the Open button and on the right-hand of the web page you will see an upload progress bar.

Click on the My Drive button and you should see the file that you uploaded.

Now let’s convert the file to a Google Docs Presentation format.

Make sure that you check the Timbuktu.ppt file. A new file that

looks like this will open

Step 2: Formatting the Presentation

Click on to open the presentation

there should be 10 slides.

Change the presentation’s theme to Western

Right-click on the white area of your first slide and select Change theme…

Now select Western

Your presentation should look like this:

On Slide 1 do the following formatting specifications:

Click on the title Timbuktu and delete it

Insert a Word Art with the text Timbuktu

A small text field box will appear and type Timbuktu.

Hit enter when you are ready to go back to the slide.

Now drag the new title towards the upper left corner of the slide and move the image a bit to the left. Simply eye-ball it, you don’t have to be precise in this step. It should look like this example.

Now hold the Shift and select the image and the title to insert an Animation

Once you click on the Animation selection an Animation pane will appear on the right-hand of the application.

We will select Fade in and On Click

On Slide 2 do the following:

Insert a down arrow from Shapes to point to Timbuktu on the map.

Now simply drag to get the size of the arrow.

You don’t have to have the exact same size as the example, but you have to have it point to Timbuktu.

One Slide 2 add a textbox right below the map:

Type the following text inside the text box: Map of North Africa.

Now change the text alignment to Center:

Highlight the text and change the font color to Red:

Now change the font size to 24:

On slide 3 add Animation – Fly In in the following order:

Slide title

The left content

The image

Add Animation Fly in to all objects of slides 4, 5, and 6 (no particular order).

On slide 6 resize the image so that it does not block the text

Use the upper left or right corner of the image to increase or reduce the size of the image while maintaining the image’s aspect ratio. The middle handle-bars will distort the image. Move the image to the lower right-hand of the slide. See example below:

Go to slide 10 and insert a new slide with layout Title and Body:

On slide 11 add the following title:

Go to insert and Video:

It will take you to this YouTube search page. Enter Timbuktu on the search engine:

Select the following video from the list:

Once you select the correct image by clicking on it once, hit

Step 3: Sharing, Downloading the file into Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 (.PPTX) And Upload it

Share presentation to one other email address.

Go to File and Download as … Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx)

Once you hit the Microsoft PowerPoint Link it should automatically download the file to your Downloads. To access the Downloads folder go to the Windows Start button and type Downloads (see example below).

Then you can find your Timbuktu.ppt.pptx.

Out-Lab

Scenario: A good friend – Olivia Pandolfi asked you to come along for moral support to her presentation on the Egyptian Pyramids. A few minutes before her presentation the only computer that had Microsoft PowerPoint just crashed and the IT guy cannot fix the computer and so replaces it. Unfortunately the new computer does not have Microsoft Office installed in it. Since you have taken a recent lab covering Google Docs, you decided to step into action. Follow the instructions on the next page to complete her presentation.

Out-Lab Materials

1. Go to www.iclassbook.com and login with your username and password. Click on the In-Lab tab and under Out-Lab 3 you will find this document: ONR3-Out-lab3.pptx. Download the document to your Desktop

2. Access to the Internet3. Google account (you should already have one).

Out-Lab InstructionsStep 1:

1. Login to your Google account and navigate to Google Drive

2. Upload ONR3-Out-lab3.pptx to your Google Drive3. Convert ONR3-Out-lab3.pptx into a Google Presentation

file4. Open ONR3-Out-lab3.pptx in Google Presentation.

Step 2:5. Change the Theme to Khaki

6. Add Animations to all slide objects (use any animations types) from Slide 1 through Slide 7.

7. Slide 8 change the font color to White, so it looks like this:

8. On Slide 11 insert a video and use the keywords Egyptian Pyramids:
