GDP by State, 2010-2015

 

INTRODUCTION

Malaysia’s economy experienced a moderate growth of 5.0 per cent in 2015 as compared to 6.0 per cent in 2014. Services, Manufacturing and Mining & Quarrying sectors spearheaded Malaysia’s economic performance in 2015.

 

GDP CONTRIBUTION BY STATE, 2015

Six states remained as the largest GDP contributor in 2015. Selangor contributed the most with 22.6 per cent followed  by WP KL  (15.1 per cent), Sarawak (10.0 per cent), Johor (9.3 per cent), Sabah (6.6 per cent) and Pulau Pinang (6.6 per cent). These states accounted for 70.2 per cent to the national economy as in Chart 1.

 

ECONOMIC GROWTH BY STATE, 2015

Nine states grew at a faster pace than the national growth (5.0 per cent) in 2015 led by WP Labuan (6.9 per cent) followed by Sabah (6.1 per cent), Perak (5.9 per cent), Selangor (5.7 per cent), Johor (5.6 per cent), Kedah (5.6 per cent), Pulau Pinang (5.5 per cent), Melaka (5.5 per cent) and WP KL (5.3 per cent). However, six states namely Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Sarawak, Kelantan, Terengganu and Perlis posted a growth below the national level (Chart 1).

 

ECONOMIC STRUCTURE BY STATE, 2015

The different composition of economic activities has brought the distinctive characteristic in each state. The dominance of Services sector can be seen in WP KL (88.0 per cent), WP Labuan (75.5 per cent), Kelantan (66.3 per cent), Perlis (63.7 per cent) and Perak (60.0 per cent) as in Chart 2. Meanwhile, Manufacturing and Services sector were strongly contributed to the economy of Johor, Kedah, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Pulau Pinang, Selangor and Terengganu. On the other hand, Agriculture sector holds a substantial share in Sabah, Pahang, Kelantan and Sarawak.

PERFORMANCE BY SECTOR, 2015

Services sector in Malaysia was dominated by Selangor and WP KL with a combined share of 49.9 per cent (Chart 3). Wholesale

& Retail Trade activities were the key player to all states, except for Perak and Terengganu (Utilities) and WP Labuan (Financial activities).

 

Selangor was the largest contributor in the Manufacturing sector with a share of 28.9 per cent followed by Pulau Pinang and Johor with 12.8 per cent and 12.4 per cent respectively (Chart 4). The Manufacturing sector in Malaysia grew by 4.9 per cent, backed by Electrical & Electronic sub sector in Selangor, Pulau Pinang and Johor as well as the upbeat performance in Chemicals and Chemical Products recorded in Terengganu, Selangor and Pahang. Meanwhile, Motor Vehicles and Transport Equipment in Melaka, Selangor and Johor further strengthened the overall Manufacturing sector in Malaysia.         

 

Sabah, Sarawak, Johor, Pahang and Perak remained as top contributors for Agriculture sector with a total share of 71.6 per cent (Chart 5). Oil Palm  sub sector in Sarawak, Perak and Negeri Sembilan were the main catalyst for national Agriculture growth. In addition, a rebound in Rubber sub sector mainly in Negeri Sembilan, Kedah and Perak has supported the Agriculture sector.

 

WP KL and Selangor accounted for 56.2 per cent of the Construction sector in Malaysia (Table 1). The performance of this sector was due to Non-Residential Buildings and Civil  Engineering activities.

GDP PER CAPITA, 2015

GDP Per Capita at national level rose from RM36,031 to RM37,104 in 2015 (Table 2). Six states which exceeded this level were WP KL being the top of the list with RM94,722 followed by WP Labuan (RM58,577), Pulau Pinang (RM44,847), Sarawak (RM44,012), Selangor (RM42,611) and Melaka (RM39,853).
